This has been posted in the Navigator cover thread: https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=83371 but also belongs here.

Many people have been waiting to see if the block of 8 £2 Navigators on the Merck envelope would flush out any "big" Navigator covers.

Over 2+ years on and nothing has materialised.

Now at the current Philatelics Australia auction #147, a highly-franked parcel front that has been through the post appears.

£7/13/0d Pre-Decimal Navigator franked parcel, 1966 Sydney to London
Lot 153 Starting Price: $5,000 Estimate: $6,000

1966 Large part of cover addressed to Castrol Limited Marylebone Road, London with amazing franking of 1965 £1 White Paper Bass pair (perfs slightly creased at top), 1965 White Paper 10/- Flinders (6), 1964 5/- Dampier (10), 1957 2/6 No Wmk Aborigine and 6d Thornbill, tied by Sydney roller cancellations dated 11 Feb, 1966. The total franking of £7-13-0 represents 68 times the 2/3 Air Mail rate per ½oz, interestingly sent on the last business day prior to the introduction of Decimal currency.

More scans. The rate is correct: airmail parcel paid at 68 x 2/3d air letter rate (for 34 ounces or 946 grams) = £7 13s 0d.

Hi,

A 6d Kookaburra was used to pay the 2d surface to Stourbidge, England from Melbourne, the 3d airmail fee from Adelaide to Perth, and the 1d late fee. Maybe.

The cover was postmarked on ? OC 34 from the Spencer Street, Melbourne, Victoria post office.

AndrewG,

I believe you are correct with your calculation of the rate. Nice cover - I can't recall seeing many solo uses of the large 6d Kookaburra

I don't have one. The best I can offer is this registered air mail cover to Switzerland:

Image

Posted at Sydney on 18 November 1938 - late use as the large 6d Kookaburra had been replaced by the small 6d Kookaburra on 2 August 1937.

Image

Backstamped at Berne on 28 November 1938.

Hi,

Nice cover Temora! Thanks also for your comment.

Another registered with compensation cover:
Image
A 1/ Lyrebird and a 3d brown KGVI paid for registration (6d) and the up to £30 compensation fee (9d). A 2½d Australia Stamp Centenary paid the regular postage rate.

The cover was postmarked 8 NO 50 and was mailed from Penneshaw, South Australia to Adelaide.

Still looking for a 1/3d Hereford.

Best wishes,

½d orange small multiple watermark p.14, 2d brown small multi watermark p.13.5x12.5, plus 4½d single watermark, on cover to USA.

Total rate = 7d.... can anyone suggest what rate was this? I assume 3d letter rate + 3d registration + 1d late fee maybe?

The 4½d has a listed variety - BW120j - flaw in left wattles (1L31)

Re Kiwidude's cover above, posted at Fremantle in October 1918, the sender was 79518 Eustace Claude Fairbrother of 43 New Zealand Mounted Rifles.

Fairbrother, who was a veteran of the Boer War, was en route to Egypt on board a transport (i.e. troopship) called "Malta" which docked at Fremantle on 26 October 1918.

11 Oct 1918 embarked Moeraki then transhipped to [HMAT 17] Malta at Sydney.

26 Oct 1918 docked Fremantle.
27 Oct 1918 depart Fremantle for Egypt.

A rather delightful three-colour King George VI airmail cover to Switzerland:

Image

Image

Posted in Sydney on 25 September 1939 (from Associated Machine Tools Australia Pty Ltd), received in La Brevine on 10 October. The franking of 1s9d comprises the 1937-49 perf 13½x14 3d KGVI portrait (die II), 6d Kookaburra, and 1s Lyrebird.

Cloudwatcher,

Indeed it is a delightful cover.

Here is one with a similar franking combination:

Image

Postmarked at Melbourne on 7 September 1939, four days after Australia had declared war against Germany. Red air mail annulment bars have been applied in London.

Interesting see that my cover has been opened for inspection and resealed by the civil censor and yours, posted at Sydney eighteen days later, appears not to have been checked by the censor.

Hi,

A 6d Australia Imperial Forces issue paid the 3d surface rate plus the 3d registration fee from Toowoomba, Queensland to Lancaster, Pennsylvania:
Image
It was postmarked 3 AU 40.

The addressee would later become a well-known dealer of postal stationery.

Note the big red single dot on the censored strip, which indicates that the cover was censored in Brisbane.

Best wishes,

Hi,

A 6d Kookaburra paid the 3d domestic airmail fee for the up to ½oz rate, plus 2d for the up to a 1oz rate, plus 1d for the late fee (I think).
Image
The cover was postmarked on ?6 OC 34 and went by surface from Melbourne (Spencer St postmark) to Adelaide. It was airmailed from Adelaide to Perth. It then went by surface from Perth to Fremantle. From there the cover went by R.M.S Mooltan to Stourbridge, England. (Maybe)

Unfortunately there are no backstamps.

Best wishes,
AndrewG

A little help please. Attached, i hope, is a 1935 cover Brisbane to Dublin, Ireland (addressed in fact to President de Valera). Stamped at 1/9d, does the extra 3d stamp cover internal airmail within Australia. What would the routing in Australia have been at this time? many thanks. An ignoramus.

Hi

Went for a trip to Morpeth, just outside Maitland, NSW yesterday. I picked this up at one of those arcade type shops where there are plenty of stalls without people manning them, where you browse and take what you want to buy to a central counter and they credit the money to the stall owner.

I'm not sure if this counts as a commercial cover, but it caught my eye as it was the only pre-decimal cover out of the lot that was there.
