ADVANCE NOTICE -- New Eustis Airmail Cat - an ESSENTIAL handbook. At LAST!!! Charles Leski has taken over publishing the famous Eustis Airmail Cat and the first edition for 6 years is about to lob onto the market. Best news its it is large A4, with tons more listings, tons more photos and ACCURATE prices for a change! I am getting mine way before most dealers will have even heard it exists. They are $A100 RRP for the board cover illustrated (my preference always for heavily used catalogues) and $A130 RRP for hard bound copy. It is about 300 x large A4 pages. Here is Charles Leski run down on it today- Thanks for your interest Glen. I'll get a review copy to you as soon as it arrives. You will find it a dramatically enlarged and improved book.
Firstly, it's large A4 format. This has enabled us to include many more illustrations; there are many new entries, with particular emphasis on intermediates which have previously been lumped together.
Many errors and omissions in the text have been found and corrected and, of course, the valuations have been updated.
This has involved collating 1000s of prices from auctions (Lusk's, Harmers, Bonham's, Cherrystone, Gibbons, Prestige and others,) as well as dealer's lists and internet sales. A big job.
The previous edition sold out late last year so it seemed good timing to get this project on the go, especially as we have Nelson Eustis's exhibition collection coming up for auction on March 31st.
Best wishes for 2008,
CharlesIf you collect Australia or New Guinea or Papua or NZ airmail covers you are a MUG not to own this volume. Full stop! As you know it also lists all rocket mail. pigeon posts, parachute mail, balloon posts etc. Superb looking item as you can see - $A100 hard cover or $130 for bound book cover, both plus post. The last 2002 edition was less than 400 small A5 pages, and cost $82.50, so this is equivalent to about 600 pages of that format - showing how much new info is in there! At $100 is it clearly GREAT value. Glen --------------------- Call it 'AAMC Cat on StampBoards' and please order via: http://www.glenstephens.com/order.html and all payment details are on: http://www.glenstephens.com/payment.html Remember adding another light lot of mine here (or on website) for sale in general adds ZERO to your shipping cost, so have a good look at what is on offer here in case something else appeals: http://www.stampboards.com/viewforum.php?f=27And many similar mouth watering NETT price offers are being loaded weekly onto - http://www.glenstephens.com/rarity.html and http://www.glenstephens.com/specials.htmlemail me with any queries .. glen (at} glenstephens.com .

Any updates on Eustis- I know publishers timescales are very "flexible" sometimes?

slayer .. yes when printed overseas VERY flexible is the term!
Charles told me mid Feb was his plan, but no sign at his end yet.
He will get mine to me ASAP as he wants it reviewed in magazines on 3 continents.

FINALLY I'll be getting mine this week after a mix up. I saw Charles Leski and Editor Tom Frommer in Canberra Show last weekend (and signed Tom up as a member here!) but they did not have my stock copies with them, so were unable to bring them back. Should be to hand this week. I can mail right away if anyone else needs one.

Glen
Every time this thread gets ressurrected, my eyes light up (or it could be the vodka..who knows?)
You've got it, you've read it, you've reviewed it....any news on shipping out the orders?
I've got a week off in 3 weeks time n Eustis arriving before then would see me happy as a pig in muck for at least 4 out of 5 days (Mrs Slayer wants the septic tank digging out so day 5 is spoken for!)
thanks

Just going through my collection of FFC's with this edition, I've found some that weren't listed in the previous edition but are now as variants.
Some I thought were reasonably common at $30 to $40 each are now listed in the $250 plus range each
If you collect Australian FFC's either for internal or external flights, you cannot do without this catalogue

Okay...I've been convinced I need a copy - even though flight covers are not an area that especially interests me, (but the stamps attached do), it still isn't a good reason to neglect the covers I do have - especially since Glen just identified a flight cover using the catalogue that was worth considerably more than I would have anticipated.
As such - I do have one question to all of you who have purchased the catalogue to date...
Borad cover illustrated or hard bound copy - is there a difference in ease of use between the two?

Sean ... the $100 ones have quite stiff hard covers .. thicker than all the ACSC volumes for instance.
They only did the really hard covers as libraries appear to ask for those, and as they do not make many, (and can charge libraries what they like basically!) the cost is for some reason, $30 higher!
I happily use the $100 version for my own use.
But naturally I make more selling you the $130 version .. your choice.
Glen

Thanks Glen, much appreciated. Got mine today, looks very informative indeed! P.S - Regarding my 'lost' emails in my attempt to order a Perf Gauge last week, and now that the catalogue has arrived; i'll put another order in soon for something and ill add the gauge in then if thats ok. Thanks again! Cheers

$A100 book is only about $US65 at this week's low rate!

Seems to be a lot of questions about air covers on stampboards lately.
Finding just one half decent cover locally or on ebay priced at the OLD Eustis will pay for this book EASILY!

When I got this new addition the very old one I had went into the bin. This one has so many additional covers and varieties of covers it's incredible. It reignited my lapsed interest in flight covers so much I now have an FFC entry going into the Melbourne Stamp Show

Diver Pete wrote: You may find that you can get some roo covers at a much cheaper price as there are some early overseas mail with Roos. Pete and I discussed this cover below yesterday arvo when he popped around, as it was laying on my desk, and he already had that Eustis number. This is a most attractive cover, no matter WHAT the franking. Piloted by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith from Darwin, it has the unusual bonus of a full set of the 3 "Smithy" stamps on it. Scarce together on ANY kind of cover - especially one he piloted! (The trio are cat ACSC $170 on commercial covers.) Back-stamped England on arrival, (on a GB which was not supposed to occur according to AAMC, except for Reg'd. Quite superb strike of the large violet cachet. AND has a 1/- Small Multi Roo as Peter refers to -- cat $150 on cover. This is 77 years old, in good shape and is $A90 when I list it up. The stamps soaked OFF cover are worth decent money on their own! The current Post Office annual book costs $100 for goodness sakes! If the franking was just 1 or 2 more usual stamps, it would still be $50, so the Roo and Smithy set on cover etc is not even doubling the cost - in THIS case. That is thing about Eustis. . the value is for the most COMMON variant found .. anything on top of that adds to the price .. often a lot. This flight often used just plain envelopes, so the large pictorial ones are clearly better looking, and sell for more. Interesting variations in franking do the same. I have about 3 x Eustis Cats on hand after I mail out sparkiephil's copy, for those interested. The amount of detail given now of the more popular flights is double what you got in the older editions. When chatting to Peter I remembered I'd bought this cover below over a year or so back, and it was buried in the rubble on my desk. It cost me around $200 at auction. No dealer in this country would sell it for much more than about $30 is my guess. I'll ask and get $250 very easily. That profit pays for TWO x Eustis right there. There is nothing on this cover that looks different than the ones most readers have for this flight. Not the stamp, overprint, cachets, fonts, size, back-stamping, addressee, postmarks etc ..... all are 100% normal - identical to your copy. Why is it worth $200 more to ME than YOU likely think it is worth? Unless you have an AAMC you will never know. As I have typed here 1000 times - "Knowledge Is Power"

As I have typed here 1000 times - "Knowledge Is Power" I've noticed that since this latest AAMC edition came out which identified the use of the June flight cachet (originally produced for the 1934 Aust.-Papua flight that was cancelled) rather than the actual 27th. July flight cachet these are never seen on eBay now: Collectors are no doubt either keeping them or selling them at auction since they are now listed and valued in the AAMC starting at $250

Good point Tony .. again having CURRENT Cats very fast pays for itself. This "$50" cover below was proably a little cheap anyway as it had a scarce Plate Number "1" 3d single and a sheet number 7d NZ (and BOTH prints of the 2d Bridge!) has just become an $A80 cover, due to another member's very sharp eyes! (Thank you!) DiverPete pointed out yesterday the cancel on this cover I had laying about reads "19 84" and he indicated others have seen this before! Just can't be over-inking .. indeed this is a very weak strike as you can see - so discount over-inking entirely. As they applied 11,471 of these rubber cancels to this flight, clearly a number of rubber stampers were made, and one (or maybe all?) of them seems to have been clearly "19 84" ... how juicy and ORWELLIAN!The AAMC Editor, Tom Frommer is a member of this board - I signed him up myself in Canberra, so I'll pass this on for consideration in next edition.
