The Imperforate Issues of South Australia

Post by PeterS »

South Australia issued its first stamps in October 1855. The first issues were printed in London by Perkins Bacon.

There were 4 denominations printed and despatched to Adelaide, but only 3 of them (One Penny, Two Pence and Six Pence) were issued. A One Shilling value was not issued due to the possibility of confusion with the Six Pence value ( violet vs. Deep Blue).

All stamps were issued on Large Star watermark paper.

The first stamp was the One Penny Dark Green (SG 1).

From 1856 to 1858, the same values were printed in Adelaide from the Perkins Bacon Plates. Additionally a One Shilling value was finally issued.

The One Penny value was issued in shades of Yellow Green (SG 5 and 6).

Deep Yellow Green (SG 5)

Yellow Green (SG 6 - note this stamp is actually rouletted, don't have a suitable imperf version!)

The Two Pence local printing was in a number of shades of red (SG 7, 8 and 9)

All the locally printed values also exist rouletted and perforated.

There are also forgeries out there, some better than others. This Two Pence is rather crude and is on a thick unwatermarked paper.

Some of the 2d imperfs can still be remarkably cheap after 150 years. This I listed up last week for just $A150.

Many of the early SA imperfs all had a STAR watermark,

I recently purchased a sheet of the hand made Perkins Bacon paper, showing that Star Watermark.

Corner blocks of 12 like this are only $A65 and make an interesting addition to any SA (or Tas or Qld or NZ) collection.

With the imperfs collectors need to be MOST careful of rouletted copies with roulettes snipped off making "imperfs".

What would be a fair retail value of a complete sheet would be?
