Newcastle NSW October 2020 Stamp and Coin Expo

Post by RogerE »

Newcastle Philatelic Society celebrated its Centenary with a very successful Exhibition in 2018.

Supported by many high quality exhibits, attendance by many dealers, a steady stream of visitors over three days, and an excellent Awards Dinner, this very friendly event drew many compliments and promises of return visits/participation for the next such event.

Now is the time to plan, because the next opportunity is just eight months away :D

I can guess how happy the attending dealers - who have paid stand fees, airfares, accommodation etc. - will be with the statement: "Or just view their stock".

OR if RogerE used his noggin and posted it as a 900 scan in the first place, and not a 600 one, any friendly Math Professor can confirm for him that 900 is 50% larger than 600.

How's that for a novel idea??!!

I have just been informed that due to lack of funds this show will not be advertised in the Philatelic Press.

I did offer advertising in Stamp News in exchange for tables, but this was declined.

Strange, as this would have only cost them floor space.

This and other factors have led me not to attend.

So shortsighted of the Committee, whomever they are.

Let's hold a show and tell only the rusted on locals about it, (who will all turn up anyway,) and then bewail after the show, how poor attendance was. See this so many times sadly.

SUCCESS is when you attract a lot of NON-LOCALS to journey to a stamp show, and to do that you need to beat the drum WIDELY and EARLY.

Running it just for the handful of local identities is not the vision savvy Committees should have.

The Newcastle 2020 Stamp and Coin Expo, 2–4 Oct 2020,
remains alive and well. With a full six months yet to go, we are optimistic that
it will take place as planned, the current health emergency notwithstanding.

Our Centenary Exhibition, held in mid-2018, was very successful. With it, the
current committee has an established track record. As remarked in an earlier post:
Supported by many high quality exhibits, attendance by many dealers,
a steady stream of visitors over three days, and an excellent Awards Dinner,
this very friendly event drew many compliments and promises of return
visits/participation for the next such event.
I now have access to a better copy of the photo of part of the dealer area from
the 2018 exhibition:

Image

Currently 17 dealers who participated in the 2018 exhibition have committed
to returning. The 17 did good business last time, and they expect that will be
their experience again this time.

The cost of dealers' basic table frontage (3 x 1.8m) is $750 for the three days
of the exhibition, with 24hr security. This compares very favourably with
costs at other exhibitions, which might easily be three times as expensive.
In fact, several returning dealers have requested double stands.

I also now have access to a better copy of the photo of one of the aisles between
two rows of frames in the 2018 exhibition:

Image

The aisles were significantly wider than is often the case at exhibitions, and the
venue lighting was well above average — both features drew compliments from
participants and attendees.

The 2018 exhibition featured 320 frames of exhibits. The 2020 exhibition will
have over 450 frames of exhibits, including the Royal Challenge.

Newcastle Philatelic Society has held a number of well-supported earlier exhibitions
in recent years, the 2018 exhibition simply being the most recent of them. It takes
a significant and sustained effort by the host society to make it all happen, especially
to make it a smooth-running, friendly and well-supported event. Everyone involved is
a volunteer, doing the best they can to envigorate and support public philately. For the
host society it is not a money-spinner, it is a service to the cause of philately. On the
other hand, we recognise that the participating dealers need to make an income, and
we support them in that endeavour.

I hope Stampboarders appreciate the amount of time and energy that goes into
the running of a successful exhibition, and the accumulated experience needed.
We are in fact advertising widely, but every little bit helps, so we hope that you
will help spread the word. We will welcome you if you plan to attend, and if you
choose to submit an entry, then so much the better!

Because of the 6 months plus wait for the Newcastle Stamp & Coin Expo we can all hope the current emergency shut-down will have passed & collectors can get back to being actively involved with stamps & coins.

The wait-and-see period must create anxiety with the organizers, however they are more fortunate that the Auckland 2020, and auctions that have been cancelled or postponed.

Stamp & coin collectors still have "on line" opportunities and can also use this imposed lock down to sort their piles of material in better order. I know my boxes & envelopes of disorganised stamps need sorting. Perhaps I will be able to sell items from countries I never intended to collect, but acquired in an album of other stamps.

Wrong. You clearly turned down FREE of $ cost advertising in the leading Stamp Magazine in the Southern Hemisphere, as Kevin outlines above.

Just telling the usual rusted on locals that the show is occurring will not get new faces. All of them will attend regardless.

Making sure that Stampboarders are aware of the new dates (already
announced in various other places):

Newcastle Philatelic Society has announced the dates for its rescheduled exhibition,
after having been delayed by 12 months due to Covid:
.
The Newcastle 2021 Stamp and Coin Expo, 22–24 Oct 2021
Newcastle Showground Exhibition Centre
(adjacent to Broadmeadow Railway Station)
.
Mailouts to all NSW stamp clubs went out several months ago. (Promotional mailing for the
originally planned exhibition also went to all NSW stamp clubs at least 12 months in advance.)
This new date has appeared in various places, including the Aug 2020 issue (#148) of Sydney Views.

With only one exception, all the dealers who signed up for the original dates were happy to
have their participation carried over to the exhibition scheduled for the new dates.

As in the past, all those planning to participate in any way can be assured of a friendly show
with plenty of quality exhibits, good lighting, and plenty of dealers. Plan to come along and
support the dealers and the hobby.

As before, the Exhibition Committee is headed by Greg Laidler <glaidler_at_bigpond.com> and
John Moore <moore.john_at_optusnet.com.au>.

We look forward to seeing you! :D

Official closing date for entries is 30 July 2021.

Keen interest is being shown by exhibitors. Picture postcard teams are expected from Western Australia, South Australia, ACT, NSW, NZ and possibly Victoria.

The APF has approved in principle the jury makeup with the final makeup to be confirmed when acceptance of entries has closed.

More than 20 places have been reserved dealers. I understand that a very small number of additional dealers places are still available.

Enquiries? The Exhibition Committee is headed by Greg Laidler <glaidler_at_bigpond.com>
with secretary John Moore <moore.john_at_optusnet.com.au>.

I asked the show organisers if the show is still going ahead given the current situation in NSW and adjoining states. I was advised it still was.

My concern is what the current uncertainty will do to attendance. Many interstate dealers may decide not to attend as states may not have borders down in time, and if dealers pull out then attendance may drop. I saw how the doubt over coronavirus impacted attendance at Canberra 2020.

I have my fingers crossed that the show does still go ahead, and wish the organisers well.

So do I ,but trying to predict Covid in NSW in October is a big call.

All the organisers can do is plough on for a few more months and see what happens health wise.

The organisers of
The Newcastle 2021 Stamp and Coin Expo, 22–24 Oct 2021
are proceeding on the optimistic assumption that it will go ahead as planned.

The current Covid outbreak in Sydney has not manifested in Newcastle, where we're very carefully wearing masks, observing social distancing, using sanitising in public venues, and maintaining everyday life with appropriate caution. The monthly scheduled meetings(*) of Newcastle Philatelic Society (committee meeting, main meeting, and social meeting) are continuing with appropriate observance of Covid constraints. Many of us are now fully vaccinated against Covid. Our 2021 Stamp and Coin Expo is three months away — choose to be optimistic with us, and plan to participate.

Third Wednesday of the month, commencing 2.00pm – social meeting, a display of part of a member’s collection, followed by refreshments and lots of social interaction. Concludes 3.30pm to 4.00pm.

POSTPONEMENT

The Newcastle 2021 Stamp and Coin Expo
22–24 Oct 2021

becomes
The Newcastle 2022 Stamp and Coin Expo
27–29 May 2022

.
Newcastle Philatelic Society President Greg Laidler announced this afternoon:
The 2021 Newcastle Stamp and Coin Expo has been postponed until Friday 27 May to Sunday 29 May 2022. The venue is the same, the Newcastle Showground Exhibition Centre, Brown Road, Broadmeadow, 150m from the Broadmeadow Railway Station. Closing date for entries is now Monday 28 February 2022.
We apologise to all those who have been planning to participate in the Expo scheduled for 22–24 Oct 2021. We are sure you will understand that the circumstances are beyond our control. We will regroup and make all the adjustments needed to ensure that the Expo does run successfully and up to full expectations in the new time slot: 27-29 May 2022.

Thanks Temora22. As you are a Sydney resident, you know from immediate experience that Covid lockdown has been directly affecting Sydney for weeks. Now those conditions have extended to Newcastle, and much of regional New South Wales, with consequences for many planned events and uncertainty as to the duration of the lockdown conditions.

For those not already aware of the impact on Philas House, including the next auction and the meetings of various philatelic groups which use that venue or meet elsewhere in the Sydney area, here are two current announcements on the Philas website:
