The satyr Marsyas challenged Apollo to a contest of music. The contest was judged by Midas. The terms of the contest stated that the winner could punish the defeated one. Marsyas lost and was flayed alive for his hubris to challenge a god.

Claude Andréotto was born in Paris, France, in1949. He spent five years at the Ecole Estienne where he studied under the guidance of the famous stamp engraver René Cottet, while also taking lessons from the engraver Pierre Forget. Andréotto started engraving stamps in 1974. That same year he engraved his first stamp for France: a single stamp to mark the 500th birth anniversary (in 1973) of the astronomer Nicolas Copernicus.

In 1976, Andréotto won his first Grand Prix de l’Art Philatelique, for his French stamp issued for Juvarouen 76. In 1984, Andréotto won his second Grand Prix de l’Art Philatelique, for his French stamp promoting Philex-Jeunes 84-Dunkerque. Andréotto's stamps have won ‘most beautiful stamp of the year’ three times; in 1997, 2005 and 2008. In 2004, he won the Cérès Prize for his Tourism stamp of Bordeaux.

From the early 1990s on he was very interested in the possibilities of computerised art and it has remained a feature in his work ever since. Claude Andréotto passed away on 29 October 2017. (Source: www.stampengravers.blogspot.com)

The title of the thread is, "Engraved Stamp Beauties". This means that an engraver took his/her time to engrave the plates that were used for printing these stamps. You can't just post anything that you think it looks like it has been engraved, in this thread. This is the reason why I asked you for the names of the engravers.

Please do not post anything in this thread before doing some research.

I agree that posting images of non-engraved stamps is inappropriate, and that information about engravers is a plus, but not that failure to track down and show the engraver's name can or should be forbidden.

We all make mistakes and get confused at times so don't feel too bad about it. I'm a bit of a fanatic about engraved stamps but I still like seeing others. As was suggested, perhaps you could start a thread of stamps that appeal to you.

As for engraver names, for older stamps you could try my website at engravedstamps.net but I haven't caught up with most of the recent ones. To find out more about the engravers and their work you might find Adrian Keppel's blog fascinating at https://stampengravers.blogspot.com/

It's all a learning curve and stamps are a great way to learn about many things.

We should definitely fix that. Here are a few to start.

Reconstruction of the tomb of Avicenna – Iran (I)

I like very much the earlier stamps of Iran show the rich culture and mythology and the old history of Persia and the Persian people. To raise donations to the reconstruction of the tomb of the Persian physician and philosopher Avicenna (980-1037), Iran issued five sets of five semi-postal stamps each show old Persian art and archaeological places. The stamps were engraved by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., London and issued in years 1948-1954.

Here is the first set issued on January 30, 1948. In the next post I will show the second set:
