How bad a nicely engraved design can be damaged!

At the left the stamp engraved by René Cottet, at the right its modification:

The screen points still had been nicely "engraved" - or rather etched photomechanically :D

Rein - Your Luxembourg stamp's "modification" is indeed shocking.

Here are images of a stamp, also nicely engraved by René Cottet, that features an exotic critter. Giant Pangolin (a scaly anteater) was issued for use in French West Africa on May 2, 1955, Scott No. 63.

Here are a couple of recent Canadian engraved examples which I find very well done.

Canada Post has issued very few engraved stamps in the last 20 years even though Canadian Bank Note (one of the 2 Canadian security printers) apparently bought a new printing press specifically for multicolour intaglio a couple of years back. Since CBNC also prints banknotes I suppose it is mainly used for that purpose.

KevinHedley - Here are some images of another Andorra stamp I'm pretty sure you will like, too. Golden Eagle was engraved by Pierre Forget (1923-2005), and issued on May 27, 1972, Scott No. 212.

Tomorrow is a USA federal holiday in celebration of George Washington's birthday (actually February 22) which has been officially observed on the third Monday of February since 1968. Generally, government employees, including postal workers and public school teachers, get the day off; however most other working stiffs, other than the fat cats on Wall Street, don't. Many states that had formerly observed Abraham Lincoln's birthday (February 12) have created a joint holiday to honor both Lincoln and Washington, sometimes calling it "Presidents Day," coinciding with the federal holiday. There has never been an annual federal holiday honoring Lincoln.

Here are some images of a couple of USA stamps featuring nicely engraved portraits of these two great American presidents.

During the 1950s Denmark issued many attractive stamps much coveted by my youthful self and by my collecting friends. Among them were two series of five stamps each issued in celebration of the millennium of the Danish kingdom. All ten stamps were engraved by Bent Jacobsen; several were designed by noted artist Viggo Bang, based on original drawings he made of various national landmarks. Here are images of the first set of five stamps.

While I realize that I may be just a wee bit tardy in mentioning Ludwig van Beethoven's 240th birthday (December 16, 2010), how else was I to introduce these engraved beauties that were issued in honor of his 200th?

Nethryk, I know most people here seem to regard Slania as the greatest Engraver and his works are absolutely beautiful. But every piece I see by Pierre Gandon I believe is in the same class as the Slania pieces. The Monaco Beethoven to me is another example of why IMHO he is every bit as talented as any Engraver I have seen. Please keep them coming...

It's not immediately obvious from the scan that this stamp is partly recess-printed, but it really is, although I had to check the stamp itself time and again to really convince myself that it is.

Image

This is a 1972 UN airmail stamp, printed in litho and recess (red spiro [is that a word?] bits) by the Government Printing Works in Tokyo.
My SG catalogue only mentions the designer (Lyell Dolan, of Australian banknote portraits fame), so could anybody maybe, hopefully, tell me who actually engraved it?

AKPhilately - Sorry, but the name of the engraver of your 1972 UN airmail stamp is not listed in the Scott US Specialized Catalogue, either.

Here are images of another "geometric" stamp: Tridimensional Design by Victor Vasarely, engraved by Jean Pheulpin, and issued by France on April 8, 1977, Scott No. 1519, Y&T No. 1924.

PS I am now up to 409 individual stamp engravers on my Excel spreadsheet, and still going strong. :D

The shape of the boat's sail on your stamp reminded me of this masterpiece: Arrival of Sainte Dévote at Monaco, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by Monaco on January 27, 1944, Scott No. B84, SG No. 301.

jugoslavija_post - Now that's what I'm talking about. Very sweet.

Your Arms of Jamaica stamps reminded me of this one: President Nord-Alexis, engraved and printed by M.E. Côte, Paris, and issued by Haiti in 1904, Scott No. 101, SG No. 141. (Also, the gal on the right kind of reminds me of a certain free-spirited young lady friend I once took to a Caribbean island-themed fraternity party back in my university days.) :D
