My homemade 800x600 pixel images usually have 4-6 times as many kilobytes as theirs do. Also, I generally scan single engraved stamps at 1200 dpi (and even higher for detailed close-ups.)
For comparison to Pierre Albuisson's stamp above, here are some images of Danish chinaware on stamps engraved by Czeslaw Slania and issued by Denmark on May 22, 1975.
