I for one am happy to see a souvenir sheet for this issue. I love these stamps and think they will be very popular. The souvenir sheet makes it easier to do swaps. :D

Nice stamps.

Dumb question - how does it work with permanent stamps if you want to mail something more than 30g? how do you know what they are worth in conjunction with other stamps?

Easy!

Each Permanent or "P" stamp is worth 92¢. If your domestic letter is more that 30g and up to 50g, the cost will be $1.30. There is a single that covers that domestic rate.

Image

If you want to use two domestic rate singles for over the 30g it will be, 92¢ x 2 which will be $1.84, this is 54¢ over the domestic 30g postage rate.

The International rate is $2.71 for up to 30g (There is a single to cover that postage rate).

The International rate for 30g to 50g is $3.88. If you want to use "P" stamps to cover that rate, you will have to use five "P" stamps which will equal to $4.60. As you can see that this is 72¢ over the actual rate of $3.88.
It does pay if you are humble and kind.

I usually preorder the stamps online. I didn't visit the post office on April 8 so I don't know if they had them then. They do have them now.

Interestingly, the microprinted date on both stamps is 2020, not 2021. These were originally on the program for last year, but were delayed until this year due to the pandemic.

Hi Jean,

As far as I know, the Ballet Legends singles were to be issued in 2020 but they were postponed until 2021 due to covid-19???

In 2021, Canada Post has released/issued the Ballet Legends singles with 2020 as the year of printing.

So, the singes were printed in 2020 but they were not sent to POs because???

that uncut press sheet, very interesting as it doesn't really look like a "press sheet" as American collectors would call it, since its not a large press sheet of say a dozen of the original gum souvenir sheets. You could *almost* call it a different collectible variety, though how one would display it (it looks huge) would be another question.

It is a very good picture of Turner. I would have preferred a stamp showing him patting the tush of Iona Campanogla though.

Funny enough, few years after he left the liberal party I ran into him at a Gordon Lightfoot concert at Massey Hall. I spoke with him for a couple of minutes and then the theatre indicated that the next set was supposed to start. So we said farewell, and as he turned, I saw him pat the tush of the woman he was with in order to get her to move into the theatre. I was flabbergasted!!

DJCMH,

The size of the Bluenose Uncut press sheet is 650 mm x 420 mm. To display the sheet, you could frame it (As mentioned by Philexx :) ).

For the Bluenose issue, there are 2 different souvenir sheets - one with and one without the CAPEX 22 overprint.

And the large uncut press sheet can be purchased already framed from Canada Post. :D

The large sheet is actually the only format where you can get a perforated strip of 4 stamps. Canada Post calls these large sheets uncut press sheets but they are actually large “souvenir sheets” - there was also one for the bears issue and there were stamps on the large sheet that were not otherwise available in that particular format.

I am of a similar mind Mark. I really like that press sheet and being in the Marine business I have a particular penchant for anything related. I think I still have three or four Empress of Ireland press sheets that I purchased, still rolled up in a tube waiting to be framed. So this time I may splurge and buy it the framed version so I can put it on my wall immediately.

Does Canada Post have plans of releasing more engraved stamps? It's already 2021, we need more engraved stamps like this! Beaver, lynx, whooping crane, wolverine, Pacific salmon... Still plenty to be engraved...

I think that Canada will release more engraved stamps, similar to the Bighorn Sheep, but when? That's a different question. ;)

If Canada Post release only one engraved stamp of this series in the decade, I quit collecting them.
I'm so bored of waiting for them, wish more countries would join Canada and release engraved stamps of native wildlife or species at risk, that would be awesome. Imagine same stamp style, perhaps made by same engravers, but issued by different countries like Sweden, Iceland, Australia, Brazil, China, Russia or even Lithuania... But this will never happen...

I have been waiting years for Stan Rogers to be commemorated. I encourage everyone who is not familiar with him to check out his biography on Wikipedia and perhaps listen to a song or two on Youtube. Although he was born in Hamilton, Ontario, he spent a lot of time in the Maritimes and much of his music had a "Down East" if not "Celtic" sound to it, although he firmly falls into the Folk category. He had a wonderful way with lyrics. Sadly, he died in 1984 in an airplane fire in Cincinnati. If you will indulge me, I would like to post the lyrics to two of his greatest songs. Perhaps it will inspire people to listen to his music.

The first song is "Barrett's Privateers". It is a ballad about Nova Scotian Privateers during the American War of Independence. Although Barrett and the Antelope are fictional, the song is full of many authentic details of privateering in the late 18th century. Personally, this one is on my repertoire of songs for pubs and campfires and usually gets a group stamping and singing the chorus within a few stanzas. :)

Barrett's Privateers

Oh, the year was 1778
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
A letter of marque came from the King
To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen
God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

Oh Elcid Barrett, cried the town
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
For twenty brave men all fishermen who
Would make for him the Antelope's crew
God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
She'd a list to the port and and her sails in rags
And the cook in scuppers with the staggers and jags
God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

On the King's birthday we put to sea
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
We were ninety-one days to Montego Bay
Pumping like madmen all the way
God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

On the ninety-sixth day we sailed again
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four-pounders we made to fight
God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

The Yankee lay low down with gold
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
She was broad and fat and loose in the stays
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days
God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

Then at length we stood two cables away
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
Our cracked four-pounders made an awful din
But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in
God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

The Antelope shook and pitched on her side
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the main truck carried off both me legs
God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

So here I lay in my twenty-third year
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
It's been six years since we sailed away
And I just made Halifax yesterday
God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

The next song is called the "Northwest Passage" Rogers does this a cappella with some back up harmonizing.
ong, it features Rogers alone singing the verses, with several guest vocalists harmonizing with him in the chorus. From here, I quote Wikipedia, because I think it gives a splendid description of the song.

While it recalls the history of early explorers who were trying to discover a route across Canada to the Pacific Ocean (especially Sir John Franklin, who lost his life in the quest for the Northwest Passage), the song’s central theme is a comparison between the journeys of these past explorers and the singer's own journey to and through the same region. The singer ultimately reflects that, just as the quest for a northwest passage might be considered a fruitless one (in that a viable and navigable northwest passage was never found in the days of Franklin and his kind), a modern-day journeyer along similar paths might meet the same end. The song also references the geography of Canada, including the Fraser River ("to race the roaring Fraser to the sea") on the western coast and the Davis Strait to the east. He is driving across the Prairies, allowing him to view cities behind him fall and cities ahead rise.

Northwest Passage

Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea

Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones

Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain

And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea

How then am I so different from the first men through this way?
Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again
All the best,

An Australian cover with a Canadian connection:

The 4d Birth of the Post Office was mailed from Warwick, Queensland to the Hudson's Bay Company in Pangnirtung, Northwest Territories (NWT)--now in Nunavut:
sb_202131a.jpg
sb_202131b.jpg
Note that "Eastern Arctic Patrol / R.M.S. Canada" backstamp.

The cover was postmarked on 15 May 1959 and was backstamped JUN 13 1959. The 4d paid the surface rate to a Commonwealth country.

Whenever I read about "Nunavut", I think of Abbott and Costello's baseball sketch.

Best wishes,
AndrewG

This seems to be an annual issue for the Community Foundation as I have the 2013/2014 and 2015 issues on F.D.C., sadly not in mint. This years issue seems to be the nicest looking stamp of the series so far.
I prefer to collect UK, British Commonwealth esp Pacific area ( not excluding West Indies/Canada ) and Western Europe. At the bottom of my zone of interest is Eastern Europe and communist countries.

On October 8, 2021, five domestic rate stamps were released commemorating five Canadian editorial cartoonists. The stamps depict the artwork of the five editorial cartoonists. The cartoonists commemorated on the stamps are: Brian Gable, Terry Mosher (a.k.a. Aislin), Duncan Macpherson, Serge Chapleau, and Bruce MacKinnon.

The stamps are sold in booklets of ten stamps and each stamp appears on an Official First Day Cover.

The cartoon by Brian Gable features a Canadian beaver sitting in a Muskoka chair with a bottle of beer in one paw and a Canadian flag in the other. Gable said that the beaver is an image “of the little guy,” adding that the cartoon represents the spirit of Canada as, “being friendly and open to their neighbours across the nation.”

On October 14, 2021, a domestic rate single was released to commemorate the acting career of Christopher Plummer.
