The late Colin Salt researched and wrote about these in a self published book in 2009. "South Australia, The Machine Date Cases of the Country and Suburban Offices including Northern Territory" I'm not sure whether the book is still available, possibly a request to the BSAP in England or maybe Glen could source it for you. Colin also wrote on the same subject for Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales.
The Kilkenny is type 1 for that office in Colin's book. He recorded it from 1962 to 1975.

I am a bit unsure about this one, it could either 1873 or 1878, I sway toward "73"

Saltia ~ Type UF4b ~ (9/4/1874 - 11/7/1891) ~ Rated 2R

I think this is 12/7/1873 ~ New ERD perhaps

Checking this one on Retroreveal it has an S5 index but appears to be earlier than shown in the book with a date of No 19 78, but it looks like it measures 24mm, is it an F1-6 with another index(S5) ? or an ERD of F1-7 ?

Here's another

Birdwood ~ Type C2T ~ LDL (26/11/1918 - 1958) Rated V ~ (SDL 22/3/1960 - 1/4/1971) Rated C

I don't know if this is SDL (small date line) or LDL (large date line) as I have nothing to compare it to, but the end date is 1959.. The last letter of the month is "E" but I cannot determine the 1st letter..
So it could be FE, SE or even DE (Feb, Sept or Dec)

What do you think Neville ?

The "L" can appear to be an "E" but that is because of its position in relation to the sailors leg, so here is a retroReveal pic..

Yes it is supposed to be, but sometimes it has been "JL", Rine Park is one example I came across just now.. And check out Snowtown..

As a matter of fact there are heaps of them, as I flip the pages..

And in relation with the letter "E" the middle bar would be between his legs, wouldn't it ?

I think the middle line of the E is right on top of the inner edge of his pant. And the top points to the I in Australia.

I'll only make one post in here today and give Neville a chance to catch up..

I know that the Adelaide section is a "work in progress" but these 2 may help that..

The Adelaide section is a bit of a mine field for me so hopefully I have allocated these 2 cancels in thier correct place..

I think this 1st one is Adelaide ~ Index 52 ~ Type C9T ~ SDL ~ 1978 - 2/4/1990 (page 40)

My date is 21/8/1995

Image

2nd one is Adelaide ~ Index 40 ~ I cannot find any reference to this cancel.. If I am on the right page (32) it skips from Index 39 to 41.. My date is 28/9/60

Once again, just one post

Nantawarra ~ Type C3 with either a MDL or the SDL ~ you decide..

The date is 31/10/1961 ~ need your input here Neville
Image

And Nuriootpa ~ Type C6T ~ SDL ~ 1/7/1959 ~ Rated 2R ~ What does it mean when only one date is present as opposed to ERD to LRD ?

The date here is 30/6/1959

"What does it mean when only one date is present as opposed to ERD to LRD ?"

Only date known.
"Normally" it would rate 5R but in the case of Nuri we would expect a lot more copies to turn up - hence 2R.
I would expect it to be C.

Hi Tony,
if there is a stamp with a cancel that is one of a kind and only showing the year on the date, then that date is considered to be the only known date, so when someone discovers another cancel of the same type with a full date (day, month, year), then that must be the ERD, as the full date is now the 'starting point'. Maybe it is also the LRD until someone finds another with a readable full date?

Regards,
Mike

1965 has been reported by a reliable source but I have not personally sighted it.

Back with another couple, Tantanoola this time..

Tantanoola ~ Type C3 ~ MDL ~ 2?/?/1950 - 1/9/1959

I believe this cancel is 12/12/1959 ~ note that the "2" in the 12 is hard to pick..

Sorry Tony, it's the acronym for 'Socked on the Nose' or a near, perfectly struck and well-centred cancellation on a stamp or piece.

Here's PARINGA C10T that is clearly an MDL BUT it seems to be sLLLLL as opposed to the ssssLs shown in the book and is 4 years later so can I assume this to be an addition?? and while I'm at it what sort of time is 3NP??

Hi again, I am assuming this is the LDL of Elizabeth North, but perhaps it could be classified as a MDL as the year is smaller, what do you think ?

Elizabeth North ~ Type C6T ~ I think the date is 23/11/1959
