POLL: Photo of well known Stamp Collector - "WHO AM I?" ?????

A bit of fun. :)

Wedding photo taken of this person. Had not seen this before so do not think it has had much publicity.

One guess per person please, TICK THE BOX OF YOUR FIRST CHOICE, and anyone caught googling or searching will have their typing finger chopped off! We have CCTV cameras watching your EVERY move.

Make a guess and see if you are right - it is fun. ALL members can take a quick guess! Any fun comments can be added of course, as usual.

I will only give one clue - this person kept a "Gold Album" and was immensely proud of the contents.

He looks vaguely Italian and the clothing seems to be of the correct era so I looked down the list and picked the first Italian sounding name on it. My guess based on that fuzzy logic  is the stamp forger, Jean Sperati.

Looks like UK dealer/collector Charles Nissen to me who sold a lot of stuff to the Royals. Clothing seems Edwardian to me.

The man's hat looks like a boater hat, at least I think that is the name for it - and if I remeber right Franklin Delano Roosevelt wore a hat like that so I guess him.

I don't recall some of them being married, ie. Ferrary.

The clothes and style might help narrow the field of guesses a bit?

FWIW I went with Caruso, but I'm absolutely awful at recognizing people.

I have two of Max's Books with photos of him in them. It is not him. I am willing to run with Alex Rosenblum. The era "feels" right.

I could go through each person one by one, and say why I believe it is not them, but life is too short. Certainly the "royalty" people would probably never had a photograph taken wearing what appears to be a Boater, Gibbons himself was probably too early, as do some of the others. Some of the others appear to be too late for this style of clothing, and even this Photographic style... suffice to say it is just a gut feeling.

The thread title could be interpreted different ways..."well known Stamp Collector"...it could be,

- someone famous for being a stamp collector
- someone famous who happened to collect stamps
- someone who's famous within the philatelic community (but otherwise unknown)

Must have taken some time to type up that list of 50 names, good reference to have in 1 place. 8)

I once lived in a Nissen hut... so Charles Nissen it is.

I think it would be much easier to say who it ISN'T, rather than who it is, that way I could delete Farouk, the Shah of Persia and the Cardinal, reducing the odd to a more manageable 1 from 47

I went for one of the many that I don't know - about 90% I think.

The feathers in the lady's hat? Eagle? So I looked for an American name and chose Farley. After seriously considering two continental names, not the ones that are leading the race at present.

Great thought provoking idea.

No idea, but from the photo I'd say it was taken between 1905 and 1915 probably European origin, so by process of elimination I'll go for King Alphonso Xiii of Spain...tricky one this.

The lady looks French for sure, he could be an American with that hat, looks like a punter from a Monet painting. Umbrella, could be English, and warm clothes,

That is a parasol or umbrella, not a riding crop, that she is holding.

Great initiative, Glen . . . although my Lawyers are looking in to a flattery by philately case in including me amongst this illustrious group.

I can, however, assist participants in reducing the numbers slightly:

Alex Rosenblum is listed as nos. 4 and 29; there appears to be no no. 46?

No. 25 is not me, the person seated, either.

I'll go for Louis Senf.

but looked at the wedding outfit of the wife, parasol and all, and went for Purves.

A riding crop would be handy, on the wedding night
Philly

That is a parasol or umbrella, not a riding crop, that she is holding.

Brad :)
Either way I bet it's battery powered

Re: POLL: Photo of well known Stamp Collector - "WHO AM I?"

The list of famous collectors is very interesting. I, too, never would have guessed that Lugosi collected stamps.

I went with Roosevelt because of the hat. (Someone else noted that.) Doesn't look too much like FDR and Eleanor, but I had to pick someone.

Interesting also is that the man is seated and the woman is standing. Goes to show how times have changed. (Unless it is Roosevelt and he was already stricken with Polio.)

Jean de Sperati, he must have collected stamps, how else could he have templates from which to make his fakes.

Also fits date wise, he was born in the 1880s, the clothes of the woman are very 1912 to 1914 style, meaning Sperati was 25 - 30 here.
