Not from Glen, but from Australia Philatelic Federation - nice to see others following Glen's example - anyone know why the serial numbers at the bottom of each sheet and text at top of each sheet are crossed out?

if sender was APF, just using up some remainder Aust2013 souvenirs I think as they paid AP $5 a sheet and were always postally valid for that.

They were doubtless sold for way over $5 to raise funds so just protecting those who paid the high bucks.

Using a ruler with their black line pen and a old horizontal 5c Commem etc over the text box to hide it, or an airmail sticker even, would have been far more attractive.

Jim in Alberta, you might be interested to learn Gibbons now lists that Kangaroo sheet 10 at £130 = $A250!

For those who have not seen them before the "brown rust staining and creases" on outer edges are done by Art Department at PO .. they were all issued looking like that!

Here is an example of what Glen uses for postage overseas; it is outstanding, and well protected by the shipping envelope.

Slightly off topic, and not meant to be critical, but something I had not seen emerge from Castlecrag to date (and I've posted more than once on this thread...).

The yellow strip is adhered on - whilst it looks like a post it note, it is not.

An update from the post above.

Glen (or Margo?) found the 4th sheet, and used it on a recent parcel so I now have the set of four.

These were used for postage - total face value $AUD 13.20, but has a total SG Catalogue value GBP £37.00 :)

Jim .. I see these quite a lot this year. Some mail centres generate them, NOT the Post Offices.

I can peel them off pretty easily - it is like they are 100% Post-It note strip make-up it seems to me.

These are likely to get more prevalent I think, they are changing the print post system that we use early next year, after new sorting equipment is fully installed, their announcement included this....

"Barcodes and yellow labels
All large articles processed through the new machinery will have a fluorescent (orange) barcode
inked either directly onto the article or onto a yellow label which is applied by the machine.
Where the machine detects that the envelope is of a dark colour, plastic wrapped, is glossy
or contains text or graphics in the “detection zone” (see Appendix 1), the machine will apply
a yellow label to the envelope onto which the barcode is applied.
Note: A yellow label will be applied to all plastic wrap articles."

Hopefully their new sorting equipment actually works....

Hopefully then the machine will also actually apply the yellow label in the same detection zone and not across the top of a parcel or envelope!

It should be bottom right or top left (if the machine applies it upside down) and not across where stamps are usually placed.

At least all the ones I've tried do peel off easily but with care - they are a heavier grade peel and stick label.

I have examples at work though, where it has been applied to a perfectly normally addressed white envelope!

Thanks a million Glen, much appreciated browsing over the order, and will get back to you soon with another.

This beautiful grab bag of CTO stamps and goodies awaited me today

Image

A new stampboards mousemat, which is in use now.

Image

Gorgeous range of nice CTO minisheets of recent Australian issues, most of them will be going into my Australia collection (Which is very incomplete after 1990, except for the occasional complete year).

Image

Highlights are these two - the 1999 Australian/Irish Joint issue, which I did not have and needed for my Irish collection and the Eureka stockade sheetlet of 2004, one of my favourite bits of Australian History.

Thanks Glen and Margo :D

PS The lot I bought too was pretty great, but with beautiful extras like these and more (2 cards with an image of the 2016 Adelaide 30c provisionals on them), they are streets ahead of numerous Trade me buys where you get badly packed stuff and a white label or Kiwistamp on it.
Militantly left wing and proud - but not a communist.

All concerned

A package from Glen containing the huge "Plating Papua'' Book, a fabulous book, by the way -

Image
The original package, opened
Image
Peeling off the label
Image
More to come
Image
Most of the sheet
Image
Everything revealed
The package 'notice' arrived last Monday and was picked up at my post office on Tuesday. However, it was only on Sunday (yesterday) that the postage was extracted, so nothing for the garbage man!

Full sheet of the large $5 "Treasures From The Archives" $5 stamp.

I was initially convinced that the address label was too thin to conceal anything underneath it. I was wrong.

It made the book's purchase considerably cheaper.

Kindest regards

Richard Debney

Re: "Free" Parcel Shipping Stamp Frankings From Glen Stephen

Post by Global Administrator »

Good to hear Gregory. :)

I mailed the superb Arthur Gray KGV Auction sale book to Luzern Switzerland yesterday. (SEA MAIL -- air was about $80!)
Image
Sea Post was $50. Well it was actually $47.80, but client wanted the $5 Corner pair!

I used a corner pair of current $5, and a corner pair of the current $20 ULURU/Ayers Rock top value INTERNATIONAL. (Value VFU thus, more than he paid for all the shipping!) All will arrive with FULL UNHINGED GUM on reverse, but with yesterday's dated cancel on front.

Postmaster neatly cancelled each with a ''Socked On The Nose'' CASTLECRAG cancel - so all still have full unhinged gum. THEN I placed them inside a clear cello bag, and taped that to parcel.

This saves scuffing or damage or creasing en route.

THEN I take a thick chisel point black sharpie/texta market pen I carry with me on PO visits, and added heavy black squiggles right over the top of all stamps as you can see.

Then PO added all their relevant "0.00" and "SEA POST" labels etc to the package, and dropped it in the mail sack.

Why the ugly marker pen? As I found in some cases, PO staff here or in Europe or Switzerland etc peeled off the cello packet, to steal $50 of cool looking stamps. Send it to India, Thailand, South Africa, Peru, etc these are near GUARANTEED to be stolen by PO staff somewhere. The heavy black marker lines LOOK like they are right over the stamps at a quick glance, so no-one bothers stealing them - works like a charm!

Worth all readers keeping this in mind. YES it does take some 5 or 10 minutes of my time at PO to mess about with all this, and a little bit of forethought, but if my client is paying $50 postage (and it is very often $100 or more) I like to see they essentially get ""FREE Shipping""! And this simple trick ensures that. :!:

Indeed, one client abused me last week saying some PO vandal had destroyed his pretty stamps with a Sharpie Pen!

For years the PO here seemed happy for stamp blocks to be cancelled and placed on top of each other, in a clear cello envelope, and a note added as to total franking enclosed thus. So 7 x different $2 blocks 4 placed on top of each, and marked as "$56 postage herewith" seemed to keep everyone happy for years, and took up less space on parcel.

Recently all Mail Centres here heavily beefed up their "Internal Revenue Protection Teams", and all Postmasters were advised by Memo all stamp franking needed to be fully visible at a glance. I can see their point, as I am sure some senders abused the old system, and the image above of course now fully complies.

Pretty much all senders can mail things like the above I feel sure, in most countries, IF they are friendly and smiling to PO staff, and most importantly are patient, and choose a QUIET time of day to visit PO as I do. Arriving at 4.50pm etc, is NOT a good time for this stuff!

Full gum, with thick cellophane then taped over the top - his book will be essentially be ''post free'' as the corner pair sells for around $A40 so nicely used!

Good to hear Barry. Sure took its time, but hey "Free Postage" once again, 10,000 miles across the globe.

A full gum pair of $20 Uluru, truly postally used, is a rare thing. :)

Wow, Thanks Glen (and Margo), love the 'free' stamps accompanying my 'Triumph Stamp Album' (yes 100s if not 1,000s of stamps).

Luckily I didn't have to wait long, mind the postie waited even less time - knocked on my door, I went straight away to answer, postie already left with the package sitting on the chair next to the door.. He/she wasn't bothered waiting for a signature.
