I bought an old German collection years ago? Included within the collection was this group of stamps. The prior owner had labled them in German. I have not done the translation, but it appears to be something to do with the cancellations. Does anyone see anything?

Must be the cancels as stamps are pretty much junk box stuff.

Living in BAD ODER must have been fun!

I agree, they are junk stamps, and it is the cancellations. But the collection they can from was a high quality collection. There is something special about these, just not sure what!

German collectors love "socked on the nose" cancels which show the full town name.

As these are for smaller towns (ie not Berlin, Munich, Leipzig) they will have some interest for a collector of cancels - so maybe not entirely "junk"

Hi there. Actually *may be* the Germania 10pf is special... you almost never know  (trust me, no one knows...)

There is a hole different universe for Germanias ;)

But I think its an inexpensive Mi 86-I-a, Lebhaft-bis dunkelkarminröt (lilabraun using a UV lamp)....

The other one probably is Mi 141 gelblichorange bis rötlichorange.... not expensive at all, neither.

The problem is how to recognize precisely the shades of Germanias.... (almost like rocket-science pre-WernhervonBraun era)

kind regards

Later I´ll try to upload some images of luxury-wannabe Germanias (€ 1600 Germania, for example).

I know it's funny, but no one would call the town Bad Oder. The town is Bad Freienwalde (the spa in the forest, more or less) in the "Oder" river district.

doug2222usa, I guess you've never been to Germany and seen some of the stuff they eat. Just kidding, I loved my time in Germany.

I lived there 15 months, courtesy of the U.S. Army: Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, and Boeblingen.

While we're doing Germania heads, I'd love to see someone post the "large" and "regular" "Reichspost" side by side; Michel #58 I to #62 I versus #58-62, even just one value.

I've never seen these, and don't know what to look for, other than Michel's cruddy illustration.

Is this the "thick" and "thin" Reichpost -

Copied from the SG Germany Catalogue, 1996 - if their illustration is any better than Michel's :!:

And no, I don't have any of them either ...

Dave.

Yes, that's it, plus a great illustration!!

As you can see, these elusive early printings are worth a fortune, but could turn up in the most boring junk mix. Thanks very much!

edit: I am thinking the easiest way to spot them is the upright of the "R" compared to the internal frame line to its left; no magnifying glass needed.

I went back and looked at mine again.

I think the "thick" Reichpost is the one that's on all the lower values of that set.

Looking at the higher values, the distinguishing feature on all mine is the larger gap to the let of the 'R' - as in

And, after having another look at them all - still can't retire

I mentioned the "R" because on the valuable variety, ONE upright of the R would just about fit into the space between its upright and the vertical frame line to its left.

On the common variety, it would take about 3 uprights to fill that space. Look again.

For 40 years, I have wanted to see them side by side; I have 100s and 100s to examine.

Also note the difference in the distance between the ends of the letter C; the crossbar of the following H provides a good reference point for comparison.

Quote:
The Michel Catalog more properly refers to these as "the so-called First Printings". According to the Michel Catalog, these were actually "essays", which were intentionally printed in very small quantities, and which were provided to philatelic publications for publicity purposes. Thus, they were never issued by the German Empire postal authorities and sent to the post offices for sale to the public.

Ahoj there Clicker!

Going back to your original post, I think the stamps were merely duplicates put to one side to give to a friend Herr Mischler, who collected clear near-complete cancellations.

The thing that immediately struck me was the way that, on the thick one, the 'S" is leaning over backwards towards the O. Bearing in mind the nature of many postmarks of the era, you will need more than one way to tell. (Like Danish bicolour inverted frames!)
