We have a Penny Black and a Penny Red plating thread, but I'm not aware of a Tuppenny Blue one, so...
I'll start this off with this one:
Obviously either Plate 1 or Plate 2, but what are the distinguishing characteristics?
Thanks in advance to the experts...

Gavin ....
On a quick inspection, I think plate 2
Reasons as illustrated below ...
If I am wrong, there are several here who will correct me, but at least we get the thread moving ..

Thanks, Allan,
If you are right (and I'm not doubting you for one second !) it's good news for me as I already have a Plate 1 GH.
I bought this one because:
(a) it's a black Maltese Cross and my other is a red MC, and
(b) because I put a cheeky low bid on it and kept my fingers crossed.

Very happy, thanks gentlemen...
...and even happier if I claim this as "just four margins"

Would like some assistance with this one, plating and also catalogue value (only have old simplified values) and approximate market value (for Ebay). I bought what seemed like a bargain in a local auction because of nice margins and fairly neat MC cancellation.

Plate 1 from the weak upper left box margin,
Retail is normally about £120-£250 for a good 4 margin but can make more for re-entries, type of maltese cross etc. Yours is very close to touching upper right so would be lower end. As always it depends how fast you wish to sell and being in the right place at the right time.

An 1841 2d Blue for identification, please.
I think this is Plate 4, mainly because I have an identified Plate 3 and the position of the G is higher on that than this.
Please confirm or educate...
Thanks in advance.

Gavin,
Yes, plate 4.
As you have correctly identified, the G on your stamp is positioned slightly to the left and fairly central, whereas on plate 3
the G is positioned higher and to the right.
Chris.

Hi, Morozevich, I've merged this with the thread we already have for plating these stamps.
Hopefully someone will be able to help tell you whether it is Plate 3 or Plate 4 (I think it has to be one or the other...).

What are these plate 3 or 4 selling for generally? I think mine has 4 margins

To give a meaningful valuation on early GB stamps is impossible without seeing a decent image of both front and back of the stamp.
Does it have an inverted watermark? Is there a thin or other damage not seen from the front? Is it repaired? etc, etc.
I wouldn't buy this stamp unless I could see both sides of it.

Here are two examples from my friend´s son collection.
The first is lettered RI and I think it is plate 2 due to non-presence of TW joined and slight small shifted transfer mark at bottom?
And the second is better example, lettered MC, possibly from Plate 1?
This copy also have either a strange Maltese cross or partially double strike. I thank you for your comments.

I'm 99% certain this is Plate 3 - G high and to right compared with Plate 4.
But I thought it was worth showing as a "4 Huge Margins" example, and to bump this thread which is often the poor relation of the 1d Black and 1d Red threads.

A cop indeed, as we trainspotters used to say in the 50s - to get such an example with your initials!
Can anyone plate this 1840 2d blue for me?
Thank you in advance.

Ahoj Bill!
I am more than grateful for your plating help on all types of my line-engraved, so feel free to ignore this request if you feel overburdened, but could someone please help identify this 1841 twopenny blue? Is the blur round the A constant?
Than you in advance,

Hello again Honza,
I am always glad to help when I can.
Your 2d blue 'E-A' is from plate 4.
The blur round the 'A' is due to plate corrosion holding ink. The corrosion was progressive so that on later printings from plate 4 the blur becomes larger.
Have you seen this?

Ahoj Bill,
Thank you yet again! You have come to my aid so often now that I feel you must feel that I am taking advantage of you.
Thank you also for the link - an excellent tutorial.
I have also some perforated 2d blues to identify, so I can now try to identify them myself and put them up here for confirmation only.
Cheers,

Ahoj Bill!
I still find the alphabets confusing. I suppose success comes with practice. I think this one is alphabet 1, so is it plate 4 again?
GB 2d blue perforated 16 small crown watermark alphabet 1 plate 4 lettered DC postmarked 708 SHREWSBURY (Salop)
Is this correct?

Dead right on both counts.
Note also the corrosion blurs in the letter squares and absence of the 8 o'clock ray in the NW star.
