Stampboards Expo 2016 Dinner Wed, June 1

When? - Wednesday June 1 – show closes 6pm that night, so an early dinner at 6.30pm or 7pm is perfect. June 2 is Palmares Award Dinner and some members are committed to that one.

Location to be decided, but to be close to Javits, and to be of medium cost, and casual, and ideally not too noisy. I'll add location when decided upon by locals who better hurry up please with confirming a firm place.

Please post on this thread if you can make it, ("maybe, possibly, cooda wooda shooda" mumbles we do NOT count!) and note any others coming with you, and I’ll update this conga line regularly, so as we get an ACCURATE number.

We have held similar stampboard dinners all over the globe in the past 9 years, and they are a superb way to match names and faces to handles in a casual environment. stampboards is a friendly Community, and Dinners are what we do for large shows. :)

We cannot read minds, and do not assume we can! IF you plan to attend, please post here, so we can organise this. If we book a table of 14 or 20 in a very busy place, and exactly 14 or 20 are on this list, do not ASSUME you can wander in on the night, with no notice! You may not be able to be seated. Sorry, but that is an obvious reality at times in busy places.

If you posted earlier on thread saying you were “probably OK for a dinner” please confirm it, now that we have a firm date.

Many members have posted they are going to be AT the show, so please add a post if you can make the Dinner. Be silly not to, but it is your call.

Notabene (Johan - Sweden)
DennyTex (Denise - NYC)
Barryfe (Barry - NJ)
Steven Zirinsky (NY – “Maybe”)
Greaden (Philadelphia)
Ausfoo (Georgia USA)
anichat (Phillipines)

Number above “14” so far. Let us know by posting here if you can’t come now, or are NOT on this list!

Glen
Any more takers?

Anyone above need to be taken off this list? We can't read minds folks so some input please. :)

Glen
Updated it to be 14 likely attendees with anichat.

I like the idea of our group meeting somewhere AT Javits first, and walking down together.

Can Bill or someone else suggest an easy to find place in Javits where we can assemble and mingle at 6pm or so, get to know each other, and ideally all walk down to the 15 minutes to Clydes as a group tomorrow evening?

Glen,

I would suggest we meet right in front of the Curtis Jenny airplane. You CANNOT miss it!

I will also be at the show all day, I swapped time with work so expect to see me in some sort of Hot Rod T-Shirt and Jeans.

I will call Clyde's after Noon and amend the reservation to 14 people.

Had a great day today. Many covers and stamps sent to SB members so hope you guys like what you get.

Time seemed too short but guess that's how one would feel in an exhibition of this scale. Most Postal Admins marked up their stamp selling rates. India Post and Bangladesh Post charged ridiculous rates but guess had to in order to get back cost and overheads :)

Dealers mostly had US stamps and covers. There were a few $1 cover bargains around. I may have overlooked some obvious offers due to lack of experience.

I gave the Sales Manager of Armenia Post the SB website as a tip to try and socialise their new issues. She was very excited to hear we had 15000+ worldwide members and promised to join :)

The US Post cancellers did a phenomenal job I think. Tending to the continuous queues and making those huge cancels incessantly takes a lotta patience and client service attitude. Hats off :)

Photos later as I can't upload via phone for some reason and didn't get my laptop :)

Parry - some Orchids your way :)

Bill and Glen /Margo - thanks for adding me in. I'll see if I can convince my better half to leave work 'on time' and join me and see what the he@! is Stampboards and it's members all about :). Very excited about tomorrow :)

Cheers

Sounds a perfect suggestion Bill ..

OK .. lets all try to be there by about 5.45pm Wednesday at the Jenny Plane, as the bullhorn PA system will be urging everyone out the door by 6pm!

Bill will be the easy one to spot, in his Chopper Squad T Shirt - or hopefully in his Gucci Pajamas below .. he'll be pretty easy to spot in the crowd that way!

We are sitting in an Asiana Airlines Lounge here in Seoul, ready for the 15 hour direct flight to JFK, then we will hit the ground running, and get a cab to the show.

Hi All:

Just came back from the show. It was a great show. Never seen so many treasures in one place. There are so many dealers, meetings, and exhibits to see. I regret did not stay for the entire show this time.

The special issue from Australian post is stunning. The special show cancel ones are only issued at a quantity of 250. The mint ones with show logo are also limited release. Some of them can only be obtained at the show. Should be an interesting release.

I will see if I can be there at the meeting point at the suggested time. I have a few too many things to do today as I only land at 3pm in NY. I have a formal dinner at 7.30pm that I can't get out of - but would love to meet up for a pint before that, or a drink after dinner if any of you are still going!

I will be arriving at Javitts Center around 10am tomorrow (Thursday June 2) and will leave sometime Saturday before the show winds down. This is what I look like:

Image

Though my head will probably be buried in a foreign cover dealer box or book, I will be wearing a StampBoards cap**, so say hello if you see me!

** If Glen remembers to bring the StampBoard cap I bought from him :-)

(I'll check the OZ dealers to see if you left it there, Glen--also I will leave a stack of USPS Tyvek mailers for you whereever the cap is left!)

Just wondering (since I couldn't find info on the official site) does Javitts Center have free or cheap wifi? (known as w-lan for some)

Pardon me if it's a stupid question---hundreds of thousands of people so probably a paying option, but if it's free and fast I'd rather pack the laptop than use the smartphone/ipad.

We just arrived at the Times Square Hilton after our genius cabbie from JFK took us on a 1 hour non air-conditioned ride to the Mid-Town Hilton.

After checking into our very small room there, instead of the Suite we had booked, the penny dropped, and yet another cab over to here at last, to have a shower after 20 hours of travel.

See y'all in an hour or so.

Glen

Jim .. yes as I emailed you days ago .. I'll leave the stampboards baseball cap at ozzie dealer Michael Eastick's stand, seeing you are not arriving until after out dinner tonight. :D

Also an invite---my brother-in-law (from Brooklyn) is taking me to the Staten Island Ferry around 2-3pm just before the show closes.

If anyone wants to accompany us that would be fun. My flight leaves from La Guardia at 8pm Saturday June 4th so that would allow around three hours or so for a lunch somewhere in Manhattan before/after taking the ferry right past the Statue of Liberty.

I'd be coming back to my hotel just west of Times Square at 3pm for my bags about five pm Saturday before heading to Queens where La Guardia airport (LGA) is located, so sharing a cab ride with a StampBoard member might be fun.....

My cell number is seven-seven-zero, six-five-six, nine-one-four-eight in case anyone wants to call or text.

I'd be happy to let someone from here call anyone in North America if they see me at the show. Since I'm on a free long-distance plan--if anyone has an expensive, roaming plan, just let me know!

Actually, only one exhibit (the one with the 3 Skilling Banco) is not to be photographed. Go wild taking pictures of any of the other 750 exhibits and the 1 cent Magenta, if you like.

Are you sure? There is a sign at the entrance that says no photograph in the exhibit area. Of course, they don't have guards walking around to enforce it.

These days, I'm not sure about anything.
However,

1 - I took photographs and no one said anything
2 - Other people near me took photographs and no one said anything
3 - There were specific signs on the frames with the Swedish exhibit in front of it (and ropes to keep you off of the frames and an armed guard sitting nearby)
4 - In another part of the show, the Court of Honor, I saw MANY people pose for photos in front of the Magenta British Guiana stamp right next to the guard for that area.

That is all I am sure of.

It is strictly no photographs at the court of honor, I even saw a guard telling off a bunch of people trying to use their phones, there are also clear signs outside,
The guard you mentioned wasn't doing his/her job!

The other exhibits should be OK though

Terrific catching up with everyone for the stampboards dinner Wednesday at Clydes. :)

Great venue for a group, and wonderful company. And thanks to Anichat for the superb gifts from the Philippines.

Ausfoo very kindly rounded us up the AAA guides that a female attendee, who shall remain nameless, said "Give them to me, and you can't leave them behind them that way" duly left behind. So an SOS to anyone passing an AAA office somewhere, in the next day or so!

I had a fabulous time yesterday. August company, great venue, awesome food and a great many common interests. :)

Thanks Bill for setting up the venue :)

Thanks to Glen, phrag99, Greaden, billw2, Barryfe, elephantiger, fossick and Margo for sharing some real pearls of philatelic wisdom and some great stories.

I later realized that the table would've have had 100+ years of collecting experience (cumulatively). It's not everyday that you get to be in such company....that too at the backdrop of the NY World Stamp Exhibition :)

A special day :)

Of course, Flash is not permitted, for obvious reasons.

Sorry, Glen.

I was trying to post that in the FIP 2016 thread from my phone. Had the wrong window. Someone there said that there was no photography permitted of the exhibits.

Too many windows, too small a screen, too little coffee.

Glad you're enjoying our little stamp party.

Hi,

If possible, I would appreciate pictures of any of these exhibits:

Nasser Bin Ahmad Al Serkal
Frames: 3225-3229
Sharjah Postal History

U.A.E. - Literature
Frames
Nasser Bin Ahmed Bin Eisa Alkserkal
Stamp Collecting A New Vision
My guess is that there is a Literature Section that is separate from the other exhibts.

Jassim K. Behzad
Frames: 3944-3944
Aerogramme at Bahrain Postal History

Glen Stafford
Frames: 3431-3438

Please send the pictures through Stampboards' email.

It sounds like an astonishing show!

Thank you,

All concerned/interested

My apologies for not attending last night's Stampboards dinner. It looks like a good time was had by all.

I was completely "asleep at the switch" (re. knowledge of the dinner) in that I practically got the shock of of a lifetime seeing Glen and Margo turn up at the Spink superbooth at around 5.00 pm this evening, where we entered into a discussion of the the recently found stolen McCoy inverted jenny, of which I was partly involved, with my chief.

The show is a magnificent success. I managed a Large Vermeil with the Cape of Good Hope exhibit and the equivalent of a Vermeil with the one frame Western Australia 1854 Lithographed Issue.

Kindest regards

We track and hunt members down in all corners of the globe!

George Eveleth and Richard Debney (Capetriangle) at the Spink USA stand, with Linn's front cover article on the stolen 24c Inverted Jenny stamps that had been handled back an hour or so earlier to the legal owner. After being stolen 60 years earlier from another stamp show! And being re-perforated, and the gum removed, in the meantime.

And the young Irish apparent owner, was flown across and given a $US50,000 cheque today by Mystic Stamp Company, as they'd offered a reward for the return of the stamps decades back.

It appears the young "owner" had basically been given a 'choice' of accepting the $US50,000 "reward", or possibly getting charged with handling stolen goods! He wisely took the money.

It is all like some Barnum And Bailey movie script, but it all happened here today at the show, with cameras and press, and all in from the real Curtiss Jenny bi-plane as can be seen.

Who the folks are at the Mike I have no idea, as I think George emailed me the wrong photo, but Richard can advise, I am sure.

Many members here I am pleased to see received Medals for their material here in New York.

"SAPhilatelist" scored a high award for a World Expo International - Large Vermeil -

"The portrayal of living people in Australian Philately"

We took Martin out to dinner in Gawler SA a few weeks back, and he was madly re-wording the exhibit as some of the "Living Australians" were sadly, no longer living!

Sorry but I haven't responded sooner but I have been insanely busy at work... arrgh.

It was absolutely fantastic to meet everyone at dinner and put faces to names! Too bad I didn't have more time and had to grab the last ferry but I had a great time!

Thank you again to all who were able to make it!

Link to awards is on the show webpage.
http://www.ny2016.org
If not on the homepage, it's on the exhibits page (on my phone. Not sure where you'll find it from your computer)

Well done Chip!

The Sweden coll with the $3 Tre Skilling Banco in it, only got Large Gold, so SUPER well done. :)

We are flying to the Smoky Mountains tomorrow morning.

I got caught in a long conversation with David Feldman this afternoon and did not have time to grab something I really needed.

If anyone is at the show tomorrow, and can grab me a simlpe to buy item I'll fix you for the item and post, by Paypal ..... please email me to advise if you can assist here.
