Aust. 1915 KGV ½d Green single line perf - attempted census!

Post by The Pom »

ADMIN NOTE .. this stamp is SG 20a -- Cat £12,000 mint and £600 used in the current 2019 SG "Part 1". The normal SG 20 is cat £4 mint and £1 used - i.e. packet material basically in used.

Near all turn up by sharp eyed stampboarders and collectors spotting them in junk lots, so well worth taking a close look at this thread!

The Pom's excellent primer on HOW to pick a KGV ½d Single Line Perf stamp is here -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=12505

==============

As some of you may know, I take more than a passing interest in the Australian King George V issue with line perforation.

See here for my guide to these issues:

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=12505

One stamp that has particularly interested me over the years is the ½d Green single line perf (SG 20a, ACSC 64).

The ACSC suggests there are 150-200 known examples in existence.

My belief is that there are more than 200 known examples, with many more waiting to be discovered. I have personally found 5 copies, and find it hard to believe I could have discovered 2-3% of the world's supply of this stamp.

Over the last year or two, I've been searching for scans of as many examples of this stamp as possible. I've looked in printed auction catalogues, dealer pricelists, auction websites, ebay, and, of course, Stampboards.

I realise that it is futile to attempt to track down every known copy - this will never happen. I also realise that proving that something is more common than previously thought could be regarded as shooting yourself in the foot, though it hasn't done the price of the 1d Red Eosin shades any harm.

Being English, I'm always up for a futile and self-defeating challenge, so what the hell.

What I'm aiming at is the following:

1. Any Stampboarders with a copy of this stamp to post them on this thread. Note that I have already pinch a few images from various Stampboards threads, so yours may be in here already!
2. Please ask around your philatelic friends, local clubs etc to see if anyone has any.
3. If you spot one anywhere on the web, please let me know.
4. If you are a member of any other online stamp community, please feel free to publicise this thread.
5. There are major collections like the Australia Post archives etc. Might any of these contain copies we could obtain scans of?
6. Publicity in the Philatelic Press - I might write a letter to Kevin at Stamp News, or maybe even Glen might give it a mention in one of his columns. I am also looking at getting something into the BSAP Bulletin.
7. Any other suggestions?

Cancellation locations found on the Australia KGV ½d Green single line perf stamp

Below are all the scans I have to date. Many are scans from printed catalogues, which didn't come out too well. I will see if I can get better scans of these.

Any additional scans, or improved scans of those shown, will be very welcome.

Cheers
Chris

when watching this posting I notice how many different places they where used in.
I counted 15 different places and three different states so I assume that there must be at least some 1800 of these around?
And 2 of them are punctured OS, so 120 extra?

So line perf's don't match up nicely at the corners, like comb does? If so, I'll look for any here.

Hi Pom
When I saw this thread I was going to make exactly the same comparison you did- with Eosin.
I have 2 with certificate which I will post when I overcome current problems with scanning. I can also state that someone mentioned above found & sold a cover with, among other things, 2 s.l.p's. It was sold for a 5-figure amount & I'm sure has been shown on stampboards somewhere.

Hi Chris!

Just to show some mouthwatering items! This is a compilation of line-perfs a member of this board once showed me in another forum! My eyes were sparkling looking at them! I wish they were mine! It`s the first OS NSW I`ve seen! And pairs are also really scarce I think!

Hi!

I think you should ask the owner itself for a better scan, I`m not sure if he still has them! I only have this one from the other forum! It`s member Koala, I think maybe you remember him as the one who made this incredible italian find of KGV issues!

I've just returned home from Ameristamp Expo 2010 in Riverside California where I had the pleasure of meeting Michael Eastick.

He spent about 20-30 minutes giving me a mini-seminar on KGV line perf/comb perfs, rough paper/smooth paper, etc. He pulled out a sample of each for me to see the subtle differences. It was really a great experience. Thank you Michael.....

I have been hovering here in the background for quite a few months now learning what I can about your specialty, and a couple of days ago someone mentioned his name on a post here, and then I saw the name on his booth.

A few of the things I have learned over the last few months:

Don's dictionary fer dummies
TLC = top left corner, not tender lovin' care.
ROOS = Aussie for kangaroos, to my fellow americans, this has nothing to do with Roosevelt.

Enough, it is now time for me to put a few more bickies in my bucket and get to bed so I can go back to the show tomorrow. Don

Plated from the watermark, actually. From the watermark it had to be position 60, which made it easy to determine that it had to be 3R60, not 3L60.

Almost all known copies were used in the State of Victoria, with town names between A and F (mine was postmarked Benalla), plus Sydney and a few larger places in NSW. That indicates a pretty small quantity issued. I agree with Chris that 150 to 200 surviving is too low a quantity. However, even if the surviving quantity is triple that (or more) it is still one of the scarcest of all Australian issues. Erik, be cautious about just looking for pointy corners. If you compare a candidate stamp with a 1d Violet (which has to be comb and has to be perf 14), you can tell if you have a line perforated stamp since teh perfs will radually fall out of allignment as you travel down the stamp.

But read Chris's thread on line perforated! :)

I've just put together a spreadsheet detailing the postmarks, I'll post it up in a bit.

Frankpost says "used in three different states". They are only recorded in VIC & NSW.
What's the 3rd State? The only candidate I can come up with is Example 3, which I thought might be "HOBART" - if it is, it's a significant discovery.

Looks like Hobart to me. I'll see if I can identify it for sure when I get home in a couple of hours.

Summary of postmarks is shown below.

1. Any corrections/additions/clarifications, please shout up.

2. ACSC says distribution in Vic was to Melb & some PO's beginning with A-F. Data so far agrees.

3. ACSC says distribution on NSW was Sydney & Cessnock. Data so far disagrees, with NSW usages from all over.

4. ACSC says latest use seen is Nov 1916. There are a couple here with what appear to be 1917 cancels.

Cheers
Chris

Chris, I don't think there is any doubt that the Benalla cancel is 30 July 1917. And I have done all the tests to confirm it is a line perforated stamp. :)

I to think it is Hobart, could be a nice find but it also could be that the stamp was mailed to Tasmania left uncancelled and is cancelled in Tasmania to deface the stamp?

And does stamp 12 have a 1915 date cancel?

Can stamp 2 (my example) be plated by the spots behind the roos back and over the top of the 1 in the LVT?
The stamp has a left watermark line so it could be:
3L1, 7, 13, 19, 25, 31, 37, 43, 49 or 55
If it could it would be very nice!

Frank, I tried plating your stamp, but not luck. Maybe wait until the discussion in this thread gets to electro 3 in a few weeks:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=17207&p=625158

I can't find any machine cancels other than Hobart that end in -RT, let alone -ART. It could conceivably be BALLARAT, but I don't think it is.

And they wouldn't use a machine cancel to postmark uncancelled incoming mail. Has to be outgoing from Hobart, I believe.

Hi Pom

When I saw this thread I was going to make exactly the same comparison you did - with Eosin.
The Eosin is the most over-valued stamp in the entire Australian Commonwealth - IMHO. By rights they should be 20% of today's value.

It is thought over 1000 have already been recorded. Indeed, an obvious plate flaw around in that number would be $100 mint and $20 used.

You'll never find out, as only Drury knows, and he is not telling anyone I inderstand! (He owns a fair chunk of them, so maybe that is why!)

For decades it was believed that only the Singleton area NSW, and Bairnsdale Victoria country PO's got a "few sheets" of this distinctive "eosin" ink printing, very evident under UV light.

Alec Rosenblum states this as recently as 1968 in the last ACSC he edited.

It is now known (partly due to Koala's find) they exist postmarked from the 5 mainland states, and even from capital cities like Sydney.

Clearly the number issued was infinitely larger than the "few sheets" once accepted as correct. My guess is many tens of 1000s were sold and used.

The current ACSC prices would appear way too high on that basis. he late Simon Dunkerley and I discussed it several times and he concurred. Australia's leading collector also concurs.

Chris your data base still does not include the superb mint copy on front cover of last ACSC KGV.

Also you should add the used part monogram copy, even if there is no photo, as it clearly exists from Koala's 2 tea chest find -

http://www.glenstephens.com/sndecember07.html

"Mr. X" quietly tracked down the source, and was eventually able to buy it all - TWO TEA CHESTS of Australia KGV stamps on paper.

The hoard was packed in about 24 x large white thick plastic trash sacks like the one shown nearby from his files.

It was the "Aladdin's Cave" find of Australia KGV heads.

In 1998 Dr Geoff Kellow, the ACSC Editor was shown the following KGV head stamps from this hoard:

½d Green Single Line Perf. Used and Perforated "OS"
½d Green Single Line Perf. Used with part "JBC" Monogram.
1d Large Multiple watermark, used Cooke Carmine Pink Perforated "OS".
1d Red block of 4 used with both Rusted Clichés, "Thin G" & "Dot on Y"

NONE of the above were known to exist in 1998

What is your gut feel on the ½d Single Line, Glen?

I agree with Chris that there are likely to be more than the 150 to 200 used, quoted by ACSC. However, with the possible abberation of Hobart, the area of use is still quite restriced, NSW and part of Victoria. On that basis the number must be relatively small, although greater than the 200 quoted.

Hi Glen,
I have both of those, as I said yesterday "more to come". I'm also putting together a provisional list of examples which are known to exist, but which I don't have scans of as yet - see below.

Chris

Exist, but not yet seen

Mint block of 4
At least 4 other mint, including 2 monogram pieces
Used dated Dec 1915
Used examples of vars h, f, i, j & k
My 4th copy - sold years ago
The 4th "OS" copy

On that basis the number must be relatively small, although greater than the 200 quoted.
My gut feel?

With Chris' copies to be added we are up near 100 already on this list.

So that means '150 to 200' worldwide is very clearly on the low side.

HOWEVER, lets say it is really 300 or so, the fact remains it IS listed in ACSC and SG, so will always be sought after. AND there is NO doubt visually they are what they are sold at.

This stamp CANNOT be faked and fool anyone IMHO.

For Salmon Eosin we have several times that amount recorded very clearly. They are NOT in SG, and as not evident visually at all without lights. And yet someone with far more money than sense paid over $10,000 for a used pair at Auction!

I am listing up a 1972 missing colour today for $1,750 - and just 20 copies were recorded.

So in comparison this ½d stamp is way out of whack with that price wise at £6,000 mint, and Salmon Eosins are just in cloud cuckoo land ever further.
