World Stamp Expo NYC, May 28-June 4, 2016. A wide overview!

Post by Harri »

Hi, Who else is going??

Have already made a few inquiries, only 2 years away, I went to the last one at Washington DC in 2006, had a blast.

I don't go as an exhibitor, Just for the hype and a few bargains, and the chance to look at material that I would normally never see.

I have a home about 125 miles (200 km) north of New York City and I may attend the show, about a three-hour-plus drive or one of the most scenic train rides in America along the Hudson River.

Without traffic (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!) I can be at the Javits Center from my house in around 20 minutes.

So yeah, I think that I may make an appearance :)

Edited to add: If you're going from anywhere west of the Hudson river, you really want to take the Port Imperial Ferry there. Traffic in Manhattan is brutal and parking costs a fortune.

Being a pensioner, this is a trip I have to plan and budget for, I don't go to many exhibitions, and It's not as if I can outlay expenses in one hit.

2 years is a reasonable time to plan financially for this event, and I am mindfull of the fact that the 12 month Window frame time to book acc and flights has to be done at the earliest.

Not much acc within Walking distance of Javitts, but anything at a reasonable rate around Manhatten will do, as Taxi's are still a cheap way to get around

I also want to travel up to Woodbury commons to do some shopping and also visit a friend in Newark, so it's a bit of a holiday for me as well.

I am still going thru some of the material I bought at Washington DC 4 years ago, at one of their 'in house' auctions, got some fairly nice early NY Duplex cancellations on piece.

IMHO those stamps are pretty bland...that won't attract people to collecting.

You will be able to buy them from your local post office - but I can't see many people being interested in them. They are ranking alongside some of USPS other efforts this year for the worst design. Linn's Poll should be interesting next year!

I get that the stamps might be badly designed for modern issues, but they remind me of classic-era stamps. Although I wish there was somthing in the design!

Just booked a holiday timed to end in New York on 30 May, so I will be there.

Looking forward to meeting fellow stamp collectors and taking in the sights, at least those we can fit in.

Sounds like a good time to unload your collection or parts of it that no longer carry your interest. Dealers and stamp auction firm will be needing to expand their inventory .
The one thing that you can be assured of is that people will be coming to spend.

I'll also be there.

And agreed on NY City. If any of you are coming in from far away and haven't been to NY City before, make sure you spend some time here and not just at the stamp show.

And yes, the pace is huge... I think the NYC Metro area has something like 90% of Australia's national population.

I really would love to go next year but alas the show falls the same week as both a major USA holiday and the start of a new month, which for someone who works in grocery retail (I manage the seafood dept of a big supermarket branch here in Columbus) the chance of getting time off then are between slim and none :(

Anyone know any info on Canada's international expo. Usually happens in years ending in -7 but have not seen anything yet. Just curious where it will be mainly at this point.

Previous ones were on years ending in -6 -- CAPEX '86, the show in '96 (also CAPEX?). I don't remember one ever happening in 2006 though--I would have gone if there was. But then there was CAPEX '78, so the precise year might not be set in stone...2017 will be Canada's 150th birthday, so a philatelic show would be great to include in the celebrations.

There's 23 million Australians. There's 20 million people in the greater NY City area.

When did I say Australians were Yokels? It's not like I use a ridiculous mock redneck accent whenever I speak about the citizens of another country. Oh. Wait a second......

You may not have said they were yokels but you did say:

"I think the NYC Metro area has something like 90% of Australia's national population."

... which would mean that only 10% of Australia's national population were in Australia.

Oops, forgot about the pedantic Olympics! My bad.

The New York City metro area has a population that's equivalent to roughly 90% of Australia's national population.

See, what that means is that it's a HUGE place with a LOT to see so coming here for the stamp show and not seeing anything else is a waste of a tremendous opportunity.

Ok,
Some nominations please. Already booked the Hop on/off bus tour and a Broadway show before going on to Boston for 2 days returning to New York on PM 30/5 (oops forgot it's different, so 5/30) for 5 days.

After seeing the stamps issued by other stamp shows in various countries on the other threads, I've realized how underwhelming these stamps are, issued by USPS. Surely they can do better than this! This is quite embarrassing

It depends on what floats your boat as they say. The tour bus thing is fine, but I'd suggest getting away from the touristy stuff and seeing the real NY City.

What sort of stuff interests you?

There is a slightly better than vague chance Margo and I might pop over for this, via Japan or China or Korea for a few days in one of those, en route. A lot of flying, whichever option.

I get the feeling this is the last of the true Global Mega Shows we will see, and we enjoyed ‘Washington 2006’ and the Americans certainly run great stamp shows.

I host a large annual Frequent Flyer weekend here in Queensland on the Expo opening weekend, but can get away from here May 31, which gets us to NYC midday June 1. It is a 14 hour direct flight from Korea, so we will be well rested.

So tonight we thought what the heck, add one onto the other and tack on our road trip in Tennessee or Maine or Oregon or somewhere off the beaten track, to the end of it!

Maybe we can ask for a general expression of interest from folks, as to whether a casual dinner can be pulled together for stampboarders attending the New York Expo 2016 show?

I am guessing a dozen or 15 will be about the mark, but who can tell at big shows. We had several dozen members at Melbourne 2013 at our dinner.

Wed June 1 will probably work for us, or Thursday 2, or even Friday 3rd June.

Somewhere inexpensive nearby to Javits Center seems most sensible. For these things I like casual places like the Stage Door Deli type deals, but there will be endless choices I am sure mid-week.

The show closes 6pm each of those nights, so an early dinner at 6.30pm or 7pm or so seems sensible. We are not after a fine dining experience at $100 a head, just somewhere cheerful, and hopefully pretty quiet, to catch up with other members.

The official Palmares Dinner is June 2, so that will tie up a few folks I imagine, so please add your input here as to when you will be about, and if you are likely to be able to attend, and we can try and sort something out. 8)

We can't be there for the full show so no point is asking the organisers if we can have a table as we do at most shows, as we need to organise laptops and TV monitors and signage etc for these things.

I intend to attend, although I still need to re-route some other plans to make this happen.

I am in the general area, and cannot NOT show up, given that some long-sought stamps might finally surface among all those dealers.

I've bought my return ticket, already, and will be leaving JFK on the evening of the 3rd June.

I think there's going to be quite a large group of us from England, but I am unclear who else is a member here.

I do not intend to be present at the Palmares Dinner. I detest that type of occasion, much preferring informal meals.

I'd suggest something rather authentic for the out of towners... Pizza/Italian?

Thanks Bill.

Yes we can be guided by you local guys - somewhere "cheap and cheerful" ideally, as many folks are on budgets at shows. 8)

Charles Shreve took a few tables of ozzie dealers etc out to "the finest steak house in Manhattan" (see photo I took nearby) and I bet the bill ran WAY into 4 figures. Still the sale invoiced at $A7.15 Million, so I am sure that paid for a few $70 steaks!

Indeed if we get the usual decent turnout, somewhere that might have a side room or private room is better still, so outside noise is minimal, and folks can get to speak to those other than those sitting next to them!

I will be there and always be ready to go eat!

I'll be working the Precancel Stamp Society booth.

I'm not sure yet what my plans look like, but I would like to come, even if I was too lazy to enter any of my exhibits. [Reminder to self: I still have 9 frames to mount before the end of the month] My friend exhibits so I expect him and a few other Swedes to also be there.

I can possibly combine this with an event in CA the weekend after.

I plan to go as well....

However, the best dates for me would be the tail end of the show (Thursday June 2 to Saturday June 4th 2016). I know I would miss a lot--but half a loaf is better than none!

Airfare package deals (bundling with hotel room) always work out to be not much more than airfare alone, so I might suggest any collectors "on the fence" check out their options early!

Compare using Hotwire(dot com) Expedia(dot com) and Momondo (dot com) for some real deals including hotel room!

It will be fun meeting many fellow StampBoarders, and New York City has some of the greatest places to meet and eat!

So that we can recognize one another (and publicise this forum) are there any StampBoards T-Shirts available to purchase?!?

:o :D Well if things are easy and calm in my life …I most certainly will go… Is this as big as a comic con?

I'm always dropping my kids there (Javitz Center) I can't even image that many stamp dealers/exhibits, it's huge!

… I will check out the web site…. :D Thx

I had been thinking "aww yiss, gotta go to this"...but I just realized the dates clash with another event I had been thinking of attending, the Pacific Arts Festival, in Guam (an every four years gathering of the Pacific Island nations to put on various dancing and things). Maybe I can squeeze in both, that's a fair bit of travel in a short-ish time.
Collecting Mongolia; Thailand; Indo-China; Mourning Covers; OHMS.

Jeremy .. I've been to Guam and Saipan a dozen or two times, and trust me you are missing NOTHING there to be honest.

A humid, hot, run down hell hole. 8)

United have flights from there to NYC, and they used to be dirt cheap prices to USA starting from there, which is why I was there so much.

Indeed as UA have direct flights HKG-GUM, if you buy some UA miles at 2c each when they have their never ceasing mile sales, for $US1600 RT you can fly HKG-GUM, then to NYC, and back home to HKG via Tokyo etc. Award Availability on all that right now.

Destination NYC, stopover GUM, and open jaws are allowed. So you see both places on 1 ticket if you think outside the box.

Hubby and I are going down for the weekend May 27-29.

I've just found out that there will be a gold medal exhibit on Blood there, which I am very much looking forward to seeing, along with all the other exhibits!

Jean, seems like you will miss the stampboards dinner, unless you linger for a few days?

I know and will be sad to miss :( , but work constraints will only allow a weekend visit, and we opted for the first weekend of the show.

For any ozzie flying over, saw these excellent fares today to USA West Coast. Must be booked in the next few days.

http://www.airnewzealand.com.au/north-america-sale?&gclid=CI2m89nMpcoCFQqAvQodTQwEAg

Have never seen Biz fares that low to USA for those who want to make the 16 hour trip each way in comfort, and best of all seems to be a ton of availability at end May period each way.

And economy at sub $A1,000 inc all taxes is fantastic.

Have a stopover as long as you want in LA or SFO, and book your own fare transcon (there are always deals) and a pretty cheap show to attend, and holiday as well!
.
Click HERE to see superb, RARE and unusual stamps, at FIXED low nett prices, high rez photos, and NO buyer fees etc!
