Centennial cachet fdc with nice machine cancel.

Centennial cachets are a raised print known as Thermography Embossing or Verco Print. It was originally created to simulate engraving at a lesser cost. The process is done with a "thermo" unit attached to the end of an offset printing press, freshly printed inks are dusted with a clear powder compound. Excess powder on non-printing areas is removed by vacuum, the sheet passes under a heater at temperatures of 480 - 700 degrees celsius, which fuses the ink and powder compound together. The printing then raises to simulate the look of embossed engraving, the sheet passes immediately into a cooling section where raising action stops.

From JFK to LBJ!
Image
Artcraft cachet with nice "Inauguration Day" machine slogan cancel.

Lyndon Johnson (LBJ) succeeded to the Presidency following the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, completed Kennedy's term & was elected President in his own right, winning by a large margin in the 1964 election. His campaign slogan was "All the way with LBJ". He escalated U S involvement in the Vietnam War, from 16,000 U S soldiers in 1963 to 550,000 combat troops in 1968. The involvement stimulated a large angry antiwar movement. He was the first sitting U S President to visit Australia, in 1966, where in Melbourne, Johnson's limousine was splashed with red & green paint. In Sydney, 10,000 demonstrated at Hyde Park corner as his motorcade came into the city from the airport. So perhaps his slogan should have been "Some of the way with LBJ". I am sure my neighbour at the time chanted something else!

Washington DC & Moon Landing First Day of Issue
Image
Artopages cachet fdc, with dual cancel, one "Moon Landing USA July 20, 1969" & the other "Washington DC September 9, 1969", the date of issue of the Moon Landing stamp. The cachet explains the relevance of the JFK stamp added to the cover.

Note on this cover the two date stamps are vertical to each other & I believe this to be a machine cancel.

Unknown cachet fdc, although I suspect the cachetmaker to be "The JFK Philatelic Society" who were prolific with their "1st Cachets" for this issue. The design is for "Kennedy's Cabinet", but it is not clear if this was at the start of his presidency, at the time of his death or during his time as president. In my time of collecting these I have not seen this cachet before & indeed it is not listed in "Mellone's Specialized Cachet Catalog of FDCs". One must presume that other covers were done for the rest of his cabinet.

Stewart Lee Udall (January 31, 1920 – March 20, 2010) was an American politician & later, a federal government official. After serving three terms as a congressman from Arizona, he served as Secretary of the Interior from 1961 to 1969, under presidents John F. Kennedy & Lyndon B. Johnson.

Washington DC Inauguration Day Richard M Nixon:
Image
Artcraft cachet with nice "Inauguration Day" machine slogan cancel.

Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 – April 22, 1994) was the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974, when he became the only President to resign the office. Nixon had previously served as a Republican U.S. representative & senator from California & as the 36th Vice President of the United States from 1953 to 1961.

Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California. He graduated & practiced law in Calfornia but moved to Washington to work for the federal government in 1942 & served in the U S Navy during W W II. Nixon was elected in California to the House of Representatives in 1946 and to the Senate in 1950. He in 1960, narrowly lost a presidential campaign to John F. Kennedy, and lost a race for Governor of California in 1962. In 1968, he ran again for the presidency & was elected & re-elected by a landslide in 1972. Nixon's second term saw the Watergate scandal and other misconduct, costing much of his political support, and in 1974, he resigned in the face of almost certain impeachment and removal from office, but received a pardon from his successor, Gerald Ford. He died on April 22, 1994, at the age of 81.

Artmaster's cachet began in 1946. The company was founded by Bob & Mary Schmidt at home (dare I say "in the Schmidt house") & still owned by the family. They are printed by offset usually in one or two colours. Usually on the reverse there is a short biography or description of the stamp subject. Early covers were only in one colour. There is no description on the back of the JFK cover.

Robert F Kennedy, 11th Anniversary of His Death:
Image
Artcraft cachet fdc (JFK stamp added) with nice Washington DC machine first day of issue cancel.

Robert Francis "Bobby" Kennedy (November 20, 1925 – June 6, 1968), also referred to by his initials RFK, was a U S politician, a Democratic senator from New York, & a younger brother of President John F. Kennedy, serving as JFK's chief advisor during his presidency. From 1961 to 1964 he served as the U.S. Attorney General. In March 1968 Kennedy began a campaign for the presidency and was a front-running candidate of the Democratic Party. In the California presidential primary, on June 4, Kennedy defeated Eugene McCarthy. That night Kennedy was shot by Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian Arab. Mortally wounded, he died early in the morning of June 6.

JFK or RFK :?:
Image
Wesley Cover Service (WCS) of Sydney Australia tried to create a cover for the 44th Anniversary of the Death of RFK, being nicely hand cancelled with Melbourne's "Shrine of Remembrance" pictorial postmark, from the St.Kilda Road Post Office.

Unfortunately then it all went wrong. JFK's photo was used as a cachet, JFK's photo was used on the "P" stamp affixed even though it said it was "RFK", & the cachet saying "Anniversary of JFK's death.
Image
Michael Hudson, who owns WCS these days, was so confused he thought he was doing a JFK cover rather than a RFK cover. Just priceless how two of the icons of the 20th Century can be confused in this way.

Flying Tiger wrote:That is an interesting collection. Do you have anything postmarked Cape Kennedy, Florida?
Flying Tiger

Cape Canaveral/Cape Kennedy is next.

The city of Cape Canaveral is located at the southern tip of a barrier island on the Atlantic coast of Florida. It is due south of the geographical feature Cape Canaveral (known as Cape Kennedy from 1963 to 1973) & separated from the mainland by the Banana River, Merritt Island and the Indian River from east to west.

Cape Canaveral, is a headland in Brevard County, Florida, near the centre of the state's Atlantic coast. Known as Cape Kennedy from 1963 to 1973, it lies east of Merritt Island, separated from it by the Banana River.

It is part of a region known as the Space Coast, and is the site of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Since many U.S. spacecraft are launched from both the station & the Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, the terms "Cape Canaveral," "Canaveral", or "the Cape" have become metonyms that refer to both as the launch site of spacecraft.

A post office in the area was built and listed in the US Post Office application as Artesia & retained this name from 1893–1954; & then became Port Canaveral from 1954-1962; & lastly the City of Cape Canaveral from 1962 to 1963 when a larger post office was built. But it appears the post office did not change it's name!

From 1963 to 1973 the area had a different name as US President Lyndon Johnson renamed the area "Cape Kennedy." President John F. Kennedy who set the goal of landing on the moon. After his assassination in 1963, his widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, suggested to President Lyndon Johnson that renaming the Cape Canaveral facility would be an appropriate memorial. Johnson recommended the renaming of the entire cape, announced in a televised address six days after the assassination. Accordingly, Cape Canaveral was officially renamed Cape Kennedy.

Although the name change was approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names of the Interior Department in December 1963, it was not popular in Florida, especially in the neighboring city of Cape Canaveral. In 1973, the Florida Legislature passed a law restoring the former 400-year-old name, & the Board went along. The name restoration to Cape Canaveral became official on October 9, 1973. The Kennedy family issued a letter stating they "understood the decision". NASA's Kennedy Space Center retains the "Kennedy" name.

So I believe the postmarks of Cape Canaveral are from the City of Cape Canaveral, not the Space Center of the same name. Was there a post office at the Space Center called "Cape Kennedy"? That is not clear, but there now appears to be one there now called "Kennedy Space Center"!
Image

Belleview Florida is about 40 miles north west of Orlando, in Marion County, with a population of around 4,500. The name, Belleview, which means beautiful view, came from one of the original settlers whose daughter was named “Belle”. Said to be "The City with Small Town Charm", in the 1920s, fire destroyed almost all of the wood buildings in the centre of town. Only the Masonic Hall, which housed the post office, was spared & it still stands to this day. That building is located on Front Street. A second post office was built on the corner of Magnolia & Southeast Hames Road in 1954. A third post office was built in the 1960s, right next door to the second one on Hames Rd.

Artcraft started making fdc cachets in 1939 & were the most popular. They used plain black ink engraved designs. Sometimes they had more than one design as they did with JFK, both of which I displayed on the first page under Boston.

Cocoa Florida in Brevard County, with a population of about 17,000. Founded by fishermen around 1860, the origin of the name is unclear. A post office was established at Magnolia Point, & the city's first commercial building was erected in 1881. 1882 saw new settlement made under the name "Indian River City", which was unacceptable to the U.S. Postal authorities who claimed it was too long for use on a postmark. Not to be confused with "Cocoa Beach" where "a pink genie" resides, Cocoa is about 8 miles west of the city of Cape Canaveral.

Green Cove Springs is in Clay County, Florida, with a population of around 7,000. The city is named after the portion of the St. Johns River upon which the city is built. The river bends here, & the area is sheltered by trees that are perennially green. First inhabited over 7,000 years ago by natives drawn by the warm mineral spring, known as the "Original Fountain of Youth". In the 19th Century it was a big tourist attraction. First developed by George E. Clarke in 1816 when he was provided land, under a Spanish land grant to build a sawmill. Green Cove Springs was established in 1854 as White Sulfur Springs but renamed in 1866. A U.S. post office was established nearby at Hibernia on June 19, 1849, but its name was changed on October 17, 1853 to Magnolia Mills, & on July 30, 1866, it was changed to Green Cove Springs.

Panama City is in Bay County, Florida & is the largest city (incorporated in 1909) between Tallahassee & Pensacola with a population of about 37,000 The original name of the town was Harrison, but was given it's present name because it was on a direct line between Chicago & Panama City, Panama, in Central America. Pensacola is the westernmost city in the Florida Panhandle with a population around 52,000. Pensacola was founded in 1559 by a Spanish explorer named Tristán de Luna y Arellano. It was officially America's first settlement. After about 116 years of Spanish rule, the French took control over Pensacola from 1719 to 1722. The colony was then passed to the British who seized control of Pensacola temporarily through the Peace of Paris. Pensacola was also named the capital of the new British Colony. During the Civil War, Pensacola was a part of the Confederacy. The U S later regained control, & Pensacola was once again a part of the union on May 1862. Pensacola is a sea port on Pensacola Bay, which connects to the Gulf of Mexico. It is nicknamed "The City of Five Flags" due to the five governments that have flown flags over it during its history: the flags of Spain (Castile), France, Great Britain, the Confederate States of America, & the U S.
