Join the stampboards gang fun LIVE from "Melbourne 2017"!

Post by Global Administrator »

This large FIAP International show is upon us, in LESS than 1 month from me typing this.

Thursday March 30 to Sunday April 2. ALL the info you will ever need to know is here -

https://melbourne2017.com.au/

Out at Caulfield Racecourse .. inner suburbs Melbourne basically. Easy train or tram ride they assure me. 8)

There are a great range of souvenir philatelic items for Melbourne 2017 already available. See the Melbourne 2017 thread for details:

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=71289

Stampboards has kindly been allocated a nice big area by the Committee, for members to pop by, and chat and surf the web etc, as we did so successfully at Melbourne 2013.

Where heaps of members popped by to chat, meet up, and pass on info on all the hot stuff being issued etc, from which many paid for their trips down, many times over. TONS of pix of them and the action are here - DO take a look -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=42101&p=3359125

I hope to see a LOT of familiar and new faces - add a note here if you are attending please.

I hope we can organise a dinner on the Friday night - Saturday is the Palmares Award Night Dinner and some of our members will need to be there, so Friday works best I think.

Whether we hold it around Caulfield, or in the city does not bother me - anyone with any suggestions please chime in! But being Friday getting a booking for 20 or 30 or maybe 40 folks is TOUGH, so please commit ASAP if you will be making it so we can get cracking on it. (Our 2013 Dinner was about 50.) Will not be expensive, is our aim.

The Committee have kindly allocated us a Meeting Room from noon to 1pm Saturday April 1 - so get along there too. It was 'Standing Room Only' in 2013. 8)

April 1st just happens to be our TENTH Birthday of going "live" - so we will arrange a cake for the occasion, for those at the meeting, and some goodies. :)

Margo works Thursday until late, so we can't fly up until the Friday on first 6am flight (groan) so can I ask if there are any members around Thursday who can offer to volunteer an hour or so each to loosely hold the fort until we arrive?

If a few folks can do that, I can forward our banner and cards and stuff direct to you to take along on Thursday, and we will take back with us on plane Sunday night.

We DO need to borrow a flat screen TV we can plug our laptops into, if someone might be able to loan us one locally - clearly we can't fly that down!

I have the SCART cable to connect the two.

This size home TV below is fine as you see here - here we were showing Arthur Gray how stampboards works!
Image
We also need a couple of extension leads and power boxes that are legally "tagged" and dated as 'Vic Compliant' - these venues usually have them all inspected rigorously. Anything we bring from here is VERBOTEN under Vic law.

If you can assist with any of this please chime in soon, so we can join up the dots, and get things moving - time MARCHES on!

I'll be there on Friday morning as the Papuan Philatelic Society meeting will be on that afternoon. I volunteered  to do the intro and a short talk. Speakers include some of the leading experts on Papua, New Guinea, GNG, NWPI, etc. Everyone is welcome to attend, details to follow.

Friday night Stampboards dinner sounds good as always, so please put me on the list + possibly my wife as well.

As I have advised to Glen, if equipment is be brought into the venue then the following will need to be adherred to.

8.12 Testing and Tagging of Electrical Equipment
All portable electrical equipment, appliances and leads must be tested and tagged in accordance with Australian Standard 3760 and Workplace Health & Safety Legislation.

An accredited electrician will be available to test and tag any electrical equipment you will be using. The electrician will be onsite during the move in period, from 12.00pm - 4.00pm on Wednesday 29th March.

Please note: If your electrical equipment is not tagged and tested you will be asked to remove it or incur a minimum $288 fee for an electrician to inspect it. This includes computer power cords and mobile phone chargers

If we know who is coming to setup we will have the name/s registered to be admitted on the Wednesday for setting up.

I will be there for the 4 days and the dinner.

I won't be there until after lunch, Sammy Stamps takes priority on a Thursday.

It is a timely reminder to pay a visit to the chocolate factory. :D

Yoo Hoo ... Paul's choccie nibbles were one of the highlights of 2013!

I heard today that next to us is Kevin Morgan's "Stamp News" table. Kevin plans to get the next magazine mailed a week or so BEFORE the show starts, to keep the vibe strong and current. :)

We are upstairs where ALL the Exhibits will be, so will be a lot of foot traffic up there, and no other stands or dealers in that area which is a plus.

Graphic Whiz member Allanswood this week came up with this great artwork for a 2 metre high free standing banner we are having made, to ID the location for all!

Greg did a lot of work on this and gets thanks from all members I am sure for his skill!

I am looking at booking Zagame's function room for Friday 31st March, right next door to the Racecourse.

To use the function room we will need a minimum of 20 confirmed bookings. This needs to happen quickly or the function room may be booked by another party.

2 course dinner for $39, 3 course for only $6 more at $45, drinks at Bar Prices. Here is a link:

http://www.zagames.com.au/assets/Uploads/PDF/ZAGAMES-caulfield-FUNCTION-PACK-web2.pdf
Post here to confirm your booking please.

Change of plan, will need to find another venue. As it is a Friday Zagame's require a minimum spend of $2600 plus $600 hiring fee to to use the function room.

Why they could not have told me that in the first place, and why they do not mention it in the detail on their webpage beats me!

I shall keep you posted.

Hi everyone,

sounds like you are all going to have fun. Wish I was closer, maybe next Melbourne!

Wanted to ask if one of you could do me a favour? I was hoping for two covers to be sent to me from the show with the show cancel.

1. Complete set of Rare Beauties on one cover.

2. Arthur Streeton and Sidney Nolan set of two on a second cover.

Could any of you do that for me please? I will Paypal the funds in advance and send a nice cover from Germany as a thank you. Thanks for considering.

Have details been settled of where and when, yet? Not clear from the above posts (and I'm not very bright).

Please put Graeme and Diana Morriss down as definites.

May I humbly suggest that any other takers put there names here soon so that someone (who?) can make a booking. As Glen said, its a Friday - we will have to book soon.

Could we put a 'sticky' post at the top of the Index to alert people to this?

Thanks to all those working to organise this.

Greek is fine Paul. The Mixed banquet for $50 might be good if there's not enough people.

I've never met a Greek restaurant I didn't like.

In Melbourne or Sydney. We Sinneysiders are venturing down just as the AFL season commences.

Let the games begin.

Can I make a suggestion?

As we all like to put a face to a name, can one volunteer person (with a relief) have the prime responsibility of photographing Members and recording their user names?

I used to work on Trade Shows in Australia, Europe and the U.S. and it made such a difference to all - other people working our Stands; staff back home etc. - to bring back a heap of photos for all and sundry.

One day, perhaps, we can build a Rogues' Gallery of Members in the one topic.

This will allow MargoZ and Glen to freely meet and greet.

Catch the bus from Melbourne Airport Tullamarine to Southern Cross Railway Station Spencer St., Melbourne - about $15 or so every 15 minutes or so.

Then Bus to Caulfield - get to intersection of Bond Street and Flinders Street

(Firstly take the Tram along Collins Street to Queen St. or walk)

BUS
Image

Or Tram to Caulfield - get to City Square Swanston Street

(Firstly take the Tram along Collins Street to Swanston St. or walk)

TRAM
Image

Then travel along Swanston Street/St. Kilda Road south-east across the Yarra River and Arts Centre Spire and Alexandria Gardens and Shrine of Remembrance and Government House - if you see most/all of these, you're going in the right direction! :)

To help - Melbourne Main Streets West To East:-

Southern Cross Station/Spencer/King/William/Queen/Elizabeth/ Swanston/Russell/Exhibition/ Spring/Parliament House

Melbourne City South To North From Yarra River:-

Flinders/Flinders Lane/Collins/Little Collins/Bourke/Little Bourke/Lonsdale/Latrobe etc

Bazza,

So the train is every 2 hours and the bus is twice daily, is that correct :?:

We are staying near Flinders St. Station so either will suit us (though the train is much quicker).

Also do we need to get a card and load it up for train/bus travel which is the only way possible with the NSW Opal cards or can you just buy return tickets for each trip :?:

The train to Caulfield is much more frequesnt than that, it will be every few minutes from Flinders Street or Southern Cross.

You can use the Pakenham, Cranbourne or Frankston line trains.

A myki daily is around $9.00 and can be used on all trains, trams and buses. (plus $6 for the card)

The station is just across the road from the racecourse and the train will be much quicker than the tram.

The trams in the city centre are free in the area on the map below. Basically the area in the red line but down to docklands and not across the Yarra River. Think the Hoddle grid.

Peter -- doors close at about 6pm -

http://melbourne2017.com.au/

I'd imagine dinner would be 6.45pm to 7pm 'ish' if restaurant is pretty close which Paul indicated it was.

Will that fit your plane time?

PLATTERS

Seafood platter for 2 persons - $34 a head

Combination of:

Fresh Fillet

Prawns

Calamari

Mussels (when available)

Oysters (when available)

grilled meat platter for 2 persons - $34 a head

Combination of:

Lamb cutlets

Lamb or Chicken Souvlaki

Spicy Lamb

Biftekia
Paul .... Also noticed on their menu there is a $50 a head flat deal for food and tea and coffee - Maybe if we promise them 20+ they'll do the BYO bit included in the $50 a head - I often do that for Sydney functions. :)

Might be worth asking.

I am about to do a MASS mailout to all members which will add 5 or 10 persons to the tally, so if we get that firmed up for sure and a TIME set, we are good to go.

The Saturday Palmares Dinner is $175 a head so we are getting away with a decent price it seems for a Friday.

I rang today and booked for 20.

BYO wine only.

A reminder for me to confirm numbers a few days before.

I note there is a tram stop outside, so you can catch a tram back into the city.

I haven't been there but the reviews are good and it is close.

Good stuff Paul, and all members are reminded to pack a bottle or 2 of wine before heading off there!

I understand 'Stamp News' will be set up next to us upstairs, so do drop by - Traralgon3844 has offered to keep the choccie bowl full to overflowing, so an even better reason to head on upstairs to the exhibits area, and hang out in that area!

This 'Stamp News' above with the show on front cover. is being produced extra early to be mailed out, and at newsagents BEFORE the show to maximise attendance.

Stampboards summary for Melbourne 2017, March 30/April 2

Post by MargoZ »

This large FIAP International show is only a fortnight away running from Thursday March 30, to Sunday April 2 at Caulfield Race Course.

ALL the info you will ever need to know is here - http://melbourne2017.com.au/

There are a great range of souvenir philatelic items for Melbourne 2017 already available. See the Melbourne 2017 thread for details:
http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=71289

As part of the show there will be the following Stampboards activities:

Stampboards corner at the show

Stampboards has kindly been allocated a nice big area by the Committee, and it will be operating with a computer and large screen monitor throughout the show.

We’ll be upstairs in the stamp exhibition space, so do drop by and say hello, enjoy some high calorie nibbles and meet some fellow - Stampboarders. Look for the large yellow posters!

The Stampboards area at Melbourne 2013 was a huge success with dozens of members dropping by and catching up - DO take a look - http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=42101&p=3359125

Stampboards meeting Saturday April 1st, 12 noon to 1pm

Help celebrate 10 years of the board – first started on 1st April 2007 - so that meeting is on the exact 10th Year Anniversary date!

Special Cake with our logo on top, and goodies to thank members for their support over the past decade.

Stampboards dinner Friday 31st 7pm+

Mediterranean Greek Tavern, 511 Glen Huntly Rd, Elsternwick.

Only 7 minutes by car from the Race Course - we will look at car pooling, and there is a tram stop outside too so anyone heading back to city etc has easy access.

Full information [at] http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=75801

Please post on the thread if you are coming as we need to confirm numbers with the restaurant next week.

Stampboards reporting live from the show

Can’t make it to Melbourne? We’ll bring Melbourne to you with frequent updates and pictures live from the show. Just check out this thread during the show.

What an exciting time of the year, with both the FIAP International ahead and Stampboards' 10th anniversary!

Unfortunately I don't get the time to jump around on these boards like I did before postgraduate studies, but take a quick peek every so often. Had been looking forward to the FIAP show for months, if not years, but won't be able to make it.

Such a pity, it would have been great to celebrate with you all. Do post lots of images up for those who won't be there to share the occasion
