Stamp shops that are still open in the UK

Post by fchd »

.
First off, if this is not the correct sub-forum, mods please feel free to move it!

I thought I'd start a listing of the remaining bricks & mortar stamp shops in the UK, even though they shops themselves are closed during the current English Covid-19 lockdown.

I'm familiar with these three:

Stanley Gibbons, 399 Strand, London
SG Shop London.jpg
The subject of plenty of threads already, the recently refurbished shop is the last one standing on the street that used to have a number of stamp shops

Dauwalders, Fisherton Street, Salisbury
Dauwalders Shop Salisbury.jpg
A large-ish shop in the Wiltshire city that is always worth a visit. Regulars at the larger stamp shows such as Stampex, also with a website at https://www.dauwalders.co.uk/

Taunton Stamp Shop, Bridge Street, Taunton
Taunton Stamp Shop.jpg
A smaller shop, one or two man operation that is occasionally closed when the proprietors are at local fairs etc. (also closed Thursdays). https://www.tauntonstampshop.co.uk/

I'm sure there are others so let's please give them a mention

There is a stamp and collectibles shop, Cofton Collections, In Northfield, Birmingham (the second largest UK city). As far as I’m aware it is the only bricks and mortar stamp shop left in Birmingham, as in many places previously there were many such shops there.

There's the delightfully chaotic Robert Murray's in Edinburgh, which as far as I know is still (normally) open.

That's how stamp shops ought to be. Imagine opening Glen's kitchen and garage (and all the other rooms) as a retail store! Ok, Murray's is a bit more organised, but there is a wealth of material hidden just waiting to be found by the punters. And when I visited there was free on-street parking only minutes away.

Must have been a while ago, Norvic. Parking ain't free anymore! Obviously closed at the moment but have spent many a happy hour flicking through their boxes (if you could find a space anywhere!).

Sadly Robert's shop is now, largely, closed.

Robert Murray Stamp Shop
When I opened my stamp shop in 1977, I certainly didn't think that it would be a virus that would close it down.
I'm sorry to say that Robert Murray Stamp Shop is now largely closed. I will continue to do some business (please read on).
VARIOUS ASPECTS of the Coronavirus situation have forced this decision.
{a} Although ours is one of the biggest stamp shops about, it is very limited in size when in comes to giving people 2m (or even 1m) of space. We'd be very challenged in the number of customers we could have in at any one time.
{b} People sometimes spend long periods in our shop (often hours at one visit). This adds an extra dimension of difficulty to trying to limit numbers and have some kind of queue system.
{c} One of the things customers have loved about our shop is that we have thousands upon thousands of items of stock that they can browse through and touch. That cannot continue at the same time as the shop being kept safe for other customers and staff.
{d} Our public auctions are an important part of our business, and so many aspects of these are now not possible.
{e} Simply, a lot of our shop business involves meeting people at close quarters (and sometimes for longer periods) and touching lots of things.
{f} Although I'm fit and well, that's only because a condition is controlled by medication. And that effects my immune system, and for that reason I'm shielded.
Unfortunately, logic wins, and it makes commercial sense to wind down operations.
THIS IS WHAT WILL STILL HAPPEN;
{1} There will still be auctions, and these will be online.
{2} I'll be able to maintain some mail order business.
{3} Some valuations (such as for estate confirmation or insurance) should still be possible, but subject to special handling arrangements.
{4} It is possible that the shop may be able to open now and again.
{5} I'll still be available for consultation for advice.

The situation is quite fluid, so adjustments will be made as things move along.
My greatest pleasure through forty-three years of running a stamp shop has always been the face-to-face interaction with customers. Some I've met once only, others have been regulars for decades. I've been supported by keen, hardworking, and loyal staff, without whom the business couldn't have operated as it did, and I'd like to thank them all - especially the four front-shop staff that customers would most recently know - Charlie Munro, Christian
McKernan, Evelyn Marshall, and David Donald.
I'm sorry to say that from now on I'll be working largely on my own. The business isn't gone, but it is certainly a new chapter.

The Station Stamp Shop, Coatsworth Road, Gateshead was still open about a year ago - the last time I was able to visit it.

I think this is possibly relevant and sorry, don’t have a photo, but Dacorum Stamp Auctions in Watford is worth a visit.

Obviously only open for auction viewing but some good material amongst the dross. The auctioneer, John, is extremely helpful.

Close to Watford Football Club. Parking is tricky but available within 400 metres if you scout around.

Any locals have a view?
