3-D PLASTIC STAMPS

In more recent times, the following scarcer 3-D souvenir sheets have been issued – it is believed that many of them were printed in China.

1996 Yemen – Beijing Stamp Exhibition
Image

2006 Egypt – Friendship with China
Image

2008 Iraq – Diplomatic Relations with China
Image

2008 North Korea – Ulmil Pavilion
Image

2009 Micronesia – Diplomatic Relations with China
Image

2011 Cameroun – Diplomatic Relations with China
Image

2012 Maldives – Diplomatic Relations with China
Image

All the above stamps and S/S are 3-D showing (to the eye) ONE image, but with depth.

3-D FLIP BOOK ANIMATION

In 2010 Hungary issued a sheet of stamps showing different phases of the movement of the Gomboc. You can see "movement" by looking quickly at one stamp after another in the right order.
Image

Hungary went further, and put the stamps from the above sheet into a booklet to show the “flip” effect.

FLIP is the simplest of all animation effects, it involves an image change, or flip, from one image to the next. Remember the little booklets showing “moving” stick-men we used to buy – each successive page showed a slight difference, and when the pages were turned one after another quickly, it gave the impression of movement.

Outer Aspects defines flip as “Lenticular Flip Effect is the simplest lenticular animation effect. Flip Effect makes an image flip from one image to the next. The Flip Effect allows up to three separate images to be combined and viewed independently when viewed at different angles while moving the lenticular lens. Each Gallery opens a new page with thumbnails of the lenticular projects, with an option to see the larger animated version.
The flip booklet issued by Hungary where the 30 pages each contain just one of the stamps in the sheet. By flicking the pages of the booklet, the movement phases of the Gomboc are brought to life and its movement appears like a film.

In 2010 Israel issued a booklet commemorating the Association of Animated Films. The 15 pages of the booklet can be flicked through and movement is seen.

Knowing how the “flip” works, we can now look at animated 3-D stamps.

Remember years ago how we could purchase 3-D pictures and when we held the picture at a different angle, a second separate image could be seen? Different images were layered, so when it was moved at an angle, a different image could be seen.

From the early 1980’s some countries incorporated this type of technology into stamps

In 1981 North Korea issued 2 stamps and a S/S for World Cup soccer – when moved vertically, 2 different images can be seen

In 1982 North Korea issued 3 stamps and 3 souvenir sheets for The Birth of Prince William – when moved vertically, 2 different images can be seen:-

3-D LENTICULAR MOTION

Outer Aspects describes it as “full motion video effect” and says “Lenticular Full Motion Video Effect uses multiple frames of an action to show movement from the beginning to the end. It is like watching a movie clip, but on a medium that requires no power. Each Gallery opens a new page with thumbnails of the lenticular projects, with an option to see the larger animated version.”

In 2004, the world’s first lenticular motion stamps were issued by New Zealand Post who described the process in printing the world’s first “action” stamps as follows:-

“The technology behind action stamps
The effect of movement is created through a special printing process called Lenticular. This effect is achieved by two or more images being printed together, or 'inter-laced', into each other. These are printed around the wrong way on the back of a special lens material. Due to the optics in the lens, your eye is forced to see only a very small area of the lens at a certain angle. So, when you tilt the stamp, the images in the stamp appear to move. “

The printers were Xtreme Graphics from USA.

3-D LENTICULAR MOTION

2006 – Netherlands – Going for Gold – ice skating

This set was described at the time as “The eye-catching stamps of Dutch Olympic skaters were produced for TPG Royal Dutch Post and have proved a smash hit in Holland with the entire 650,000 sheetlet issue sold out in 24 hours during the Torino Winter Olympics. The groundbreaking project is a coup for the Australian security and specialist printer, which along with New Zealand lenticular printer Outer Zone, is now recognized as leading the world in the field. Lenticular printing involves the combination of ridged lens material and images processed through a computer algorithm. The printing is on the reverse side of the lenticular lens material, as this is where the focal point is, allowing the images to be replayed back to the human eye as the viewing angle changes.

The two stamps feature 1972 Olympic triple gold medalist, Ard Schenk and 1988 Olympic triple gold medalist, Yvonne van Gennip. Images of the Dutch skating legends were originated from video footage from the time of their triumphs, which presented the designers with additional challenges. Auckland-based Outer Zone used its closely guarded patented technology to produce 12 images of each skater in combination on the lenticular film. The company is considered to be one of the leading lenticular printers in the world. The film was then shipped from New Zealand to SEPS in Melbourne where it was transformed into stamps and inserted into the presentation books under conditions of extreme security. In their final shipping format the stamps are presented in a prestige book format favored by serious philatelic collectors”

3-D LENTICULAR MOTION

2006 – Ireland - Ryder Cup – golf

An Post (the state-owned provider of postal services in Ireland) described this world third lenticular issue as follows:-

“The 2006 Ryder Cup is a hugely significant event for Ireland, and to mark it, An Post is thrilled to announce a truly momentous stamp issue. On 14 September 2006, Ireland’s first-ever lenticular stamps will be issued. Lenticular images, like holographic ones, are those that appear to move when you change their angle. An Post’s stamps feature visuals of a powerful drive off the tee, and a classic bunker escape, and, as the first lenticular stamps to be issued in Ireland, are set to make history. Until recently, lenticular printing was limited to simple ‘flip-cards’, comprising images of 2 or 3 frames, which produced only a very stilted movement. The more frames used to create an image, however, the greater the detail and motion, and thanks to new, sophisticated software, the production of much finer lenticular images can now be achieved. An Post’s stamps feature 50 frames, which combine to provide a virtually seamless passage of dramatic action.”

3-D LENTICULAR MOTION WITH ZOOM EFFECT

Zoom Effect makes an image appear to move closer or farther away The Zoom Effect works best when the background is common throughout all of the animated images, and the animation has been designed to loop the image with no obvious start or finish. Cooler, darker colours in the background and warmer, lighter tones for the element in motion tend to produce the best Zoom Effect. Lenticular .org recommends 8-10 images animated on a single graphic that enlarges and shrinks a key element.

2007 – France – World Cup – rugby - world's first stamp with lenticular zoom effect.

3-D LENTICULAR MOTION

2008 – Austria – Andi Herzog – soccer
Image

Description given at time of issue – “The technology used is called lenticular printing. This printing method relies on a special lens, called a lenticular lens, to produce its magic. First, a total of 48 snapshots, or frames, of the original television broadcast were printed in a way so that tiny strips of the original images were alternated (interlaced). When a lenticular lens is attached to this interlaced image, it allows only one set of the 48 image strips to be seen from each viewing angle. By subtly changing the viewing angle, different images are displayed; if the angle is moved steadily, the image appears to move.”

3-D LENTICULAR MOTION

2010 – Netherlands – Dutch film festival

Co-Design report about this issue – “Tasked to reinterpret the humble stamp by Dutch postal service TNT, communications agency Kessels Kramer ambitiously turned to the world of film. It called on Dutch director Anton Corbijn to create the shortest ever movie – about one-second long. Corbijn took inspiration from a classical Dutch stamp, designed in 1951 by Cas Oorthuys, showing a girl posing in front of a windmill. This he gave a new twist, with help from the Netherlands’ most famous actress Carice van Houten. The film was then translated into a holographic postage stamp, using the latest advances in lenticular printing.

Co-Design stated “The holo-film was produced at the behest of the ad agency KesselsKramer, and it features hottie Carice van Houten – the nation’s most famous actress — in front of a windmill chomping down on some guy’s… finger.”
“It’s Anton Corbijn’s finger,” KesselsKramer’s Kyra Müller clarifies. “We asked him to shoot this film, and what happened was a sort of spontaneous interaction between the director and the actress. It was completely on the spot.”

Seems you're caught up on the HK lenticulars.

HK did 2 M/S late last year to celebrate the opening of a new cruise ship passenger terminal. No lenticular version showing a ship arriving though, because they aren't.

Sorry, but I can't help wondering what all this sand, powdered rock, or other abrasive stuff might do to the postal machinery. Likewise, how many letters with embroidered stamps, or those printed on cork or wood or other thick material, might have been damaged because they did not pass smoothly? Any statistics?

Am wondering what makes an item into a stamp replica or a proper stamp, is it just postal validity? E.g. if postally valid then unusual stamp, but if not postally valid then replica?

Justin - yes, that is correct - the replicas are not postally valid. They are just "created" as collectables.
