OK, Glen said it was Ok to advertise so I'll do it.

The ultimate catalog dealing with volcanic features on stamps.

I'm not talking volcanoes on stamps, like the first two editions of Bertha Joachimsons American Topical Association Catalog.

I'm talking everything volcanic on stamps.

All reviews have been outstanding.

This has taken 30 years worth of work.

If you buy it, I will gain about $1 per year for the effort put into it.

I'm not sure how to link it, but will try this:

A very nice looking product and especially so the eBay presentation.

Here is the SECOND CD you can prepare; it will take a lot less time, and lots of people may buy it. Based on what you've learned in preparing the Volcano, write a lengthy guide (on CD) for collectors, explaining in excruciating detail how to put their own labors of love onto CD and market them, with many examples and excerpts from various CDs and tricks and tips, etc., etc., etc.

As you know, I have quite a file of highly-specialized URLs I've found, including many of collectibles, and other subjects too. Some websites (particularly those on GeoCities) clearly encapsulate YEARS worth of effort and attention to detail. If you could show these folks how to go from website to CD, they would surely buy the CD I've suggested to you.

Doug

An interesting idea, but one I will have to put on hold for at least the rest of this year since I am trying to complete a history of volcanology. Another project that has been years in the making but I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The volcano catalog actually started life as a term project for one of my late Professors (Tim Mutch) back in 1977. Finding nothing was known about the volcanoes in mainland Asia, I set about a literature review (in many different languages) of the same. Publishing it as a GSA Special Paper.

After getting "back into" stamps in 1990, I decided to take a busman's holiday and collect volcano stamps. All that was available at that time was Bertha's ATA publication. Very good it is, but she was a stamp collector rather than a volcanologist.

So after getting hooked, I decided it was time to redo the catalog, especially since Bertha had died after completion of the second edition and decided to enlarge it to include all things volcanic, rather than just volcanoes.

So, half the problem is knowing what is volcanic. Scott doesn't help matters by not printing images of individual stamps. Michel is better, but German is not one of my best languages.

Googling the internet for castles on the Rhine built on rock prominences takes a large amount of time. Even worse when it is countries with which you are unfamiliar. But I have friends. Many of whom, and one in particular, who have helped out with both east European stamps and geology.

Many thanks for the suggestion, I may take you up on it in the near future.

I wonder if any of the geoscientific satellites have conducted searches for unknown volcanoes, for instance by detecting emission of sulfur dioxide or other signature plumes, etc.

Those results might be published, as the info does not seem particularly secret or strategic.

This week, our "History Channel" network has been broadcasting a show called "The Year Without a Summer" (1816) caused by the eruption of Mt. Tambora in April 1815.

There aren't many unknown volcanoes anymore.
New ones pop up, like Home Reef, last year, but most of the known volcanoes are pretty much covered.
The major area of the Earth where information is hard to come by is the Southern hemisphere, primarily because of nearly constant cloud clover. However, as you state, non-imaging satellites are proving useful in this field.

During any one week there are generally ten to fifteen volcanoes active worldwide (that is, above sea-level).

This week we have Fourpeaked, USA; Karymsky, Russia; Masaya, Nicaragua; Rabaul, Papua New Guinea; Reventador, Ecuador; Sakura-jima, Japan; Shiveluch, Russia; Soufrière Hills, Montserrat; St. Helens, USA; Tungurahua, Ecuador; Ubinas, Perú and newly activated (again) Kilauea and Kliuchevskoi, Russia.

What a poetic list!

Does your CD include any of the many non-earth volcanos now known to be on the moon, Mars, and especially your namesake, Io, one of Jupiter's moons? If so, then the CD would appeal to space collectors too...

The infamous "Face on Mars" stamp of Sierra Leone comes to mind, surely some of the features portrayed must be volcanos.

Thanks,
I couldn't figure out how to do the short links.

Yep as the next image shows, there are some extraterrestrial volcanics.

Except I didn't include all the images of astronauts bouncing around on the Moon.
Almost all of those (at least Apollo's 11,12,15 and 17) plus a few Lunokhods and Surveyors would count as being volcanic.

I have seen a doco. on the major Mt. St. Helens eruption a few years back. The film footage, and some of the stories to come out of it were jaw dropping.

Amazing stuff.

Io, do you have anything on the underwater volcanoes?

So I stole the next image from the WADP site.

Oldonyo Lengai mountain in Tanzania has finally erupted. This brings to an end the numerous earth tremors that have hit East Africa for the past week. The seismic waves responsible for the movements emanated from this point. The powerful eruptions that occurred on Thursday from 10pm will, according to experts, reduce the underground activity that was responsible for the tremors. It will also restore calm in the region that had for the last one week been engulfed in fear and anxiety. Three
days ago, some Nairobi residents spent the night in the cold as they awaited a major eruption that never occurred. So intense were the fears, that it took Internal Security minister, Mr John Michuki's efforts to calm the restless nation. But on Thursday, thousands of Maasai herdsmen living around the area vacated their homes in the wake of a trail of the eruptions, that left two children injured and a school damaged.

Media reports in Tanzania indicated that the molten lava spewing from the crater scalded two school children. The activity also damaged a 300-capacity Meigoi Primary school around the area. But no deaths were reported. Experts said people in the area that experienced the tremors can now smile and thank God for the eruption as the tremors are for gone now. Dr Eliud Mathu, head of Geology Department at the University of Nairobi, noted that the lava emanating from the mountain was not very hot. He added that the gases are not poisonous enough to affect residents. "It is a sigh of relief and we can now thank God that all is well," Mathu told the Saturday Standard by telephone. Mathu said the lava, which recorded heat of 510 degrees centigrade is 'relatively cool' compared to the hottest, which is normally 1,100 degrees centigrade.

According to reports in the "Guardian" of Tanzania, more than 1,500 people, most of them Maasai families, vacated their homes in Ngaresero, Orbalal and Nayobi villages following the tremors that triggered the volcanic eruption.

Villagers are reported to have heard roaring on the rugged geographic feature they call 'Mountain of God' before the volcano started discharging ash and lava. Tanzanian authorities have since warned tourists to keep off the area for security reasons. Mathu concurred, saying the area should be avoided until after two weeks when the lava will have cooled. The mountain is the world's only active volcano that emits natrocarbonatite lava, which Mathu said has got no capability to flow further than about two kilometers from the mountain. This kind of lava, which almost contains no silicon, is also much cooler in temperature compared to other emissions, he said.

Mount Oldonyo Lengai is 3,450 metres above sea level and is located south of Lake Natron on the Tanzania-Kenya border. According to an official at the Kenya Meteorological Department, Mr Samuel Mwangi, the eruptions normally throw volcanic ash into the environment, which causes pollution. "The
pollution changes the characteristics of the atmosphere making the air very dirty," said Mwangi.)

It seems that the eruption of Oldonyo Lengai was somewhat overembellished, probably a landslide.

Details later.

Interesting info!

I know that Indonesia is unstable but when you look at those stats none of their volcanoes seem to appear twice and definately not consistently like say Rabaul.

Do new activity or hotspots in Indonesia always go quiet in a week or two and not go on the continued activity list or am I missing something.?

Is yesterdays Indonesian Earthquake related to any of this activity?

More probably that I missed a week.

Yep, volcanoes and earthquakes are due to subduction of the Indian-Australian plate under Indonesia.

Hi IOMoon,

Can you please answer a question I have?

When there is increased activity in one area say Indonesia or along the plate line you mentioned, is there a diminishing of activity in other areas of the world or is there no pattern to the activity?

Thanks in anticipation.
Bill.

Bill, that is a very difficult question to answer.

Largely because continuous monitoring of volcanic activity really only dates from the initiation of the Smithsonian SEAN (Scientific Early Alert Network).

Even now, it relies on people being in the right place at the right time and having instant communications.

Places like Heard and McDonald Islands are almost continuously obscured from spacecraft imagery by clouds and rely on shipborn observations. Many African eruptions have no written record, although they appear to be fairly recent.

Having said that, the two main sources of subaerial volcanic activity appear to be subduction zones and hotspots, though the recent activity in East Africa and the Gulf of Suez suggest a major upheaval in that area which is a spreading ridge rather than a subduction zone.

Geology doesn't usually work in human lifespans.
An increase in 1cm per year for the rate of movement of the Australian plate northward may not now do anything for volcanism in Indonesia for a thousand or even a million years.

We just haven't been around long enough to measure the effects.

Bill, I think there is a simpler answer to your precise question, and that is "no," increases in one area do not automatically cause reductions in other areas, provided they are not physically adjacent.

I mean to imply that an increase in Indonesia would not mean a reduction in Iceland or Mexico. There is always an immense amount of energy (hot magma) far underground, all over the world, and in general, it has been there since the earth was formed; we see only a tiny fraction find its way above ground and/or above the seabed, most commonly at subduction zones (California) or weak spots (hotspots) in the mantle (Hawaii).

This erupted in 1991 and the Philippine Govt issued special mandatory tax stamps for use from late 1992 to Feb 1993 to fund the relief programme. I'm researching these stamps and would welcome any information about them.

I have a number of covers but would like more.

24 pages of Mt Pinatubo stamps and covers that were part of the Garrett collection were auctioned by Philstamps in Sept 2006. If possible, I would like to contact the buyer to obtain more info.

Davo,

I have no idea who bought them, but for those who don't know what they look like, here is an image.

Glen,

Interesting. Ian Gass, whom I worked for indirectly, was the leader of the Royal Society expedition which went to investigate the eruption.

More interesting are the Tristan overprints for volcano relief printed by St. Helena, with just 434 sets being sold.

Thanks iomoom for the scan of the 6x1p stamps. Can you determine what the postmark date is and are these stamps on a cover or piece? As the tax was only 25c per domestic item and 1P for international, these were probably used for general postage after the tax period

I have a FDC that shows the 4x1p se-tennent stamps and the 25c single stamp cancelled with a volcanic pictorial postmark.
I'm not sure how to put a scan on here but will try.

Davo,

it is a cover dated either October 6th or October 8th 1993.

It looks to be commercial mail rather than philatelic (which is why I bought it).

Iomoons cover is a commercial cover with the tax stamps being used for normal postage purposes. The stamps were mandatory for tax purposes from 16th Nov 1992 to 1st Feb 1993, then withdrawn, then re-issued for normal postage from 14th June 1993.

The tax rate was 25c for domestic and 1 Peso for international.

Hi Io
I have just found my first VOLCANO stamp among some UN on paper that I was sorting through.
Guess who is going to be the highest bidder for your cd at our Vinnies auction on Wednesday? :P

this is quite amazing, i never knew there was so much volcanic activity. In RSA the closest i ever get to a volcano is if someone has a bad curry.
