Newcastle NSW October 2020 Stamp and Coin Expo

Post by RogerE »

Newcastle Philatelic Society celebrated its Centenary with a very successful Exhibition in 2018.

Supported by many high quality exhibits, attendance by many dealers, a steady stream of visitors over three days, and an excellent Awards Dinner, this very friendly event drew many compliments and promises of return visits/participation for the next such event.

Now is the time to plan, because the next opportunity is just eight months away :D

Newcastle 2020

I can guess how happy the attending dealers - who have paid stand fees, airfares, accommodation etc. - will be with the statement: "Or just view their stock".

OR if RogerE used his noggin and posted it as a 900 scan in the first place, and not a 600 one, any friendly Math Professor can confirm for him that 900 is 50% larger than 600.

How's that for a novel idea??!!

I have just been informed that due to lack of funds this show will not be advertised in the Philatelic Press.

I did offer advertising in Stamp News in exchange for tables, but this was declined.

Strange, as this would have only cost them floor space.

This and other factors have led me not to attend.

So shortsighted of the Committee, whomever they are.

Let's hold a show and tell only the rusted on locals about it, (who will all turn up anyway,) and then bewail after the show, how poor attendance was. See this so many times sadly.

SUCCESS is when you attract a lot of NON-LOCALS to journey to a stamp show, and to do that you need to beat the drum WIDELY and EARLY.

Running it just for the handful of local identities is not the vision savvy Committees should have.

The Newcastle 2020 Stamp and Coin Expo, 2–4 Oct 2020,
remains alive and well. With a full six months yet to go, we are optimistic that
it will take place as planned, the current health emergency notwithstanding.

Our Centenary Exhibition, held in mid-2018, was very successful. With it, the
current committee has an established track record. As remarked in an earlier post:
Supported by many high quality exhibits, attendance by many dealers,
a steady stream of visitors over three days, and an excellent Awards Dinner,
this very friendly event drew many compliments and promises of return
visits/participation for the next such event.
I now have access to a better copy of the photo of part of the dealer area from
the 2018 exhibition:

Image

Currently 17 dealers who participated in the 2018 exhibition have committed
to returning. The 17 did good business last time, and they expect that will be
their experience again this time.

The cost of dealers' basic table frontage (3 x 1.8m) is $750 for the three days
of the exhibition, with 24hr security. This compares very favourably with
costs at other exhibitions, which might easily be three times as expensive.
In fact, several returning dealers have requested double stands.

I also now have access to a better copy of the photo of one of the aisles between
two rows of frames in the 2018 exhibition:

Image

The aisles were significantly wider than is often the case at exhibitions, and the
venue lighting was well above average — both features drew compliments from
participants and attendees.

The 2018 exhibition featured 320 frames of exhibits. The 2020 exhibition will
have over 450 frames of exhibits, including the Royal Challenge.

Newcastle Philatelic Society has held a number of well-supported earlier exhibitions
in recent years, the 2018 exhibition simply being the most recent of them. It takes
a significant and sustained effort by the host society to make it all happen, especially
to make it a smooth-running, friendly and well-supported event. Everyone involved is
a volunteer, doing the best they can to envigorate and support public philately. For the
host society it is not a money-spinner, it is a service to the cause of philately. On the
other hand, we recognise that the participating dealers need to make an income, and
we support them in that endeavour.

I hope Stampboarders appreciate the amount of time and energy that goes into
the running of a successful exhibition, and the accumulated experience needed.
We are in fact advertising widely, but every little bit helps, so we hope that you
will help spread the word. We will welcome you if you plan to attend, and if you
choose to submit an entry, then so much the better!

Because of the 6 months plus wait for the Newcastle Stamp & Coin Expo we can all hope the current emergency shut-down will have passed & collectors can get back to being actively involved with stamps & coins.

The wait-and-see period must create anxiety with the organizers, however they are more fortunate that the Auckland 2020, and auctions that have been cancelled or postponed.

Stamp & coin collectors still have "on line" opportunities and can also use this imposed lock down to sort their piles of material in better order. I know my boxes & envelopes of disorganised stamps need sorting. Perhaps I will be able to sell items from countries I never intended to collect, but acquired in an album of other stamps.

Wrong. You clearly turned down FREE of $ cost advertising in the leading Stamp Magazine in the Southern Hemisphere, as Kevin outlines above.

Just telling the usual rusted on locals that the show is occurring will not get new faces. All of them will attend regardless.
