What are the smallest and largest stamps ever issued?

Post by OpusMcN »

Hi,

What's the smallest stamp that was ever issued? I've come across the "half-width" ½d Victoria (at 12mm wide), and lots from South Africa that are similar sized. Anything substantially smaller than that?

(I'm writing some stamp image processing software, and want a reasonable default value for "if it's smaller than this it can't be a stamp")

Cheers,

Craig

Are you thinking of the 1863 10c stamp issued for Bolivar Province of Colombia. It is 8mm x 9.55mm.

No. I think you are thinking of the small regular and postal tax issues of Colombia showing the Posts and Telegraph Ministry.

By the way, I think you have the German "notoper" postal tax issues in mind that were issued by Germany in 1948 to support West Berlin.

Just found those in Scott... That's pretty tiny. And they even used diagonal cut halves as a 5c stamp!

Here it is (blown up a lot!)

I might have to push my limit a bit lower... I hoping 5mm will be small enough :)

Thanks!

Are you going to use an upper limit?

With what's the biggest stamp ever issued? A few recent Aussie $5 stamps were huge!

I remember Guinness (the record book people, not the brewers of course 8)) used to quote that an issue of US Newspaper stamps were the largest ever.

Actually, it's the same Company. The Guiness Book of Records is maintained and published by the Guiness Brewing Company (or was - they started it)

To answer the OP, I believe that Columbia has issued the smallest stamp ever, and that it was actually an an obligatory tax stamp (used on "real" mail), but sorry, I don't recall the details. I will do a follow up if the request is not answered in the next day. It was a little bit smaller than the half size Green Victoria stamp (and others of similar size), but not much.

Yes, they started it norm, but:
wikipedia wrote:The group was owned by Guinness Brewery and subsequently Diageo until 2001, when it was purchased by Gullane Entertainment. Gullane was itself purchased by HiT Entertainment in 2002. In 2006, Apax Partners purchased HiT and subsequently sold Guinness World Records in early 2008 to the Jim Pattison Group, which is also the parent company of Ripley Entertainment, which is licensed to operate Guinness World Records' Attractions.

At one time China claimed the largest postage stamp and it was in Guinness, but I don't know whether that still stands.

I don't know about the smallest stamp, but this must be getting close to the smallest imprint. Perhaps the smallest pre-stamped envelope as well.

the envelopes are 100x65mm
the imprint is 14x14mm

I think you will find that tha largest stamp ever produced is a Dutch issue for TNT coming in at a whopping 60 x 50 CMS (ie not MM). I don't recall the exact circumstances, but it was probably released 4 or 5 years ago and possibly printed by the Dutch stamp printer, Enschede.

German local issue - 1945

Issued by the Postmaster in the town of Fredersdorf bei Berlin.

The "design" measures 14mm x 9mm (apologies for poor quality of the second scan).

The stamps were initialled by the Postmaster or "counter agent" at the point of sale, so are "theoretically" impossible to acquire without the signature.

The biggest and smallest stamps

Post by jpizzle »

What are the biggest and smallest stamps? Particularly those in production today/fairly recently.

Canada's Titanic stamp must be up there as one of the biggest.

And France have quite small stamps, and today I came across a small Sri Lankan stamp. I'll try and get a photo shortly.

There are some US revenues that come in at about 14X8 inches, roughly 36X20 cm; there are also some state revenues for cigarettes that are roughly 1 cm square.

Are you planning to include souvenier sheets as stamps?

If so you are going to have to greatly increase you size limits.
Full page scan will hardly be enough.

[at] jpizzle: Canada's Titanic stamp could hardly be considered that large... in fact, our $10 Blue Whale, at about 10 cm by 4 cm is way bigger compared to it. In fact it may be up there with the larger ones...

I also remember having a tiny stamp in my collection that I thought was ironic as it depicted an elephant... I'll go see if I can remember which country it was (it was in Africa somewhere obviously...)

Smallest stamps

These stamps from Mecklenburg-Schwerin issued in 1856

The stamps are around 23.5 x23mm, but could be divided into four parts of about 11.5 x11.5mm.

Tried to show the actual size deliberately, so don't blame me for tiny image!!

Hi all,

This little chap measures 9.5mm width x 10.5mm high.

I also have the smallest POSTAGE stamp in my collection the Bolivar stamp which I have scanned together with a tiny Victoria State stamp just for comparison.

This toy? stamp is even smaller than the Bolivar stamp! It's now my Avatar for the time being!

I think this could be from the 1950s / 60s.

Any ideas anyone?

Regards

Despite it's listed as a Souvenir Sheet, it's actually designed as a large stamp.
