Another interesting uprate.

Would expect to see $0.57 stamp(s) paying the $1.00 letter rate to the USA, assuming the post paid is $0.43,

So someone stuck a $0.50 stamp on, and underpaid the rate by $0.07

Peter, fascinating posting.

Those "POSTAGE PAID" Stationery items by Australia Post, ironically, have proven a rare good investment in their product.

Aside from that Stationery (43c) Postage Paid item you illustrate, now valid for $1.00 postage, the Aerogrammes have out-performed: "POSTAGE PAID" Aerogrammes in the 60c regime now cost $2.40! A rare AP investment, indeed!

I'll let you work out this $1.50 cover to West Germany using 3 X 50 cent Living Together stamps.

Two 63 cent Living Together solo covers to West Germany. A comment hs been made on page 1 that post cards should be reasonably common but covers less so.

Fun oddball use of the $ 0.02 Living Together stamp. Used on a movie prop cover. Entirely contrived. But kind of cute. From the movie Dead Letter Office.

Now, reading back through the thread, I can work out what the $1.00 rate was for.

Image

but I'm encountering difficulty in establishing what a 47 cent rate was for

Image

Image

Especially in light of a surface envelope sent on the same day, to almost the same place, bearing 56 cents.
dwhopper wrote:And a different make up rate. The $ 0.01 is most commonly used to make up rates when the domestic rate increases by $ 0.01. This cover uses the $ 0.55 + $ 0.01 to get to the $ 0.56 rate for up to 20 g standard letter or postcards by sea mail to "all other countries".

Any ideas? Thanks.

47c was the surface greeting card rate while 56c was the basic surface rate up to 1 Oct 1988.
I'm not sure if these rates went up then or continued the same.

Thanks Abutukit. I had noticed a lot of Australian envelopes have "Card Only" written (or stamped) on them, presumably to claim this rate.

Should this read "from 1 Oct 1988"? The envelope is dated 10 Oct 1988.

This 47c surface rate Card Only was new to me. Presumably it is rather scarce. Most overseas-bound Christmas cards would have been sent airmail to get to the destination in time. Unless you were super-organised that is.

The Christmas greeting card rate was usually only valid for the months of Nov and Dec, at least in recent years, which would make the rate scarcer still.

IIRC though was there not a greeting card rate that operated all year round for birthday cards etc. ?

Reasonable period or use so should be findable. It is the higher weight Greeting Cards I want to see. Up to 2 kg are in the rate books.

Hi MJ's Pet,

(I think its still in a box beside my desk..... I've been a bit remiss recently cleaning out the debris).

I don't collect decimal Aus covers, so if this is something you could appreciate, mail me your details, and I'll get it shipped to you (No charge).

Yes they do. And it was right next to the 10c each box of postcards. Time to move from Tasmania, Malcolm.

Things are cheaper in Queensland and the weathers better !

I can imagine a few downsides, but principally I'm thinking that you are in competition with the "cover shredder", who buys these things "to steam off some VFU values" .....
(Rod, look away now :D )

Terry, you need to rise to the challenge of "preserving all the good stuff, and making it available to those in more expensive regions".

Impressive, your grasp of rates, and relative rarity, MJ, in the 18 months you have been an SB member.

Actually, this 53c rate is common.

Unconvinced?

Hi,

A 65c Telecommunications paid the up to 20g airmail rate from New South Wales to New Zealand. The postmark appears to be 2? JAN 1990.

Perhaps 2215 refers to what is now a closed post office?

An exuberant use of the 10c Transport stamp on this postcard from Cairns to England!

Sounds like it has been sent to a collector, so may be philatelic in spirit, although if sent to a true collector, I would have thought the stamps and cancels would be applied with a bit more care?? Does anyone recognise any of the names on the card?
Image Image
Unfortunately, the cancellations are not very clear, but from the eight stamps used, it was most likely sent sometime between Feb 1989 and Sept 1990 when the Zone 5 postcard rate was 80c.

Cheers

Folks,

I thought I would give this great series a bump. Has anyone done an exhibit on Living Together? I have thought about it. I have quite a lot of nice material. I will post some now that I can do so again with the great change in the board and the ease of posting scans.

Didge,

John Moore from Newcastle NSW has a very attractive exhibit of this series featuring the stamps, a very good selection of commercial covers and other material. It scored 80 (vermeil) at China 2019 International Stamp Exhibition and I believe it had obtained appreciably higher marks in one or two Australian exhibitions (possibly Canberra 2018) prior to that. Well worth a look if you get the chance.

Regards,
