I bought these, and I'd like to share them.

This first one, I bevieve, is a Soviet 3 ruble payment certificate from 1938. There are signatures on the back, would that be the fellow's comrades, etc?

This next one is from the USA. What year would it be from?

These British "Special Vouchers" have a fascinating history.

They used to be very rare, found in so-so condition, and
seldom offered; two varieties had never been released.

Then in mid-1987, someone found 17 million of them in a
Ministry of Defence warehouse in Gloucestershire, in crisp
original bundles, all pristine mint, 15 tons of them!

They sold to a consortium led by CoinCraft, Inc., February 14,
1991, for a higher-than-expected £240,350 or roughly U.S.
2.5 cents per note (at that time).

Since then, the hoard has been dispersed, and the notes
have been utilized for endless promotions, specials, and
freebies. They are of very modest value, despite eBay
Sellers' claims to the contrary.

Doug wrote about the 'Special Vouchers' you have Frank but what about the others that look mint? When I saw them I was surprised at the beautiful condition of them.

Do they still give these out to the military now and if not when did they end? I know Doug will know this...he knows everything

There were 7 varieties sold; all the crisp mint British notes
shown in this thread were part of the hoard.

I don't know if the U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan use
MPCs or not?

Actually, they all say "Special Voucher" -- remember you
are seeing both sides of the notes, but "Voucher" only
appears on one side, I think.

Clearly there are big gaps in my knowledge, but I did clip
a lot of useful articles over the years.

The key article, the biggie, the chief bull-goose loony, the
mother lode, so to speak, titled "What do women want?" --
I can't find it. Looked everywhere. Miss-filed?

Ol' eagle eye! I didn't see that they all said that except for the USA ones they don't have that on them.

Military Payment Certificates, or MPC, were used from the end of World War II until the end of the Vietnam War, between the years 1946 and 1973. Fifteen series of MPC's were created but only 13 series were issued.

After the Vietnam War MPC was never again issued, 1990 it was replaced by a Stored Value Card system, presently used by U.S. armed forces in Iraq.

pfft! You lost the most important article Doug....'What women want'....now you will never know unless I do a search for you

These are two different animals. The "shilling" note is
Japanese Invasion Money (JIM) for Oceania; it was not for
troops to use in their own military facilities, it was to be
imposed (via forced exchange) upon the civilian populations
of conquered lands, such as the Philippines.

The initial letters are B for Burma, M for Malaya, O for
Oceania, P for Philippines, and S for Sumatra (Netherlands
East Indies). In order, these notes were denominated in
rupees, dollars, pounds, pesos, and guilders. A good many
collectors believe that the "dollar" notes were intended as
invasion money for the United States, but it's Malaya.

U.S. troops brought back TONS of JIM after the War, and
the lower denominations are virtually worthless, especially
after the physical ravages of the tropics.

The second note (above) is the standard Japanese 50 sen
note used by residents of Japan (Pick Catalog #58).

I had never seen the word "hydatogram" before, and in all the billions of pages of Google, it does not appear. And yet I don't think you meant "hologram" (this isn't one, as far as I can tell). What is the origin of this word? Is it commonly used by paper money collectors?

A lot of the notes further down the page are darned ragged...they look, appropriately enough, like they've been through a war. :o

Sorry guys, I mixed Greek with English. Hydatogram or Hydatoseme is in Gr. and "watermark" the exact translation.
From now on the word will appear in Google, a rememberance of my guff. :D
