Thank you very much, Rockyman, glad you like the posts. I see you are collecting fossils on stamps. Many years ago, I used to collect "Prehistory Life on stamps" including fossils. In the last decade I narrowed my collection to human evolution on stamps (although I still keep all rest of stamps like fossil stamps). You can see part of my collection in this thread which is still active:

I just received a great cover sent from Radio France Asia, Saigon, South Vietnam to NZ on December 20, 1955:

Vietnam South CV 1955 a.jpg

Vietnam South CV 1955 b.jpg

The cover franked with four copies of the stamp issued on on October 11, 1955 to commemorate the evacuation of about million Vietnamese from the North area to the south area of Vietnam. Here is one stamp from the set, although this particular stamp is overprinted and issued on August 6, 1956 (I don't have the stamp on the cover):

Vietnam Refugees (1).jpg

The over stamp shows Phoenix, issued on September 7, 1955 to commemorate the 1st Anniversary of the construction of the independence palace in Saigon:

Empress Nam Phương (14 December 1914 – 16 September 1963), born Marie-Thérèse Nguyễn Hữu Thị Lan, was the first and primary wife of Bảo Đại, the last emperor of Vietnam, from 1934 until her death. She was also the second and last empress consort (hoàng hậu) of the Nguyễn dynasty.

Here is thephoto used as a model to design the stamp issued for use in French Indochina in year 1943. The second is a colorized photo:

Operation Brotherhood

During Vietnam War, from October 1954 until December 1956, Filipino medic teams went to South Vietnam for humanitarian aid, with the approval of Magsaysay, the 7th president of the Philippines. Their efforts were known as Operation Brotherhood, which received international support in order to help the operation's goals to aid the Vietnamese refugees. The teams treated some 730,000 persons in Vietnam and since January 1957, a 50-member group has given treatment to another 250,000 persons in Laos. The first "Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding" is given to "Operation Brotherhood" in acknowledgement of the spirit of service to other peoples in a time of need.

On November 7, 1956, South Vietnam issued a set of four identical design stamps publicizing the Operation Brotherhood. Stamps were designed by Ngo Cong Ho, Taiwan and engraved by the Japanese Ministry of Finance, Tokyo:

Hi,

Here is a registered mourning cover sent in 1931 from Hanoi, Tonkin (Indo China) to Savigny-sur-Orge, France.

img1610.jpg

The cover is franked with four stamps. One Indo China 1c orange Plowing near Tower of Confucius stamp (Indo China Scott 119 SG 140) issued 26 September 1927. One Indo China 6c deep red Ha Long Bay stamp (Indo China Scott 124 SG 145) also issued 26 September 1927, and a pair of 7c green and black Cambodian girl stamps (Indo China Scott 104 SG 125) issued in 1922.

The stamps are tied to the cover with four 22 -1 31 HANOI-GARE TONKIN CDSs.

img1615.jpg

The reverse is back stamped with one 22 -1 31 HA-NOI R.P. TONKIN CDS and one 28 -2 31 SAVIGNY s/ORGE BANLIEUE-S.O. CDS.

img1619.jpg
img1620.jpg

I've also posted this cover in my Odds and Ends thread, with more scans
(https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=79038&start=250).

I am hoping someone will have information on the rates.

Cheers,

Carmel

Interesting and rare 1957 North Vietnam stamp (Michel #63K). Error in face value (face value is reversed). Top left stamp in block of 4 on the photo.

- catalogue "Michel" of 1993 year wrote that exist (known) 3 such stamps (cat. cost 500 Mark).
- "Michel" of 2006 year wrote that exist (known) 15 such stamps (cat. cost 500 Euro).
- "Michel" of 2015 year do not write about quantity such stamps (cat. cost 350 Euro).

In the last few years I have not seen these stamps on sale.
It seems this stamp is the most expensive Vietnamese stamp (according to the catalog Michel). Scott does not indicate this variety.

Here is a nice cover sent from Hanoi, Vietnam to USSR in 1981, several years after the unification. Arrival postmark was applied on the back. Note the postmark reads "Hanoi No Vietnam" or "ND", I don't know what the "NO" or "ND" stands for and will have to check it.

Hi, turtle-bienhoa,

Possibly, you'll be able to help with this Vietnamese issue (1983, Tennis). I hope you are better familiar with Vietnamese athletes and can suppose who is in the stamp in the bottom row:

Вьетнам_1983_Теннис_Бл_1_Gabriela Beatriz Sabatini_Евгений Кафельников.jpg

The two tennis players in the upper row are Gabriela Sabatini, Argentina, and Evgeny Kafelnikov, Soviet Union, both are Olympians.

I don't watch sports! That means I won't be able to know who those players are.

I checked Colnect and Vietstamp for any information, but no luck (Colnect has the athletes' names for the first two stamps only, Vietstamp doesn't list any names).

Yes, it was issued in 1993, I made a mistake in my first (later edited) post
Still, my doubts remain - it should be a Vietnamese athlete, while Michael Chang was of Taiwanese (Chinese) origin.

Are any of the tennis players Vietnamese ?
The first two aren't.
I think the bottom two may be Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Michael Chang.
The top two plus my possibles ALL born between 1970 and 1974.
Was it Evgeny or Yevgeny ?

Hello, Castores.

The $35 stamp in the set is Scott #34. The overprinted one is Scott #54. Anyone has any information of why the country printed Scott #54? Scott #34 in used condition is very rare, and I am curious to why?

Hi,

Don't have answer to your question but want to add the following: six same design stamps were issued in this set on October 11, 1955. Only one of them, Scott #34 has in the bottom the inscription "chiến dịch huynh de" mean "operation brotherhood". You can read about this operation in my previous post here. I guess it was printed in mistake since the other stamps have no such inscription (Maybe it was planned and cancelled?). Seems to me that the overprinted (Scott 54), which is a black line on the inscription, is a correction of this mistake. It is only my guess. Regards

Thank you Eli for your information. I collect Southeast Asia, some Asia and US, but mainly South Vietnam since I was born there. My large holding of SVN stamps has completed mint collections, and one used collection. South VN is relatively easy to collect with a small number of stamps, but getting all of them in used condition is another story. And that Scott #34 is one of those rare ones.
I wish to meet someone who could tell me the story behind it.
Still practicing posting pictures here to show my South Vietnam.
