Reversed watermark Queensland Chalon stamp - unusual?

Post by maelstrom »

As it appears I haven't logged on since 2012! I thought I should say Hello from Exeter, Devonshire, England. Retired company director with a few stamps.

I am amazed at the amount of knowledge about philately I don't have after reading some of the Forum topics!

So, I wondered if someone could enlighten me regarding this stamp which is a fairly tired-looking Queensland two pence Chalon with a numerical cancel of 81 and what I believe to be a reversed watermark.

Question is; Is it unusual for this stamp to have a reversed watermark? Is there any value in the cancellation?

Thanking you in anticipation of a response!

Welcome back.

Gibbons summarise it hence. 8-)

Sadly I never mention such watermarks when selling as they do seem super common!

ID of the Queensland numerals is well covered here -

Actually watermark abnormalities on Queensland stamps are rare. Though this is not always true for other states.

A recent auction at Spink (Diffen) showed a number of watermark abnormals from a range of Australian States but none from Queensland.

Inverted watermarks also exist for Queensland as well as marginal markings, they are definitely not ten-a-penny. Nice find.

The 81 numeral is from Warwick and even on a Chalon is rated common.

Many Thanks ~ I will search 'Warwick' to see where it was cancelled.

Not great value. £5-10, which is ten times the value of a normal stamp.

It was cancelled at Warwick, just over 100kms south west of Brisbane.
