I noticed one thing.
Almost every month we have here in Postcard Exchange
all the same/ constant participators (more or less).
(I am usually 'out' in December, Yanuary, February, July and August.)

What would you people say about next rule:

- This rule would only apply in the month when there are 6 or less participators.
- AMark (or participators) may decide to make exchange pairs
or all participators exchange ONE single postcard to each other.
- So insead to sent/ receive for example 3 postcards to/ from one exchange partner,
you sent 5 postcards to different addresses and receive 5 postcards from different countries
.

I would like to hear/ read your opinion/s.
Thank you. :D

Good suggestion.

However, I don't know if the other participants would want to swap five postcards. The norm is two or three per exchange.

Anyway, let us see how the other participants feel about swapping postcards with five members simultaneously.

GreenGO wrote:Hello Amark,

this idea is only as an option where we have 6 participators or less.
(it is just a suggestion, it doesn't have to be accepted, if turns out to be unwelcome)

1.
If there are 6 participators you may decide (or paticipators vote for):
- to make pairs,
- or to apply 'ONE single' postcard rule.
(in this case there are going to be max. 5 postcards to sent - receive /per paticipator)

2.
If there are only 5 or less participators it is more likey
or even easier to go with 'ONE single' postcard rule.

3.
The 'ONE-single' postcard rule
(hereinafter referred to as: the basic rule)
would mean:

''If I am going to sent a postcard to person (A, B, C, D, E),
then I have to receive a postcard from person (A, B, C, D, E).''

4.
In case where we have two or more participators from the same country
(India, for example) this sub-rule may apply.

''If I did NOT sent a postcard to a person (B, India),
then there is NOT going to be a postcard from a person (B, India) for me.''

So, two or more participators from the same country may discuss
(in private message) which are going to use: basic rule or sub-rule.

participators A, B, and C are from same country (India)
participator D is from Germany,
participator E is from U.K.,
participator F is from Canada.

Participator A follow the basic rule with paricipator: B, C, D, E, F

Participator B follow the basic rule with participator: A, D, E, F
Participator B agree with participator C to follow the sub-rule.

Participator C follow the basic rule with participator: A, D, E, F
Participator C agree with participator B to follow the sub-rule.

Participators: D, E, F follow the basic rule with each other!

5a.
How this should work.

Paticipator A and B agree to follow the basic rule,
and exchange a postcard with one-to-another (between A and B).

Participator B and C agree to follow the sub-rule,
and do NOT exchange a postcard with one-to-another (between B and C)

Participator C and A agree to follow the basic rule,
and exchange a postcard with one-to-another (between C and A).
But participators C and B agree to follow the sub-rule,
and do NOT exchange a postcard with one-to-another (between C and B)

5b.
which follows:

participator A exchange a postcard with: B, C, D, E, F
participator B exchange a postcard with: A, D, E, F, (but NOT with C)
participator C exchange a postcard with: A, D, E, F, (but NOT with B)

patricipator D exchange a postcard with: A, B, C, E, F
participator E exchange a postcard with: A, B, C, D, F
participator F exchange a postcard with: A, B, C, D, E

I agree with you that in this case it would take a little more effort and time to be spend.

But please hear/read my argument/s:

- it would be easier for AMark to process the Postcard Exchange.
- this option may only be available when there are 6 or less participators.
- it would mean one visit to P.O. to mail max. 5 postcards to different addresses.
- which follows 5 postcards from different members in one month.
(to be honest, not so good thing is, that you may get same postcards and stamps
from members who live in same country, India for example)
- since we have (more or less) all the same constant participators here,
you will have all their addresses and e-mail/s sooner or later. (If you do not have those already)

It is not my intention to spoil this Postcard Exchange tradition.
I see this as an adjustment to already well-established practice.

You know,
I would like to see more participators in this Postcard Exchanges and a wide variety of countries.

Yes, some participants could get two or three postcards from member that live in the same country. Furthermore, there is a possibility that those members that live in the same country could get one postcard less than the other participants.

I have an idea that I needed to check with Mark first, as it would mean more work for him. But I got a green light from him to write about it here. :)

I like the idea of getting postcards from a couple of different countries every month like GreenGo suggested, but I also feel like Hutch that sending away five postcards a month would be a bit more expensive than it's worth with the cost for postage and the postcards itself.

My idea is to do a bit like the popular Secret Santa, but with not so secret postcard exchangers instead.

As before everyone interested in the exchange write their name in the montly thread, but we also write the amount of postcards we would like to exchange.

For example:
Henrik_rrb 3
Hutch 2
Girish Vaidya 4
GreenGo 5
Philexx 2
AMark 1
PdotK 2

Then the draw is made, and I get three different persons that I'll send one postcard each to. They will at the same time send one each to me. GreenGo will have the same with five people, Hutch with two, Girish with four and so on.

This way we would all get to send away the amount of postcards we want, and would get the same amount back from different parts of the world.

This way we would neither need to use this system only when we are six participants or less, and AMark wouldn't need to risk being without a exchange partner every now and then either.

I do realise though that this doesn't solve the problem when persons from the same country joins the exchange. Maybe it's not a huge problem if one at the same time gets a few postcards from other countries, or it could perhaps be arranged so that people from the same country can't be drawn together.

This then means even more work for AMark... (Mark, I would be very happy to take over the exchange draw every second month or so so that you wouldn't have to do all the work yourself!).

Thoughts about this?

Hi all,
My concern here is for theme swaps. At the moment with one exchange partner I can concerntrate on finding three postcards that fit their themes and hopefully they can find me some modern architecture. It could be much harder with several exchange partners each month.
I do like the current method although I appreciate that there are not that many of us.

Currently the exchange is not attracting many participates, for obvious reasons. Sometimes improving something that is not broken can in fact break it. However, the exchange is there for you guys to enjoy and I am just tagging along for the ride. That said, you guys can decide if you want something different or leave it as it is.

Here are the proposed ideas:

An exchange of 5 or less postcards, all to different participants.

An exchange that is similar to the Secret Santa Gift exchange, except it will not be secret.

Leave the exchange as is.

My major concern with an exchange of 5 postcards is that if a participant swaps 5 postcards in one month, what motivation will he or she have to return the next month?

I agree with you Mark about the 5 postcards. I'm also a big fan of "if it's not broken, don't fix it".

Are the obvious reasons that people just don't collect postcards? Because the cover exchange thread always does very well. Is this change about attracting more people or making it more fun for the small selection of participants?

I wouldn't say that people don't collect postcards, but that there is a lot less postcards collectors as compared to cover collectors.

The other reason is the cost. A postcard is more expensive than an envelope.

Furthermore, sometimes it's a challenge to find themed postcards. I don't see this often but I get requests for a specific theme which I can't get.

Last, speaking from personal experience, it is becoming difficult to get postcards locally.
Dannick wrote:Is this change about attracting more people or making it more fun for the small selection of participants?
I think that the initial proposal by GreenGo was to make the exchange more attractive to the small number of participants.

I would like to see a few more members join the exchange. We do get a spike in participation once every couple of months, which makes the exchange more interesting. I guess the question becomes, if most of you guys are ok with this small group do you want to change the format?

I would have been happy to try the "secret santa" system, it would make it possible to get more postcards from different countries every month, but I'm equally happy to continue as it is. It would definitely have been nice with a few more members joining, but I'm not sure how to get more people interested in the exchange.

Re: Monthly Postcard Exchange Discussion Thread

Post by AMark »

It has been brought to my attention that some members are not getting enough variety in the number of countries that they are sending to and receiving postcards from.

My objective for the monthly exchange list is to give the participants, variety in members that they exchange with and variety in the countries that they receive postcards from. However, when one country dominates the exchange for a few months, it’s difficult to assign exchange partners from different countries every month.

As you guys already know, part of the difficulty comes from the small number of participants in the postcard exchange. At the moment, not a single member has signed up for the June exchange.

In the past, to increase participant numbers, I have reminded members about the exchange and advertised the exchange on the cover exchange thread. But that only increased participation by one or two members. I could do that once again, but swapping postcards is not as popular as exchanging covers.

Anyway, one possible solution is to have exchanges between members from the same country.

What do you guys think?

Also, if you guys have any other comments or ideas please post them here.

Please remember that the exchange is for you guys. If we don’t make it work, it will disappear.

Yikes! A little concerned I'm the first to post a response.

One country has indeed dominated the postcard exchange, but I would like to add folks from that nation are very responsive in listening to requests for specific postcard and stamp themes and that helps to mix things up a bit with some variety.

It might help if we are all clearer on what themes we would like to receive. My preferences are in the signature at the bottom of every post I make, for instance, but I still regularly get questions about what I would like.

Not sure I offered a solution to getting a lot of postcards from one country, but the effort you make each month to coordinate it is very much appreciated.

Long live the postcard exchange!

hi AMark

I have been on postcard exchange since I joined and have had beautiful cards in exchange. I guess a lot of members from India sign in because the cost is less.

I try to use different stamps each time, and with the number of releases of India it is easy :D :D

I am ok to exchange with members of India also, if ok with you.

There is definitely a need for more members from more countries to join in!!

I aim to collect one MNH postage stamp (1947 -2017)and one used postage stamp(1947 to 1997) each of the post independent India issues. Other that that, I collect world wide postage stamps on the theme of Cinema. I also collect on authors/painters/musicians/composers and anything on entertainment.

Yes I think allowing members from the same country to be drawn would help the situation.

Postcards are great fun and you don't have to consider it a new side-collection which takes work, but do it just for fun. It's nice to get postcards from all over the world and cheers up your day.

So it would be great if more members who are sitting on the sidelines and considering taking part join in :D

Thank you to all that have responded.

I am really happy to see that you guys want to see the postcard exchange going and I am especially happy to see new names signing up for the June exchange. :D

I think that the exchange was heading in a direction where only a few were willing to swap postcards, by few I mean less than five. For the last six exchanges, excluding May, we only had six participants per exchange. I know that participation varies from time to time but this has been the lowest since the beginning.

I will promote the exchange on the cover exchange thread and hopefully we can add a participant or two.

For now, I will not assign members form the same country to swap postcards. The main objective is to increase participant numbers.

Hi

I am new to postcard exchange, but am willing to give it a go! I am about to start work so haven't read through the rules in detail yet, but if someone could answer these questions without wasting too much of your time, I would appreciate it.

I collect postcards but primarily for the stamp. As I only collect Australian, British stamps (non-machins), PNG and specific NZ stamps, am I able to:
1. Exchange with specific countries only?
2. Ask for specific stamps?

The theme of the postcard is not an issue.

Thanks

One other idea that I would be interested in...

It would be great to have a list somewhere of what countries / themes other postcard collectors are interested in. I know I have a shoebox full of postcards I picked up from somewhere, but they are countries I do not collect.
I would be happy to do postcard exchanges of these with ones that I do collect. This might be a great way to find higher value stamps that are sent OS.

Hopefully there are some others out there who would be interested in swapping used postcards?

If this is already done elsewhere on Stampboards, please let me know!

Well, I wish I could say yes but the postcard exchange is not very popular. The only countries that are currently involved in the exchange are: Sweden, Germany, Spain, India, and Canada. I hope that I am not leaving anyone out.

2. Ask for specific stamps?

Yes, participants can and often do ask for specific stamps to be used on postcards.

If you would like to swap used postcards, just start a thread showing what you have and letting others know what you are looking for.

If this is already done elsewhere on Stampboards, please let me know!
