New Davo Self Adhesive "EASY" Stamp Mounts - Comments?

Post by Snick1946 »

http://www.stanleygibbons.com/stanleygibbons/view/category/sgproductcatalog/7881/7980

SG is now selling self sticking Davo mounts- has anyone tried these and if so what is your opinion?

My experience with self sticking mounts has been negative on the whole. Usually the adhesive bleeds through the paper.

I can only find these for now on the SG website.

Can anyone can have a view on these yet as they appear to be new to the market?

I got this yesterday as an email pushing them hard;

I'd be very interested as well although they do appear to be twice the price of normal mounts....

The Gibbons site has a special offering five packs for the price of four. They also plan to include samples for their readers with the September issue of GSM.

I have used 'Stampmounts' by White Ace- they have a self adhesive peel able strip across the back. My problem with them is the adhesive bleed through the page- although that may have been corrected in later manufactured mounts. Also the faces of the mounts apparently absorb some of the stickiness of the adhesive, they stick to the facing pages a bit when turning leaves in the album. I like that I can reposition them later or even leave stamps in them and put in another album.

I had a sample earlier this month with one of their incessant mailings.

Stuck them on the back of the list they came with.

They stuck easily and cleanly and seemed firmly affixed.

They were still stuck the following day when I binned the mailshot.

Can't vouch for their long-term durability, though.

It is a worry putting the lovely engraved issue of Greenland in untried mounts.

I seem to remember some of the first self adhesive mounts that were called Trupol or something like that.
I have many NZ stamps that were ruined by these. I will post some examples later.

Mike Hill of Bexley Stanmps (an agent for Davo) demonstrated these at Campbelltown District Philatelic last month.

They did everything he claimed, however the long term adhesive issues of "leaking" will only be proved years into the future.

Mike was discounting his stock of ordinary mount packs.

The technology in adhesives if a well advanced field and I feel sure these are what they say there are, and what they do.

Seems the main issue is cost - if they are higher cost than normal mounts most will not bother. If price comes down to around normal levels I imagine they'll sell far better.

These items, which are on ePay at the moment are examples of the 'Trupol' mounts.

I remember reading in old CP newsletters that these mounts were the new wonder item. In fact I have seen many sets of KG6 coils like these and have bought a collection of KG6 blocks etc which have at least a good bottom pair in the bottom block of 4.

I have experimented by soaking them for prolonged periods in various solvents for months. 6 months in white spirit had no effect.

what a shame ……

I know that things have improved since then. The best of technology at the time may not be the best in the future.

If anyone has a known, sure solution, for the Trupol let me know.

Davo is a trusted company and well respected. So I would trust their new mounts.
I've been waiting for someone to do it right. Now if the price would just come down bit.

(Although I have no trouble at all with using normal lick and stick hingeless mounts - following the instructions usually helps!)

As for those examples above, how did the "glue/gum" on the back ever "bleed" through a plastic mount to damage the stamp?

Mike Hill, Australian DAVO agent, and am pleased to see that these new self-adhesive mounts have been a great success, even so early in the piece.

I am pleased to say that we have quite a few sizes to date in stock, and getting DAVO to supply is the issue, as demand globally seems huge. I think this has caught them a little by surprise.

At a special introductory price I am running $A99 for 10 packets of your choice of sizes - a 30% discount off normal retail. More stock is due to arrive very soon from Holland.

Our retail price is around the same as buying from SG.

There are 40 different pack sizes, in both black and clear types. All cost the same - you simply get more mounts in the small 20mm size that the large A4 size that we also carry!

When you respond, make sure you mention 'Stampboards' to get this discount. :)

Were the Turpol mounts actually mount or were they self adhesive hinges? I was sent a large collection on approval last year where someone used the self stick hinges- every stamp was ruined.

You couldn't peel them off or remove them without taking the paper with the hinge. I get very leery at anything self adhesive, for good reason.

Davo has a good reputation and I have to think they have covered their bases on this prior to going into sale of them. Looking forward to feedback from users.

No offence to the company but I won't be using their new mounts. I use hinges to attach the normal mounts to my pages - that way I can move them around if I need to rearrange things.

I have never used them but I believe they were a self adhesive hinge. I have only seen the end result. I bet at the time they were great - but were not permanent - or perhaps they were too permanent.

The adverts I had seen suggested that they were God's gift to collectors

I don't doubt Davo would be covering their bases.

Wonder how you test if permanent?

Just imagine the lawsuits.

A self adhesive hinge is not the same as a self adhesive mount. With the hinge, the adhesive is in direct contact with the stamp. With the mount it has a sheet of plastic between.

Personally, I haven't even got used to self adhesive stamps yet.
Where do the years go? I went from philandering to philately and didn't even notice.

Just had a look at Davo web site. They have also an instruction film how to install them: http://www.davo.nl/en/home/easy-en.html.

For me it would make things a bit easier, as I am always using the wrong amount of water somehow. The big question is probably what the effect of the glue will be through the back of the mount on any stamp. And my guess is that they will use it for all their new albums in future, as this makes the production of the albums much easier.
Kind regards,

Actually I wonder sometimes how the makers of what passes for 'hinges' these days avoid lawsuits. There are still brands advertising their products as 'peelable' that in fact hold like iron and cannot be removed without damage to the stamp or thinning the page.

At some point last year I bought a pack of what were supposed to be 'vintage' hinges on Ebay- they turned out when I finally got to using them to be the modern knockoffs. By the time I caught things several stamps had been ruined.

The qualm I would have with them is the same as the self-adhesive corner mounts for covers (they're convenient, but I keep a stock of the old type for expensive items) -- the adhesive is such that you need to be VERY careful with them.

A slip of the fingers that brings the adhesive into contact with the cover can cause serious damage as compared to the old lick-and-stick version -- it's like the difficulty of removing a self-adhesive stamp from paper as compared to a lickable one. And covers are fairly robust -- a loose stamp would probably be completely ruined. So keep the stamps well away until all the mounts are on the page!

The best mounts I have used!!

Size 30 is perfect for Australia Roos and KGV heads, and most horizontal commems.

SG now using them in their Windsor Albums.

See Bexley Stamps for supply - got mine from him.

A One, when you say size 30, do you mean the 30mm high mounts? That sounds a little short as I use 32-33mm high.

So in theory you get 8 mounts (215/27mm) per cut strip x25 = 200 mounts in a pack [at] 5c ea. Which seems a very fair introductory price.

Would assume they were 30 mm high mounts. Most modern horizontal commemoratives are 26 mm high, so adding the usual 2 mm border gives you 30 mm.

Yes, but an Aussie KGV is 29mm high so no margin left for a border around the stamp. Aren't Roos even taller?

Mounts normally are sized to match the stamp you intend to use - so a size 30 should be used for a 30mm high stamp. But the SG website does not give an indication of this they seem to be saying what actual size the mount is ie/ 30mm.

When in doubt read the dealer website!

Image

Mounts drive me insane, and I do not stock them separately for that reason, as MOST collectors do not read of curse, and order wrong sizes, wasting hours over a $10 pack responding, and sending correct size back etc.

I just sell the 500 gram bags, and let collectors work out from that vast mass what suits THEM best.

I've been advised some sizes are in stock (clear - sizes 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 35, 36, 41, 43, 56), some should be arriving late next week (clear - sizes 32, 33, 34, 37, 40, 44, 46, 50, 92, and 135), and all other sizes should have left leaving Holland for Australia yesterday.

I didn't ask about the stock of black backed mounts.

Mike indicated that it is a challenge as a dealer to transfer from one mounting system to another (because you still need to retain the old type for collectors), and also that he has extensively tested the mounts on a variety of paper types with no issues.

I tried them out tonight and the glue is not tenacious at all, indeed it is far less ‘tacky’ than I imagined, and I found I could move them around quite easily, and not tear holes in pages as occurs with normal mounts.

There is only a glue strip on about a third of the mount, so adhesion area is pretty small really.

I use only the "SUPER STICKY" PostIt notes here (by the 100s!) as the others simply fall off in my view, given a few years.

I'd say the 'tackiness' of these "EASY" Davo mounts is around the same as those, and width of the tacky strip a little less wide.

Indeed I was rather surprised at how NON permanent feeling the "stickiness" appeared to be.

There is a free sample of these mounts on the cover of this month's (September 2014) Gibbons Stamp Monthly.

It is a pack of 6 pre-cut mounts of varying sizes - 3 clear and 3 with a black back.

I've always found the best combination to be normal (Lighthouse) mounts with a drop or two of Henzo photographic glue.

The bond is good and the mounts can be easily lifted later on without damaging either the paper or mount if they need to be repositioned or moved. One 100ml tube of glue ($10) lasts a very long time indeed.

Will try Stampex.

Actually if this had happened with a couple other dealers I know of (the place being filled with, you know..) I'd be asking 'what's new?'

I looked for these on the SG website but there is no logic in their listing. The mounts are not ranked in ascending order of size but apparently at random.

So, if you want 48mm black you have to scroll through for five minutes to find them. I then went to a specialised accessory supplier who pointed out that the Davo sizes refer to the size of mount (not the size of stamp that can go in it).

Therefore one needs to subtract 4mm for comparability with other mounts. I realise this point has already been raised in the forum, but it bears repeating.

Re: New Davo Self Adhesive "EASY" Stamp Mounts - Comments?

So, if you want 48mm black you have to scroll through for five minutes to find them. I then went to a specialised accessory supplier who pointed out that the Davo sizes refer to the size of mount (not the size of stamp that can go in it).

Therefore one needs to subtract 4mm for comparability with other mounts. I realise this point has already been raised in the forum, but it bears repeating.

I got a Fall sale catalogue from SG yesterday. The mounts are listed but there is utterly nothing about the sizing issue. A lot of these are going to be sold to people unaware of the sizing issue.

As for the jumbled up listing on their site- everything is that way. I try to narrow down a search as much as I can and still get several hundred results each time in random order.

I usually either phone or email for availability on anything specific.

They are aware of the problem and have been for years- and apparently can't/won't correct it.

Post it note tacky or a bit stronger? Being able to reposition is an added bonus.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who uses these supposedly short term reminders for decades. :D Some of mine are now taped to various surfaces. :D
With kind regards, Jim

I put in a repeat order last Friday - yet to arrive - but believe the ten packets for $99 is still valid.

For those in the US interested, these are now available through Palo USA:

https://paloalbums.com/accessories/stamp-collecting/stamp-mounts

They sell just a few sizes with the idea that users may trim them down.

So have these mounts flourished or died a death?

I am using them successfully. No reason to believe that there are any issues with them at all. Everything claimed by Davo in respect of this produce seems to be correct based on my experience.

I have been using these for over a year now and have stopped using Prinzgard. On the very rare occasions I needed to re-lay a stamp album page the mounts could be moved without leaving marks.

Combined with the use of Dennison stamp hinges for when I do not need the Davo product, my life has become simpler.

I have also read that dealers hate valuing collections in Gard mounts as it is much more time-consuming and can result in lower valuations.

Not sure if I will migrate my whole collection before I am called to higher things but I have made a start.

Reason: Added pars and spacing and "air" to UNJAM it all - always a great idea on all posts on Bulletin Boards!
