Can anyone help with info on Telegraph Stamps, etc?

Post by mcgooley »

These items came in a stockbook of Victorian stamps I received. Some were in glassine envelopes with the name of a country - but nothing else - and some were just tucked away behind other stamps.

In another thread I've posted the American ones, but these seem to come from all over the place. Although the condition ranges from not bad to really lousy, I'm more interested in any information anyone might have on what they are, and what they were used for.

#13 is listed in the old (1980) Commonwealth Five Reigns Catalogue as either VMT9 (watermark rosette) or VMT14 (watermark multiple stars and crescents); 40p for VMT9 and 20p for VMT14

These are Iran Postal Tax Hospital Fund stamps (presumably a compulsory surcharge) first issued in 1950. They are listed in Gibbons as BoBs

Sadly this seller has been mentioned in the eBay dreamers thread.

EDIT: you are not rich.

Oh damn

I never expected any of these to have any monetary value; I suspect some aren't even worth the paper they're printed on, but I've never seen them before and I was more curious about what they were used for in their Country of Origin.

I understand most of these items would be regarded as BoB; I would describe some of them as 'jam-jar labels' :D

It is the usage of Telegraph Stamps fascinates me. Does anyone know if there is some literature which deals with these little fellows?

And many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to answer.

The Turkish locals are part of a set of four, that catalogues about Euro 200 in Michel as I recall. But they're not worth nearly that in the real world:

http://cgi.ebay.com/LIANNOS-Turkey-Local-Post-Imperfs-Blocks ... 4aa82aac81

The La Guaira stamp is a private steamship post stamp from Venezuela, and is worth a few bucks...

http://cgi.ebay.com/SAN-TOMAS-GUAIRA-LOCAL-SHIP-STAMPS-/1106 ... 19c29095e3

Most of the used La Guaira issues you see are fakes, but folks seem to buy them anyway.

Quick question on these... anyone know how many colorations of these were issued? Scott's only shows 2 colors (the first two... emerald and light green (I think)) and I've got a copy of the Postal Tax Stamp #3... but I cannot find anything that lists "brown" type colors for these.

The first two stamps in the picture both have a face value of 50 dirhams for use as obligatory tax stamps on registered letters.

There were also 2 rials stamps for use on parcels and 2.25 (2 rials 25 dirhams) and 2.50 stamps for use on telegrams.

The third stamp here is a 2.25 value which had no postal use so is not listed in Scott.

This 2.25 stamp has different colours from those listed as telegraph tax stamps in the Hiscocks catalogue so this one may have been used for an additional tax on some other type of document or service.

Thanks Nigel... My Iranian collection is tiny (I don't even know why I pulled it out to work on it, other than to get them out of a somewhat nappy stockbook), so I was kind of surprised that I had that one and two others I couldn't/can't find yet (and it may be for the same reasons)
