Hi Blackchook.

Unfortunately no, not even used as a make up. I'm sure there has to some somewhere and I always have an eye out for them.

Cheers

Hi,

I forgot to check my folder of booklet items.

One one side there is a view of Cooktown, Queensland. On the other side two 39c teapots and a 2c necklace paid the 80c airmail postcard rate to Hungary. The postcard was postmarked 28 AU 9?.

Very, very nice, AndrewG! If it's not one you are desperate to keep...let me know!!

A nice one that turned up in the post today: a 1/6 Galah used solo on this postcard, sent from Ayers Rock to England.

1_6 Galah on pc Back.jpg

1_6 Galah on pc Front.jpg

Although issued in 1964, this was posted in the decimal era on 29 AUG 66. I don't know if this makes it less collectible?

Also of interest is the pictorial cancellation of Ayers Rock. Does anyone know the earliest use of this cancellation? I tried to google it, but didn't get very far!

Cheers

A much more recent stamp but just as memorable! May be just as collectible one day??

A 2013 60c Black Caviar stamp pays the domestic letter rate on this pc, sent from Alice Springs, NT to Mosman, NSW on 12 JUL 2013.

My ears pricked up at the mention of your booklet folder!

A couple of other booklet stamps that are probably difficult to find on postcard:
  • the 1985 1c Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo on Buff stamp - I have seen this only once, & unfortunately not for sale!
  • the 1987 3c Spearthrower and the 15c Shield stamps - I have never seen these on pc.
Would be interested if you have ever encountered any of these?

1/6d = 15c. I believe the air mail rate for a post card to the UK in August 1966 was 13c - thus slightly overpaid.

Still a nice item and I reckon at least a couple of contributors to Stampboards would like to have it in their respective collections!

I can't help with your query in relation to the Ayers Rock postmark.

BlackChook,

The Ayers Rock pictorial postmark applied to your card was introduced on 1 May until 30 September 1964 for the tourist season. Then again from 1 April until 30 September in 1965 - 1969, until used as a permanent type from 1 February 1970 until 2 April 1978 when it was replaced by a new design. It was held at Alice Springs post office.

Note that predecimal stamps could still be legally used into 1968 (someone will remember the exact date).
Nevertheless, predecimal used legally in decimal era are quite sought after.

Nice one!

Thank you Temora22, Bowyum and Abutukit for your help and comments.

I certainly didn't know that pre-decimal stamps used after the decimal changeover were so collectible! But now that you have made me think about it, you don't see that many. I have certainly seen more state stamps used after the first Australian stamps were used after 1913.

Blackchook,

The 1/6d Galah is a lovely thing. There are certainly collectors that would love to have it as a part of their collection. Me included. Its an extremely rare solo usage of that stamp.

Hi Tim

Yes, it is nice to have found this beautiful bird!

I have actually seen one before - about four years ago on a pc listed on eBay that originally didn't even show the back, and was around $2! Given the date listed, I was curious and asked to see the back, so you can imagine my reaction when the galah appeared!

You can probably also imagine my reaction when the internet dropped out as the auction closed! It sold for $2.20 to some lucky person! I was traumatised for months!! ;)
So don't give up hope there are plenty more out there!

Cheers

AndrewG,

I consider yours to be the better item - unlike the 1/6d galah, your 1/- Colombo Plan is correctly paying a rate ( Zone 4 air mail postcard).

Thanks. But if I were asked which card I would like to have, I would say both!

On the other hand, it depends on which and on how these postcards were to be exhibited.

The postcard with views of Logan, Queensland was airmailed to Thailand. It was franked with a 53c Microchip and paid the airmail rate to a Zone 3 country. The card was postmarked 29 DEC(?) ? from Berrinba?

Perhaps they never did get the chance to be good friends.

The rate is correct in my view. Zone 3 postcard rate until 1 July 87 was 50c.

Gone up to 53c then, which fits the previous microchip postcard (stamp issue date also fits).

This one got my adrenaline going...but unfortunately not for long!

A pair of the 1966 3c QE11 coil stamps used on a postcard with a 1971 35c Grave Posts stamp and a 1982 22c QE11 stamp.

Unfortunately, all sent way out of date, on 20 NOV 1988, from Perth, WA to England! But they do pay the correct Zone 5 pc rate of 63c!

3c coil pair on outdated pc Back.jpg

3c pair QE11 coil stamps pc front.jpg

Even though it is not really collectible, being so out of date, it is the only use I have seen of the 3c QEII stamps on a postcard so I couldn't resist posting it.

What intrigues me is how the sender came to have these stamps in their possession to use what appears to be randomly, so long after issue - unless they were a stamp collector and these were surplus. Any ideas?

Thanks
BlackChook
