For the first time ever I've been looking at all 24 pages. Wowsie!
I'm busy with a new and very exciting engravers project which I can't tell you about yet, but I so want to!
Anyway, here's my latest addition, issued in Yugoslavia in 1923, printed by the ABNC, no engraver mentioned in my catalogue...

AKPhilately - I agree: Every single page in this thread is chock full of great stamp images.

Here are a couple more folktale-themed stamps, from Scandinavia.

- nethryk

Sigurd Fafnesbane, dragonslayer, receives the sword "Graum" from the smith Regin, engraved by Henry Welde, and issued by Norway on January 20, 1976, Scott No. 669, Facit No. 751. The design motif is from the portal of Hylestad stave church.

Image

Image

The Little Mermaid, engraved by Arne Kühlmann, and issued by Denmark on February 16, 1989, Scott No. 865, Facit No. 970. The design is, of course, from the world-famous statue sculpted by Edvard Eriksen.

jugoslavija_post - Most of the better engraved stamps in my collection are housed in black Leuchtturm/Lighthouse Vario stock sheets and stored in binders; generally, I scan stamps directly from their individual stock sheets.

Here are some images of an old Spanish Official stamp that may interest jjarmstrong47 and a few other Stampboarders. Because of the engraving style, I suspect that this stamp was printed at one of the major London shops (Waterlow & Sons?), but I don't have any substantive proof.

National Library, issued by Spain on April 22, 1916, Scott No. O14.

That's such a gorgeous stamp, Nethryk!
It was printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson and engraved by E. Vaquer.

AKPhilately - Thanks! Following up on your tip, I found that, according to Gene Hessler (author of The International Engraver's Line), while at BW Enrique Vaquer also engraved banknotes for Spain and Portugal in the 1920s and 30s. BW engraver Christopher D. Broadbridge, an admirer, said that Vaquer "engraved with such spontaneous energy while keeping everything under tight control. A freedom of an artistic mind coupled with exquisite engraver work." (p. 288)

Are stamp engravers' names and printing house information for stamps routinely available in the SG catalogue? If so, I'll definitely have to get myself a set! Facit does an excellent job in this regard for Nordic stamps. In Scott catalogues, however, printing houses are sometimes listed, but not consistently, and individual engravers' names are rarely (never?) mentioned. Y&T is rather stingy on details, too.

Here is another "building" stamp I like, created in a completely different style.

- nethryk

P.S. My worldwide stamp engravers spreadsheet count now stands at 335.

Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by France on July 20, 1949, Scott No. 630, Y&T No. 841A.

Yes, SG is quite good in that respect. I think that, where known, the engraver is usually mentioned. Otherwise it just says "recess de la rue" or something of that ilk. But you have to go for the "parts" catalogues. The Stamps of the World catalogue does not give such details.
I use the parts to make my own database, which now has 123 engravers, and I'm still not beyond the British Commonwealth catalogues (but I did cheat and have done a few European countries as well).
It will be fun to compare our work when it's done!

AKPhilately - Thanks for mentioning that caveat about the SG Stamps of the World catalogues. You may well have saved me a bundle of cash and much disappointment. I will be sure to only purchase the SG "Parts" catalogues.

Enough of these static old buildings. Here are some "swinging" guys who are much more my style. As they sing in the movie, with the weekend here at last, "I like to move it move it..." :D

This set of three airmail stamps was designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by Malagasy on December 9, 1961.

stallzer, there is a "classic dignity" to old U.S. material that I just love.

nethryk, if you ever get the chance to come to Leamington, Ontario in the summer, you'll see the egrets and the Great Blue Herons and the Green Herons and the Night Herons, and the Kingfishers, and etc., etc., etc., . eagles, buteos, vultures, etc., etc., etc. Bluebirds and finches and chickadees and orioles and waxwings and hummingbirds and tanagers and etc., etc. etc.
Come one summer with binoculars and a camera and blow yourself away.
You're not too far to make it an accesible trip.

I wonder if the thinking behind ½ height airmail stamps was to cumulatively save load weight over thousands of letters.

Marcel - Superb stamps! The headhunter's menacing mien is priceless. John Augustus Charles Harrison was certainly one of the greatest stamp engravers of all time.

Here are some images of a stamp featuring another sourpuss, Royal Veterinary College founder P.C. Abildgaard (1740-1801), engraved by Czeslaw Slania, and issued by Denmark on March 22, 1973, Scott No. 519, Facit No. 567. Despite his disdainful look, I'm sure Abildgaard tended to be much kinder to people and other living things than Murat the Merciless was.

Lundy - Nice stamp. Louis Eugène Mouchon (1843-1914) is probably best remembered for his classic engraving of the original La Semeuse de Roty, a design used on French definitive stamps from 1903 to 1906. Subsequently, Mouchon's engraving was copied and re-engraved by others on additional definitives until 1941. It is a pity that during Mouchon's heyday as an engraver France's stamps were routinely printed by typography rather than by recess line engraving.

With today's momentous events in Egypt in mind, here are some images of an airmail stamp with an ancient Egyptian motif, Ramses II and Nefertari, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by Ivory Coast on March 7, 1964, Scott No. C27.

P.S. Murut - Sorry I misspelled your name earlier. Please don't lose your head over it!

The set of nine Third Reich semi-postal stamps, shown above, were issued to publicize Ships. The surtax was for Winter Relief charities.

By denomination, from lowest to highest, they depict a lifeboat, light ship "Elbe I", fishing smacks, a steamer, a sailing vessel, the "Tannenberg", sea train "Schwerin", the "S.S. Hamburg", and the "S.S. Bremen", not necessarily shown / posted in that order.

The 40 + 35 Pf. is actually an error. The inscription below the design indicates the "S.S. Bremen", however the ship pictured on the stamp is actually the "S.S. Europa"

I do have the missing one but it has a facial thin so I decided not to post it since it it really does make it look bad.

The name at the bottom of the Stamps is Werner Von Axster-Heudtlass, he is a famous German artist but I do not know if he did the actual engraving or if they are just based upon his works.
