I've got a biscuit tin full still on piece, can you imagine what the postmistress would say, or want to say, if I asked her to CTO hundreds of stamps  ? I wonder if she would lend me her stamp?

Do what I do, they are all using self inking ones now-a-days so just pinch one off the counter when they go to get your registered mail. And bring it back the next time you pick up mail.
(This post is typed with tongue firmly planted in cheek!)

If my local post office reads this they'll never let me BEHIND the counter again! :o
I wonder if this ink washs off the back of you hand? Either that or I can send myself to Botswana now.

I hope they check your inky hands next time you are in your local PO

I could nick the corners with a self inking stamp I suppose but, I will not ever have these in my collection as most are these are self adhesive stamps, not many are lick&stick. So why do I collect them then? I can't help myself

Any time I get an envelope out of my PO box that hasn't been stamped, I go in and ask, and I've never been refused. After all, you could remind them that they have to ensure that stamps are cancelled and can't be re-used!

Very nice billdootson and it was a registered cover too

I don't get the mail but if I did I wouldn't mind going in to the PO to ask as they are received but not a mountain of them.

I'm thankful to get them and have trained the non philatelic I work with how to cut the stamps off the covers. I haven't got the heart to tell my boss who thought he was doing a good thing in retrieving the high value stamps off a huge parcel that he received from India that you have to leave the perforations on the stamp

Some gutters do look nice, but personally I'm not that keen on the one above. It looks somewhat boring. Now below is what I call a nice looking gutter:

Here's my nice cover I recently got from UK. Stamps from as early as 1973 were used, that's why they were all pen-cancelled :)

Nice registered, priority padded envelope arrived today from Austria. Franked with one of those genuinely woven edelweiss stamps and an Egon Schiele mini-sheet.

I think the woven stamp will be quite scarce on genuinely travelled covers in the longer run.

I think so too and it's really nice to see some texture incorporated into a cover.

Spectacular !

I remember that UPU has regulations on postmarking, other than those chopped on stamps, only one is allowed on blank space.

Oh well, do first day pictorial postmarks count? Any thoughts?

Well, philatelic production or not, I'm certainly not a fan of all those meaningless strikes away from the stamps.

That's one of the nicest covers I've ever seen! :D
As for my thoughts on the postmarks, I'm not sure myself. Either it's because it's the First day of issue, as you said, or the postman was old, forgetful, cross-eyed and not wearing his glasses.

They used to really annoy me, but I've come to accept them as a modern reality. Perhaps in 50 years time people will actively seek out spray-cancelled stamps ;-)

More packets than parcels.

From USA, I don't know anything about these stamps but like the stamp that has 'Design originally prepared but not used for U.S. postage series of 1869' on it. I'm suprised at the cancel though, it has bars.

Image

These are from Estonia and were received at Christmas time. When I searched I couldn't find them in 2009 year sets, so went through LOTS of years before finding them in about 1995 I think they were. They weren't sent as philatelic, just from the PO on a packet. I would love to find stamps at the PO from years ago.

Whilst searching the year set, I was surprised at the beautiful stamps that Estonia produce, a much overlooked country in my opinion. These aren't anything to write home about and it's a shame they took the selvedge from the miniature sheet :?

Not actually a parcel, but here's one that from an envelope I received just this morning, from Adelaide, with a nice cachet (is that what it's called?) :D I don't get cancels like this every day.

Having taken the advice and purchased some more reference books, they arrived last Firday from some member in Castlecrag.

There were 4 complete chinese new year sheets tied to the parcel cover.

They look most striking! :D :D :D

Its not ummm... nice, but another example of the "whatever" attitude of Australia Post and Customs.

This package arrived today from a friend in South Africa.

I guess the x-ray threw customs off as they opened it up for a look-see. No problem just some special cut hingless mounts.

Anyway its what they did next:

First they resealed the envelope with clear sticky tape - ruining the 2 stamps on the right.
Second the Sydney Parcel Centre thoughtfully put their parcel label over the next 2 stamps.
I'm just glad the red texta mad boffin didn't decide to sign his autograph over the last 3 stamps!
No less than 3 cusotms texta confirmations of inspection?

You know sometimes you just want to.....well its after midnight so I think I will... go outside and howl at the moon!!!
I used to think I was a warewolf but I'm alright na-oooohhh!

Actually I think you were lucky...the stamps on far right that got sticky-taped are only a 30ct and a standard letter rate...OK the label was stupidly plastered on top of the stamps, but "I'm in a rush I don't have time to carefully place the label" (yeah right a civil servant in a rush  )...but the 3 stamps that survived are the best of the lot, 3 x 10 rands...

You would not believe how many auction catalogues I get from stamp auctioneers, where they use a nice high-value single and a few low-rates to make up the total...and what do they do, stick the high value (ie. $8-$14 US Express stamps) right up in the corner where they get crumpled to h**l, while the worthless 8 cent commems are sheltered well in the middle of the envelope
