Based on Ian McMahon's Monograph for the Philatelic Society of Canberra, 1991, and my own holdings, I have compiled a list of private users of the 3d, 3 1/2d and 4d embossings (large and small dies) for Australian stationery envelopes, - one illustrated below, 3d large die:



Can anyone add to the list below, or identify those users where only a PO box is given as identifying the private user?

Where dates are given, I have those examples. Where no date is given, the entry is from Ian McMahon's llistings. It's a long list, lets make it more complete.

Another example, the 4d plum large die. The user is Robert Bosch Pty Ltd and the cds is Carlton Vic 23 October 1957.

Apart from having access to the records of contracts and knowledge of PO issues, I've often wondered how one separates a privately-ordered PSE (ie stamped-to-order) and a PO issue overprinted for private use.

Yes norvic. I would like someone with more knowledge to tell us how to pick PTPO (printed to private order) from over the counter Post Office issue which a company has overprinted themselves with their return address details.

Of course the window envelopes are clearly PTPO, and some of the stamp imprint dies within a useage period I believe were only for concessional rates.

Then, of course, there are also the official /OHMS envelopes.

Alas this delicious earlier PTPO issue is no longer in my hands.

Not in all countries - the USPS still has them, and I believe Royal Mail also. Not inconceivable that Australia PO also sold PS window envelopes. I think registered envelopes and those for foreign rates are usually PTPO/STO.

Yes Novic, in other countries. Don't know of any Australian P O predecimal imprint envelopes that were window, apart from OHMS . And I guess OHMS were strictly speaking PTPO as I suppose Treasury etc paid for them to be produced.
More recent no value indicated decimal issues are available as window envelopes.

An example of the official window type envelope used by the Australian Taxation office. Date is 29 June 1955, so it was unlikely to have held a refund cheque for the current year.

An example for Onkaparinga woollen goods from 1954. The slogan cancellation suggests we use Australian products. Not sure if this company still exists or if we produce much woollen goods now at all.

A front only from 1959, for James Hardie. Tells us to use asbestos. We know better now. The slogan cancellation suggests we use more wool, probably a better means of insulation!!

Nice cover. They seem to have been a big user of printed to private order stationery envelopes over decades. They had stationery printed to order for offices in several states and in New Zealand.

Vacuum oil did use perfins in Australia and in New Zealand also. There may be other countries where they had perfins in addition to printed to private order stationery.

I was going through some 'stuff' tonight and came across this. Earlier than those you mention. But worth a look.

I remember seeing some in a box lot I bought at Phoenix. They are in Melbourne. I'll have to dig them up.

Thank you. Nice covers. The Bosch is a variation of earlier, but the Bush Hospital would be scarce. How many would a bush hospital have used? Not many I would suggest!

Enough use to have bothered to get them printed.

For the 1 1/2d red Octagonal with postage in the die, used by Vacuum Oil, I have the following: Vacuum Oil Sydney window covers used 6 Aug 1924, 22 Nov 1927, and non window cover Vacuum Oil Sydney used 24 March 1928.

I think Vacuum Oil was such a prolific user of stationery you could collect that company only and have a comprehensive collection.

Their stationery was separately printed for state offices and also for New Zealand.

The earliest date in Menuz for PE34 (H&G KB 16) is 27 May 1924,
and the lastest is 6 Dec 1928.
There are two types of envelope
"white wove with inside blue solid overlay, or white or cream laid"
No i don't collect Vacuum Oil Co. exclusively it's just they are the only
two i've got at the moment.
But i do collect general stationery.

Does anybody know if the company supplyed the envelopes for overprinting
or was it the Post Office

My understanding is that the companies supplied the stock for the post office to print the required rate for postage.

Are there instances where the post offcie supplied the complete statitonery?
Someone will know.

PS I am interested in seeing your scans, but beware if using photobucket, have your account set to private as someone has taken two of my scans and used them in a Stamp News article this month without my permission!!

This is a Die 1 or PE51A as it has the "inverted t" on the crown in the orb under the cross.
Die 2 is less detailed.

After seeing all the preceding scans think I just might begin collecting these things. Sure like the artwork/designs. Adds alot to the appearance of a cover. Beats my NWPI military covers with cancels and censor handstamps.
