Cover Race Discussion, Rules & Call for Race Entrants

Post by TheRoyalCounty »

This thread is for general race questions, chit-chat, race rules and guidelines and calls for entrants for next races.

Specific race related comments should still be added in the relevant race thread.

RACE RULES & GUIDELINES; UPDATE 30 JANUARY 2016

Race Rules
(i) Each race is open to six (6) entrants from six (6) different countries.
(ii)On a predetermined and exact date each participant mails a cover with international rate stamp(s) to the next person in the race following the race route.
(iii) On receipt of the cover, the recipient will add international rate stamp(s) and mail it on to the next recipient.
(iv) Covers damaged in transit shall be repaired where possible and continue onwards, if a cover is too damaged to continue it's race is over.
(v) The winner will be the first person to receive their own cover back and posts a scan of the cover here.
(vi) Cover and postcard races are open to all members who have made a minimum of 90 posts and a Stampboards member for 90 days or more.

Guidelines
(a) Each participant undertakes a commitment to post onward covers within two business day of receipt.
(b) At race start and on receipt of a cover a scan is to be posted in this thread.
(c) Each participant agrees to get each cover hand cancelled at their local PO when posting their cover and each onward cover.
(d) Each participant agrees to write the recipients address and senders address in pencil to enable it to be erased and a new one added each leg. Ink shall be used on the final leg back to the originator unless otherwise specified.
(e) Standard 'DL' size or international standard equivalent envelopes should be used with a lightweight card stiffener inserted.
(f) Stamps should be placed with care leaving a gap (~5mm) between it and the envelope edges and should not overlap other stamps.
(g) Airmail labels/etiquettes should be placed on the rear of the envelope only except those of the originating country.
(h) To aid identification during multiple races each cover should be marked on the rear in ink with a cover number in the form X/Y where X is race number and Y route position (your position in the race route) - see the race route above for your cover number.
(i) Racers may, at their discretion, mark their own cover only with 'Philatelic Cover' or similar.

See the forum rules here

Add your name below to join upcoming races.

This is also a call for Race 3 and Race 4 entrants.
If you wish to participate; post a message below BUT before you do, make sure you are able to comply with the rules and guidelines - we've encountered problems in Races 1 & 2 where entrants cannot get hand cancellations or have sufficient stamps ....

Entrants received so far:

Hutch (Australia)
fromdownunder (Australia)
AMark (Canada)
CanadaStamper (Canada)
MarkBodiella (UK)
TheRoyalCounty (Ireland)

Don't worry if your country is already represented or the lists seems oversubscribed, we'll attempt to run simultaneous races or those starting soon after to accommodate everyone.

Hi,

If you don't mind another Canadian, I would like to take part in one or more races.

The staff at my local postal outlet will handstamp a letter if asked.

Best wishes,

Two from the same country...hmmm I had the same thought but discounted the idea given the number of countries represented on Stampboards...surely we can get 6 different for each race?!
TheRoyalCounty,

Well, that's what I thought when Race 2 was just about to start. But apparently members don't want a long-term commitment, even when they are getting something out of it. (Wow, isn't that just life.)

Anyway, if you don't have six different countries represented that might be something to consider.

TheRoyalCounty, thanks for including me.

I am picking up all of my stamps tomorrow so I will be ready! :D

Have you any idea when Race 3 might start?

I have to be in Melbourne for Dr. appts. around the 22nd Oct. for a few days.

If it is going to be around that time I shall give my Post Master the heads up on what to do. He can be very obliging and will probably get a kick out of the whole thing! :D

I would have the envelope all ready for him...would just need cancelling and posted on the right day!!

AMark suggested we have two (or more) entrants from the same country; we could go with this but I think the race and indeed the covers would lose something as a result.
However that's my opinion only so I throw it open to the group....

Race 3 could start within a few days with the following line-up and race-route:

Hutch (Australia)
AMark (Canada)
MarkBodiella (UK)
CanadaStamper (Canada)
fromdownunder (Australia)
agondocz (Canada)

...→ Hutch → AMark → MarkBodiella → CanadaStamper → fromdownunder → agondocz →...

If you all agree we can start the race Wednesday 15 October.

Alternatively we wait a few more days and see if anyone else signs up.

Personally, I would much prefer a wider range of countries. 3 Canada and 2 Australia on the one cover would make them pretty lopsided.

I will be ready for Wednesday but I do agree with Norm. We need more countries!

With that thought in mind, I shall go and email a few other SB'rs to see if they are interested!

I for one, had no idea about Race 1 and only stumbled upon Race 2 nearly half way through! So there are definitely ones out there that could be interested but just don't know!

Nice to see that there will be more races.

I think you should also note in the rules that a race could take over 60 days to complete.

I definitely thinks that there should be no duplicate countries in one race.

What a about a underpaid cover race?

In this race only one stamp (with currently domestic rate) may be used.

Hand canceling could be a problem in some countries. (I’ll think I can manage them hand canceled in the Netherlands.)

But that’s a small side effect, not all stamps are handcanceld in race one and two.. If they won’t handcancel it, just put them in the mailbox en let’s see what happen.

It would surely be interesting to see if covers will make it all the way. Perhaps we also get some interesting markings on the cover as well.

We should perhaps also leave the airmail label out?

So I’m in for this underpaid variant.

That would be an interesting variant JKA! I would be in on that!

I think first though, we need more members from other countries participating in our normal race!

Guys,

Please don't get me wrong, I would also prefer to have six different countries participating. When we have three form Canada and two from Australia we might as well just exchange covers.

I think we should wait and see if other members want to join.

JKA,

I have actually mentioned this idea of an Underpaid Cover Race to TheRoyalCounty before the start of Cover Race 2. I didn't proceed with it because I didn't want to take participants away from Cover Race 2.

But since you are interested, I might start or resurrect the Underpaid Mail Experiment. :)

If there is room for me, I'd like to join. I've read the rules. Only the handstamped rule could be a problem. If this rule is highly desired but optional, I'm in.

Oke, then we had the same idea. I thought about it when my cover came home from the first race. So perhaps race 3 could be a normal one and race 4 an underpaid variant?

It's not optional...
The problem is that if we relax the rule and 4 or 5 entrants don't/can't get hand cancels we may as well stick a bunch of mint WW stamps on a cover ourselves.

It's worth checking with your local Postmaster, our last US racer managed to convince his local PO to cancel.

A spot is reserved for you in the meantime :)

Stuart,

I'm happy to sit out Race 3 and give someone else the Canada slot, as I've signed up for the Underpaid Cover Race. I agree it would be better to have only one entrant per country per race. It makes for a nicer cover at the end. There should hopefully be no issues finding enough members to participate!

Hi all, I spent a lovely hour in the Echuca PO today with one of their staff to find stamps for the next Race....much to the disgust of all the people waiting behind me!...the PO had to find more staff to attend to them!

Australia Post has yet to issue a new $2.75 International commemmorative stamp except for the one Norm used on his letter for Race 2.

Will there be a problem with this? Or should I make up a rate with a couple of stamps? I am thinking of space available here! I bought a gutter strip of 10 of these ones just in case it's OK!!

They are lovely stamps by the way!

Sometimes sequels work, and trilogies fail. Superman 3 anyone? And anything after Highlander, and dare I say Batman and Robin?

And yet... with all our members, I simply cannot believe we cannot get six people in different countries who can get real stamps and real CDS's, and like stamps enough that they will commit to visit a Post Office 6 times in 6 weeks to finish up with a great worldwide cover with a hand cancelled stamp from 6 different countries?.

Can any Indian members comment? Is it true that India will not allow mail that already has a stamp from another country on it to be forwarded elsewhere with an appropriate Indian stamp?

And calling Europe!!!

I am not even a cover collector, but this will only ever be taken from my cold dead hands. Yes it is contrived, but getting it back was so much fun (the second cover below) for so little money.

I only got my invitation today, but will do it. I barely check my gmail though sorry. I should as my main yahoo message gets more spam than gmail.

I have to warn you though, our country is notorious for poor cancelling and STRONGLY encouraging people not to use stamps on overseas mail, preferring labels.

Also stamps may be different to use on my covers, due to different rates here.
Airmail to Australia and some Pacific Islands is $2
Rest of world $2.50

I will aim to use modern commems, now its an endangered bird (Released September 3rd), Xmas stamp (Yukky kids face with an doo rag) but after November 4th, I aim to use the Hobbit stamps released that date. I will try (But are not promising!) to get middle earth cancels at the Auckland downtown GPO for the covers.

Ok Hutch, you talked me into it, so pencil me in for Cover Race 5..not 4, I wouldn't dare turn up to my friendly Post Office lady and ask here to postmark an insufficiently funded envelope. I must go to the PO tomorrow to send some machins off to Canada so I can buy the stamps and envelopes at the same time so I'm ready for the big day.

I still haven't worked out the envelope size. The ones scanned up the page seem to be small.

Just use an envelope that you would normally use for sending a folded A4 sheet size letter - here we casll them size DL (an A4 page size letter is folded in three to fit).

I'll check now and see if we have enough entrants for two races - I normally give 3 days (or so) notice but would you both be able to start late this week?

First, thank you to Norm for his reality check. Sometimes we stamp enthusiasts get a bit carried away...

Second, just confirming Stuart that I will sit out the next couple of races to let other members from Canada join in the fun. Thanks for organizing these! :D

Yesterday was a Federal holiday so POs were closed. I'll check today, but in my experience hand cancels are not guaranteed, machine cancels are the preferred practice of busy clerks. I can try. There are several post offices in this large Sonoran desert city and a variety of postal workers. Having moved here earlier this year, I've not yet met them all nor acquired a promise of consistent hand cancels when requested. That's the bare truth. Also true is I can try. So I will leave it to you whether to include me or not.

Thanks Jean - I can't agree more with your sentiments re: the underpaid cover race; I'm a little annoyed for not realising myself without being told.

Thanks also for stepping out the next races....I'll await replies from Princestamps & Mazski and if both are good to go Race 3 and possibly Race 4 can start....

Thanks for responding ConnieB - I'm in two minds; I hate excluding anyone but do want the final covers to reflect their journey through six postal services. I'll pencil you in for Race 4 unless you come back with a definitive NO not possible following your ongoing checks. :D

Sometimes a fresh perspective is needed from someone that is not directly involved. Re: Underpaid cover race. Since we get caught up in things and tend not to think everything through.

Thanks Norm.

TheRoyalCounty,

I took part in Race 1 and agondocz (Canada) has expressed his interest in Race 3. I can sit this out and let him have a turn.

Cheers!

If you're still planning on doing two races I would be happy to be the second UK participant - I read through the thread and didn't spot another sign up from these shores, but apologies if I missed someone.

I have a 100% success rate on getting hand cancels so far, but do sometimes get interrogated in the process - but that shouldn't be a problem!

Seems there's nobody in Asia involved, so I'll join if it's still open. I have postal clerks wrapped around my finger by now, I can get almost anything at the PO.

I can start Friday or any part of next week. Bear in Mind Monday October 27th is a public holiday here though (Our Labour Day) so any cover that arrives on Sat 25th, will have to wait until Tuesday Oct 28th to be reposted.

We have no more public holidays here until Xmas after that though.

I will try and get hand cancels, but our local PO is full of civil servant types and little old Indian and Islander ladies who love slapping labels on everything and will question every thing I want like its a criminal motive.

This is a Postal adminsitration that bans the sending of collectable supermarket toys, stamps and coins.

If I have real problems I will go downtown to the Bureau. Something which will be tied in with visits to our PO BOX.

Thanks ajsadeh and aethelwulf

Princestamps; don't worry about public holidays - we all get them!! The race rules/guidelines state:
(a) Each participant undertakes a commitment to post onward covers within one business day of receipt.

To summarise the list of entrants:

Hutch (Australia)
AMark (Canada)
MarkBodiella (UK)
CanadaStamper (Canada)
fromdownunder (Australia)
agondocz (Canada)
TheRoyalCounty (Ireland)
ConnieB (US)
Princestamps (NZ)
maszki (Poland)
ajsadeh (UK)
aethelwulf (Hong Kong)

So....

Race 3 entrants and routing:
...→ Hutch → agondocz → ajsadeh → maszki → aethelwulf → Princestamps →...

Race start Friday 17 October.

I'll start a new thread in the morning specifically for this race.

Race 4 needs one more entrant from countries not listed above.

Stuart - your race course is almost linear  - wouldn't it be more fun to zigzag the covers a bit? Cover a bit more ground?? 8)

Well there is a bit of a loop with the route - Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia and Canada. New Zealand is further east than Australia, so the cover goes East from Hong Kong to New Zealand, but then westwards back to Australia and far eastwards out to Canada.

I will start my cover at the Downtown PO on Friday which will have a nice hand cancel. I will have them posted to my home address. Put nice cardboard in them, as it rains a lot in Auckland and the Postman does not always do a complete job here.

Stuart, who do you want me to send my address to, Aethelwulf or Hutch? Or am I jumping the starters gun here?

Purely in error :D But let's leave it as is....
Princestamps wrote:Stuart, who do you want me to send my address to, Aethelwulf or Hutch? Or am I jumping the starters gun here?
Yes; each racer should send an SB email with their postal address to the person directly behind them in the race route - in your case you send your address to aethelwulf. Hutch will send you her address....
This should be done now before the race begins for obvious reasons :D

Updated race rules and guidelines:

Race Rules
(i) On a predetermined and exact date each participant mails a cover with a international rate stamp(s) to the next person in the race (I'll create the mailing list).
(ii) On receipt of the cover, the recipient will add international rate stamp(s) and mail it on to the next recipient.
(iii) Covers damaged in transit shall be repaired where possible and continue onwards, if a cover is too damaged to continue it's race is over.
(iv) The winner will be the first person to receive their own cover back and posts a scan of the cover here.

Guidelines
(a) Each participant undertakes a commitment to post onward covers within one business day of receipt.
(b) At race start and on receipt of a cover a scan is to be posted in this thread. *UPDATED*
(c) Each participant agrees to get each cover hand cancelled at their local PO when posting their cover and each onward cover.
(d) Each participant agrees to write the recipients address and senders address in pencil to enable it to be erased and a new one added each leg.
(h) To aid identification during multiple races each cover should be marked on the rear in ink with a cover number in the form X/Y where X is race number and Y route position (your position in the race route) *NEW*

My address has been sent to Princestamps!

Afraid I got a little confused to start with!...did the big panic and raced down to the PO and bought some more stamps for the NZ rate today!

Then realised I am supposed to send "covers" to agondocz and my "address" to princestamps!

Oh well, at least I have plenty of stamps to send to the NZ region!

You can never be too short of stamps for your mail!!

And then, there is nothing like a bit of excitement ( and panic!) added in!

I am ready to go!!

One last question....I have put the correct Race/Entry number on the back of the envelope...I take it, we do NOT put our return address on the back though? Is that to make sure it does continue forward?

Hutch

You need to add your return address to each cover in PENCIL on the back as per guideline (d) - it can then be erased and a new one added as it reaches the next recipient.
