Short Sky-vans built in Belfast by Short and Harland, a WW@ subsidiary of Harland& Woolf, a famous shipbuilding firm for many years. They served all over the worls as short range passenger aircraft. The ship yards, Short& Harland's and Mackie's Springfield Road factory were targets for Luftwaffe bombing raids on Belfast several times in 1942.

My mother lived a few hundred yards from Mackie's factory. When the air-raid sirens went, her parents bundled themselves up in warm clothing and went up the Springfield Road to The West Circular Road (undeveloped in the 40's) to lie down in the grassy fields as there were not enough air-raid shelters. This is oral history as I did not arrive until 1947.
I prefer to collect UK, British Commonwealth esp Pacific area ( not excluding West Indies/Canada ) and Western Europe. At the bottom of my zone of interest is Eastern Europe and communist countries.

Today was a special day in the history of the Royal Australian Air Force and later I will give details of the event. In the meantime, having today met Canberra resident Reg Johnson, I will post two images he took at this year's F1 race in Melbourne which featured a fly-over by an F/A-18 Hornet.

Back in 2014 Stampboards was represented at the official launch of two postage stamps and the following first day cover was one of several obtained on that day. One of the signatures on the cover was that of the then Acting Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshall (later Air Marshall) Leo Davies.

Image

Now, after four years as ‘top brass’ in the RAAF, and 40 years service he has officially retired.

Image

Details of his career can be found on this site
https://www.stampboards.com/images/jabiru_stamps/AM-Leo-Davies-Bio-2017.jpg

As part of the formal ceremony there was a flypast which featured the five aircraft types that have been accepted into Air Force during the tenure of the outgoing Chief of Air Force.

As usual my point and click camera, in inexpert hands, was not up to the task of taking quality photographs but I was fortunate enough to meet up with Reg Johnson (Spider Photography) who kindly sent me some of his photographs. A selection follows.

Image Image
EA-18G Growler - one of 11 electronic attach aircraft, operated from Amberley, Queensland, and based on the F/A-18F Super Hornet airframe.

Image Image
F-35A Joint Strike Fighter (first sight of one and they are impressive) – there will eventually be 72 of these highly advanced multi-role, supersonic, stealth fighters.

Image Image
Dassault Falcon 7X – now replacing the three CL Challenger aircraft in the VIP fleet based in Canberra.

Image Image

Image
P-8A Poseidon – based in Edinburgh, South Australia these maritime patrol aircraft will total 15 by 2013.

Image Image
PC-21 - currently replacing the PC-9/A pilot training aircraft which ensures undergraduate pilots develop the necessary knowledge and skills prior to progressing onto advanced military aircraft such as the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter, Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter, and MRH-90 helicopter. (I suspect the Southern Cross livery may be the new look of the Roulettes display formations)

Image
After the flypast the Falcon departed for places unknown

Here is an image of a stamp depicting two Argentine Douglas DC-3 airliners and a map highlighting Argentina's claimed sector of Antarctica, designed by Eduardo Miliavaca, printed by lithography, and issued by Argentina on April 28, 1973 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Argentina's first flight to the South Pole, Scott No. 999. Note: This stamp has "1972" inscribed on it, instead of 1973, the actual year of issuance.

It was on January 7, 1962, when two C-47s of the Argentine Navy arrived at the Pole. The inscribed date of "1972" on the stamp relates I believe to the 10th anniversary for which the stamp was issued.
As one interested in DC-3 and C47 aircraft, this stamp's depiction of the aircraft is not even close to aircraft it is supposed to illustrate.

On 9 April 2018 Israel issued a postage stamp to mark 70 years of civil aviation.

From Israel Post:
"The stamp features a DC-4 4X-ACD Skymaster aircraft named "Herzl". This plane flew EL AL's official
inaugural flight from Orly Airport in Paris to Israel on July 31, 1949, with a fuel stop in Rome."

Czech Republic issued two postage stamps on 4 September 2019 with the theme of The World in the Clouds.

Electra 10A

From Czech Post:
The Electra 10A was initially designed as a transport airplane but due to its small size it was mostly used to carry passengers.

Jan Antonín Baťa bought this model for his journeys all around the world. His Electra was registered as OK-CTB from 1937. It was later sold by Baťa’s company to the Canadian Air Force. After the Second World War, the airplane was owned by different owners until purchased by a Texan physician. The Točná Airport owners eventually acquired the airplane after many years of negotiations.

The airplane had to be completely overhauled before it could take the owner and several other pilots back to the old continent in 2015. This vintage airplane is currently displayed at the Točná Aviation Museum.
