Door-to-door mail delivery under scrutiny as Liberals launch Canada Post review
Liberal election platform promised to stop plan to end home delivery services

CBC News Posted: May 05, 2016 10:21 AM ET Last Updated: May 05, 2016 11:35 AM ET
Canada Post temporarily suspended the conversion of door-to-door delivery to some community mailboxes last October, after the new Liberal government was elected.

The federal government has appointed a four-member independent panel to conduct a formal review of Canada Post and study a wide range of issues, including whether it should continue with door-to-door mail delivery.

A parliamentary committee will also hear what Canadians want from their national postal system, aiming to report back to Parliament by the end of 2016.

The federal Liberals campaigned on a promise to "stop Stephen Harper's plan to end door-to-door mail delivery in Canada." The platform said a Liberal government would "undertake a new review of Canada Post to make sure that it provides high quality service at a reasonable price to Canadians, no matter where they live."

Public Services Minister Judy Foote told reporters Thursday that she isn't ruling anything out and won't prejudge the outcome of the process.

She said that might not mean five days of home mail delivery per week, but could result in two or three days of delivery services.

The Liberals will spend much of this term in office unraveling what the Tories did.

Census is back, government scientists are unmuzzled, now Canada Post may be re-reformed.

2 or 3 days a week delivery is all anyone needs residentially, given that most mail is junk to start with.

A "before and after" image that shows what a home looks like when it is forced to host Canada Post's community mailboxes.

This homeowner actually managed to get the boxes removed, and shifted to an area of town without houses. It apparently required "years" of complaining to the post office however.

Love the quotation from the town mayor in the article,

"You are going to get people coming when the mail is delivered," Savard said. "You could get two or three cars and it could get congested."
Big box move: Canada Post removes boxes from man's front lawn in Benoit's Cove

David Joyce can not wipe the smile off his face since Canada Post removed the unsightly community mailboxes from the front of his property last Thursday.

"I got a friggin' driveway that I didn't even realize I had," Joyce said as he pointed toward the space the boxes used to occupy.

The Benoit's Cove, N.L., man complained to Canada Post for years about the long line of mailboxes directly in front of his house, and the long line of traffic that came with it. He said two of their family vehicles had been damaged by people checking their mail.

"At least the roads are not blocked off," Joyce said this week. "It's not a danger no more."

The Joyces have tried to sell their house in the past, but the mailboxes have proven to be an issue for potential buyers.

After he took his concerns to CBC News in September, representatives with Canada Post visited the family and told them the mailboxes would be moved.

In an emailed statement, Canada Post said a representative "met and spoke directly with the resident who raised a concern on Sept. 21 to confirm that we would be relocating the community mailbox site this fall."

Representatives worked with the municipality to come up with a new location less than a kilometre down the road in Benoit's Cove, on the province's west coast.

The new community mailboxes, installed on Gulf Road, have no houses next to them.

"There are two ways in and out," said Mayor Glenn Savard. "To me it's a good location."

The municipality plans on improving the area before winter sets in so there is more room for people to park.

"You are going to get people coming when the mail is delivered," Savard said. "You could get two or three cars and it could get congested."

As for Joyce, he plans on putting his house back on the market now that the mailboxes are gone.

"I have myself a walk out here every evening just to come and have a look, just to see [the view]," he said.

The Canadian government has announced home delivery will continue...for those who still have it. For those who were switched over to "supermailboxes" in the last few years--they're stuck with them.
Canada Post to end community mailbox conversions as part of Liberal reforms

The Canadian Press · Posted: January 24th 2018

The federal Liberals will today spell out their long-term plan to reform Canada Post, making permanent a freeze on converting home delivery to community mailboxes.

But some 800,000 families who have already started walking down the street for their mail won't see door-to-door delivery restored — a move that's sure to upset postal workers who have demanded the post office turn back the clock on mailbox conversions.

Rather, federal officials tell The Canadian Press that the government will set up a task force to confront any accessibility concerns those 800,000 households and anyone else may be facing, with an emphasis on better serving seniors and people with mobility issues.

The Liberals vaguely promised during the 2015 election campaign to "save home mail delivery" after the previous Conservative government decided to end it as a cost-saving measure and instead deliver letters to community mail boxes.

Senior leadership at the post office, which is in the midst of a large-scale turnover that includes a search for a new CEO, will also be mandated to establish more cordial labour relations.

As well, officials say the government will push Canada Post to promote its remittance services, encouraging more customers in Canada to use the postal service to send money to friends and family abroad.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has called instead for a reintroduction of banking services at postal outlets as a way to make money, an idea that has been rejected by the agency.

Canada Post will also be expected to look at how other countries have used weekend delivery or parcel lockers to bolster their postal service revenues, and ways to leverage the fact Canada Post has a presence in even the smallest of Canadian communities, and could be used to deliver other government services.
