Just got hooked on stamps again since I bought a few on a flee market 2 years ago but I have had a interest for them throughout my life.
I collect mainly Persia/Iran, classics and stamps of revolutions.

Hello there,

I am new here. You can call me Ox. Since a young age, I like to collect things that I find interesting, rare, valuable. That's how I started collecting rare coins, banknotes. This have brought a curse upon me of hoarding rare items and never selling them.

Now, I managed to get my hands on some old postage stamps and I wanted to find community to understand how postage stamp collecting works. Currently I have some postage stamps from around the globe . My goal, as I think you've already guessed it, is to figure it out postage stamp collecting.

I hope that we'll get along and find some interesting topics to discuss.

I live in UK. I used to collect GB and British Commonwealth. I sold my collection when I retired.

A friends grandson (11) has been left a large collection of world stamps and they have asked me to help him with them.

He seems interested so I thought I would join your forum for advice on anything I come across that is beyond by knowledge.

Two quite different collecting "levels" representing what motivates each of you.
The specialised subjects for CJ will no doubt find fellow specialist interest on
Stampboards.

On the other hand, it might be that webnt has to resist being too specialised
in order to mentor an 11 year old. Do your best to find out what interests the
11 year old by asking him (rather than asking his parents!). If you give some
insight into the possibility of collecting stamps that are all about a particular
topic, and the fun of learning more about the topic from the stamps, that
might turn out to be a fruitful direction for an 11 year old beginner...
(For over a decade I acted as a mentor for groups of children in that kind of
age range. It was topical/subject collecting that caught the imagination of
most of them. Some also got interested in having a least one stamp from
as many different countries as possible. Both approaches are "road tested"
for this age group.)

Hello everyone!
I’ve been a lurker here for quite a while and I am absolutely fascinated with the quality of discussions and the breadth of knowledge that is shared here every day. I have already learned a lot from reading those and I hope to learn even more by actively participating.
I would say that I am long overdue and happy to have finally registered!

My primary area of interest are perfins (pretty much worldwide but with focus on Eastern and Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand). Through perfins, and with no small influence of this very board, I have recently developed an interest in Australia KGV issue and I think I am falling down this rabbit hole quite fast now...

As mentioned above, I have benefited tremendously from the collective knowledge shared here and now I hope to “pay it back” by sharing some of my own. I look forward to interesting discussions with “y’all”!

Hello all

I live in Canberra, Australia, and am a world collector, with a focus on British Commonwealth countries like Australia, GB, NZ etc. The good thing about being a world collector is that you'll always find something to interest you when you're at a stamp market or looking at circuit books. (That's also the bad thing!)

I'll never be the kind of collector who enters an exhibit at exhibitions, because I don't think I'll ever specialise in any one area - although who knows? But I get a huge amount of enjoyment from collecting, like most of the members of this forum, I'm sure. I've been very impressed by the willingness of members of this forum to share information, and the huge amount of information available on the forum, and look forward to learning much more, and maybe contributing where possible.

My wife and I had a memorable stay of about a week in Wrocław just a few years ago.
A good friend of mine vacated his apartment temporarily so we could stay in it for
our visit. We sampled a new piece of culture in Wrocław each day we were there —
the tiny gnome statues, the locomotive heading skywards, the Racławice Panorama,
the museum, the university, the Wrocław Cathedral...

Your worldwide stamp collecting is just what stamp collecting was for many of us when we started out.
The only reason we pull back to more constrained/focussed collecting is that there are just too many
world issues to keep up with, and it's overwhelming if you have a "completeness bug" in your collecting
motivation. On the other hand, if you have a "collecting what I like" orientation, there are always new
additions waiting for your collection in every stamp fair and every circuit book, so that's great...

Here's a suggestion. Between being a "solo/private collector" and a "specialist" there is the "social collector"
dimension of philately, which I recommend. Find one or two stamp clubs/societies in your area (there are
several in ACT), visit them for a couple of meetings, find one that suits your personal style/preferences,
and become a regular member. Sooner or later you will get a chance to exhibit a few pages of your stamps
or covers or other philatelic items (show and tell session; members' display night; annual club competition;
selected pages on a topic starting with "C"; etc). You will find that gradually you build the experience for
writing up a few pages of nice items to show others. You will discover that it's not only pleasant to share
your enjoyment of those items with others, you actually also learn more about them as you work on the
write up, and you will identify other items you would like to add to that part of your collection so that
next time you show pages from it you will have a more rounded or more in-depth version of the subject
to show... All that is much below the formality and specialised level of entering in an exhibition, but being
a "social collector" is a very satisfying level stamp collecting. The "solo/private collector" misses out on this.

By the way, browsing on Stampboards, and adding an occasional post, is also an available dimension in becoming a happy "social collector". Look, you've already started

Hi

My name is Dan, I'm from Bucharest, Romania.

I'm 42 years old and I have been collecting stamps since I was 10 years old.
I enjoy collecting all kind of stamps:

- all world - 19th century and early 20th century
- Commonwealth stamps
- modern era stamps, but I like to be used
- some envelope (censored/army mails), forgeries and errors (especially printing errors)

Also I sell my extra stamps, but not in "business way"...in daily life I'm a programmer.

I'm happy to join this forum, is full of knowledge and I hope that I will also contribute something or at least be able to read everything that is here.

One of my wishes is to be able to gather as much information about stamps as possible, to organize them in a site and to be accessible to everyone...a lot of information is lost...

But now it's just a dream...work and family keep me busy all the time, in a pleasant way.

Your vision of having all stamp information organised in a fully accessible form is
evidently something you've decided is unrealistic... Stampboards is a fine sort of
actual collection of philatelic information/knowledge. It's practical because you
can use the search box at the top right corner of the page, and it works very
well. I like the maxim: The perfect is the enemy of the good.
I think it applies here, don't you‽

Over time I have found a lot of valuable information that is no longer accessible.

And I'm not the only one. I'm sure many of us make a copy of the site, make excel files, prints, etc. for this reason ... many pages disappear after a while. I am referring to this type of information.

And like I said, it's just a dream for now, so don't take my dream! : D

This post will be one closer getting off the newbies. Having just turned another year younger as we elderly prefer to jest. I find myself doing those things I used to only dream of doing.

My Worldwide collection increased when I assisted a small dealer organization her loose stamps and when I was to take them back her shop was gone and so was she.

So I now have surplus of surplus stamps and living in rural Idaho in the USA few ways of dispersal. Also my OCD ( obsessive compulsive disorder) tells me to hold on while my better half (wife) tells me to reduce what I have due to my ripening age.

Dilemma, Dilemma after Dilemma. Life is so fun. But I babble so I will end this one the sage’s advice.
Keep on Keeping on.

Sounds just like the "discussions" in my house. My standard reply is that my hobby is currently collecting stamps and my hobby after I retire in 2-3 years will be selling stamps.
