I just received the following ad from Prestige:

Quote:
Queensland Numeral Cancels

Queensland Numeral Cancels by Bernie Manning, wire spiral-bound, 250pp with a large fold-out facsimile of a 1906 railways map, published by the author (2009), $154 (incl GST) - plus postage & handling.

This brand new book is a vast improvement on the coverage provided by Hugh Campbell in his "Postal History of Queensland". Bernie Manning has worked with a number of other enthusiasts to access as much material as possible to, in turn, ensure that both his coverage and his rarity ratings are as accurate and reliable as possible.

The book is extensively illustrated entirely in colour, using the best available strikes of the postmarks. This will greatly assist collectors to identify any questionable markings. Use of colour also means that you would have to pay $250+ to copy the book!!

Inclusion of the railways map is a valuable bonus. It will assist students to locate the numerous tiny settlements scattered throughout the second-largest of the Australian Colonies/States.Exceptional value and a must for every dealer, postal historian, and postmark collector.

Price $154 - plus postage & handling.

I'm trying to decide whether to buy it. Between Campbell's book and Marius's website, I feel like I have a lot of info on these. And Qld numerals aren't exactly central to what I collect. But I like to collect books on Australian philately, so am tempted by this. The price is a tad steep! And why would a book on postmarks have to be in colour? That drives the cost up for no obvious reason.

Has anyone seen the book? How much more info does it have than Campbell?

Greg

It is a very colourful and good looking publication.

I am a bit biased since several illustrations in the book are from my collection.

Does he discuss the two line registered cancels? (I know they're not numerals... :) )

From Marius's pages and some of what Jeremy was posting a while back, the
list in Campbell was missing a number of these.

Strictly numeral cancels. He does get into the discussion about the 10 bar railway numerals and the square railway numerals. In the front of the book he states that this is the first of a series on various Queensland postal history topics. So maybe the 2 line Registered are in there someplace.

I finally got around to ordering a copy of this today, but in the meantime has anyone
got any comments on it?

Greg asked about the book being in colour. I've got a feeling that some of the colour
combinations won't copy well in black and white, I'll give it a try when I get it.
Even if it makes the book more expensive, if it makes it a lot easier to identify
cancels in the book then I think we'll all be glad it was done this way. And remember
a few rare cancels that people haven't identified before could cover most of the cost
of the book!

I've had my copy for over a week now and have found it to be essential for my collecting of Qld numeral cancels.

The fact that it now gives ratings for three different issues, chalons, sidefaces and commonwealth, adds new interest to collecting. A number e.g. '93' which was previously rated Scarce 'S', now has 3 ratings: RRR for chalon, C for sideface and RRRRR for Commonwealth.

Where reallocation of a number has taken place e.g. '186' from Lutwyche to Lakes Creek, the rating for sideface issues goes from RRRRR to R. The opening and closing dates of offices is given helping to select the most likely issues for each when a tie is not obtained.

The rating scale now consists of 8 levels from common 'C' to Number Not Seen 'NNS', with RRRRR being the rarest where numbers have been sighted.

A table of Railway cancels has also been included which has helped me to identify a few previously mystery cancels.

Where possible colour images of stamps with numeral cancels have been included. These are probably a fraction smaller than the real items but are of a high quality. A first glance you could almost mistake them for real stamps. They are actually that good.

Being able to see images of the actual cancels make identification of your own numeral cancels much easier.

I certainly have not regretted my purchase although it means I will have to completely rearrange my collection to follow the new ratings.

I agree Ron, it is a great publication but I too will have to completely rearrange my collection. Will be worth it in the long run. I am really looking forward to the registered handstamps publication. If any of you are in touch with Bernie can you let him know that I am more than happy for him to look at / include any of mine if it helps with his research or with the illustrations

Just out of curiosity, as this isn't my area, can someone post the link to the "Marius" website?

Yes, sold about 5 copies to clients who pre-ordered it. Anyone else please let me know - ozstamps[at]gmail.com

My price is lower than Prestige at $A150 plus shipping.

Finding just ONE half decent cancel will pay for it readily! An essential tome for all libraries in this part of the world.

How does this book compare (in terms of level of detail and illustrations) to the one on Victoria cancels that came out a few months back?

The Numeral Cancellations of Victoria by Freeman & White

A wonderful book that I bought from Glen - last December I believe - in the Stampboards "Sell" forum. It may still be available.

OK. It's been around for longer than a few months. I thought I might have missed one. (Yes, it is a terrific book.)

"Victoria" In Bars next to a 3 barred sided 7 is pretty hard to confuse anyone, is possibly the thought that crossed Hugh's mind. ;)

Finally got around to listing these books up for sale -

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=13912

So great to see ratings being used on 3 eras of stamps.

Who'd have imagined a "93" on a 1d Roo was rated RRRRR. Or a "713" - same story.

No idea what a "RRRRR" Roo would sell for, but my guess is finding either would pay for the cost of this book!
