Congratulations Walter! That was fast sleuthing!

I very nearly selected the large star near the base of the shield as my clue, but thought that would be too tricky!

Again too easy for you. So how can you guess it so quickly if only two red dots are shown? Maybe I should have shown
only one dot.

I am amazed how quickly Walter manages to find these things! I wondered if he did it by reading my file-names, so started saving my guesses as "Mystery-stamp-Jan21.jpg" or similar names, but he still managed to crack the mysteries quickly!

So it must be an encyclopedic knowledge of stamps!

Seems like 4 questions in 30 minutes by the same participant is the new norm?

Unless you revoke the "fair play gentlemen's agreement" and invoke a rule that "no participant may ask two consecutive questions" then the thread will probably remain of little interest to newcomers.

Does not actually stating the answer exonerate the behaviour?

Despite the above, I admire the skill shown in ascertaining the answer so promptly.

My sentiments have now been echoed by satsuma.

I have several times recently posted in favour of turn-taking here, and waiting
for the last question to be answered before the next one is posed. The way it
has been played recently has effectively discouraged or excluded other participants.
Even Walter's announcement that he has guessed the latest challenge but will leave
it for others to solve really comes too late — closing the stable door after the horse
has bolted... I'm sorry it has gone this way.

Hmmm, continuing the conversation, I consider that "10 wins" is too demanding, as I think you really
mean that the same person solves ten different challenges from the same proposer. That requires
the proposer to have solved (at least) ten different challenges to be entitled to propose ten new
challenges. How long would it take for that to happen?

If we estimate that a challenge runs for a week on average until it's solved, then a particular proposer
cannot run more than two challenges in about a month, and so no more than six challenges in around
three months. Isn't it unlikely that all six will be solved by the same "winner"?

Suppose we have the rule/guideline: A proposer may wait up to three months before mailing stamp
prizes to a successful solver, and should send a private e-mail to notify the solver when the stamp
prize(s) have been mailed. As usual, recipients of stamp prize(s) should add a post to the thread to
acknowledge arrival of their prize(s).

If acceptable to participants on this thread, this guideline would allow for the possibility that a solver
wins more than one prize from a given proposer, allowing the proposer to combine the prizes into a
single mailing, but does not fix a prerequisite number of prizes for mailing to occur. Rather, it
sets a reasonable timeframe to allow one winner to win more than one challenge from the same
proposer.

Comments? It would be good if the initiator of this thread, joelk, tells us what he thinks about it. ;)

/RogerE :D
Your timeframe idea sounds very good. My "10 wins" suggestion was based on an idea to make things
as easy as possible for a random user who only wants to play the game without any interest in
receiving/sending the prize stamps. I might take a year to complete 10 wins depending on
how many users are actively participating. During so long period of time, many random users would never
need to receive/send the prize stamps if they lost their interest in the game and left. Already many users have left the game, so how many such users exist who knows, and how to bring them back.

If we don't want to fix a prerequisite number of prizes for mailing to occur, and select your timeframe idea, then it is up to the solver and proposer to negotiate what happens to the stamps if the solver does not want to receive his prize. Maybe that issue does not need to taken into account in the rule/guideline.
Also a three months period of waiting time sounds suitable to allow for the possibility that a solver
wins more than one prize from a given proposer.

Roger,

I understand the concept, but also feel that there would not be that many opportunities to combine as you are correctly illustrating in your example. In addition, part of the game is for people to receive covers from their Stampboards friends.

I'd prefer not to change the rules, as two Stampboards members can always agree between themselves to let the 'proposer' combine stamps in case of multiple wins by the same guesser. No need for an explicit rule I feel.

Cheers,
Joel.

RogerE and satsuma, I think we are in a democratic and healthy environment. As Joel pointed out there should be no specific rules, quick responses and mental alertness are part of the game and belong to any of us.

I would like the opinion of the other most frequent players whether or not we should keep our game, or better, Joel's game. ;)

It's interesting how people misinterpret other's comments.

Joelk was clearly stating a preference to not create a new rule regarding the distribution of prizes - not about the playing of the game.

Also if he is the authority on the game perhaps you could explain why this aspect, which is part of the original post is being ignored.

'To play, we use one stamp, which can be part of a set or was issued alone. The important thing here is not value, but that the stamp is known to collectors, and that it preferably has an interesting story, so that the poster can explain it.'

There seems to be a distinct lack of explanations lately.

My point was that if you want to attract more players, then you need to consider how to achieve that. On an international board you might like to consider how best to cater to participants from differing time zones.
If you are quite content to be a gang of four, close your minds to alternate scenarios.

I think that the main problem is: when the country and the year of issuing are known, it is usually very easy
and quick to find the challenge stamp. At that moment all the participants should be online at the same time,
in order to have equal chance of winning. I think it is impossible to guarantee equal chances to everybody.
This is only a game, we should not take it too seriously.

Good news for Panterra. After some waiting time, I finally received the promised prize to reward Panterra
for correctly guessing my Kingsford Smith challenge stamp. Today I have mailed the prize to Panterra, franked with some very nice Australian International postage stamps and excellent cancels. Bruce, your patience will eventually be rewarded :D

No, no, yes! You made me sound like Jim Trott in The Vicar of Dibley.

The common theme between this and the previous Haitian challenge stamp is
"Anniversaries of first flights across seas/oceans".
(The fact that the overprint/surcharge was the "main feature" of the Haitian
stamp rendered it a commemorative of Lindbergh's trans-Atlantic flight.)
I think that if you had managed to narrow down the theme earlier, rather
than year of issue or even country of issue, you would have found the stamp
design fairly quickly, and finally needed to decide whether my example
was the Australian or the New Zealand version of the commemorative...

Image
.
There is a New Zealand commemorative of the same design,
issued in the same year
.
The first image I showed was the dot under d of 8d. All the later images were of the
bright reflection on the water below the plane's wheels.

Panterra, your prize will be a matched pair of flown covers Aust/NZ and NZ/Aust franked
by the Australian stamp and the New Zealand stamp, respectively.

Thank you Roger.

I recall when I was a junior collector many years ago, that Kingsford Smith stamp was regarded as an impressive specimen among my circle of collectors. But only the NZ edition: we didn't know about the Australian version till much later, despite Australia being probably the largest supplier of overseas stamps to this island!
