Not quite sure what they are though if I were to hazard a guess I'd say Blue Wrens.

Jon
And you would be right - officially Superb Fairy Wrens but we call them Jenny Wrens and there is a family in my backyard.

JonEboy - I would readily agree with you that Pierre Gandon's work on these Gabon birds stamps is outstanding. Consider how well balanced the design elements are on each stamp, and how expertly they have been executed in terms of both line and color. Pure magic!

Here is an image of the remaining value from this airmail set, depicting a couple of blue-headed bee-eaters (Merops muelleri, aka Mellitophagus mülleri), designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by Gabon on October 7, 1961, Scott No. C15.

The Saint Helena Plover (Charadrius sanctaehelenae) is locally known as the Wirebird because of its thin legs. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a Wirebird, engraved and printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co., Ltd., and issued for use in St. Helena on August 4, 1953, Scott No. 145, plus a photo of one of this wader species.

Aah, thanks nethryk. That was six months before I even joined the boards! I thought I hadn't seen them and that would be why...

I've just been putting together a series of frames for a local exhibition and it was 'Birds on Line Engraved stamps' so I've been scanning a lot. I'm therefore hoping that these haven't been seen before.

From Austria 1950 the famous Airs set here's the first value of 60 Groschen, "Rooks" designed by M. Strohofer and engraved by H.Woyty. SG 1215.

Image

Jon

(I'm hoping the rest of the set haven't had an airing as they are already scanned! OK, so I've found the Black headed gulls on p14 but the others seem notable by their absence)

Fabulous bird Kevin and by chance I saw my first one this year. Walking through a forest in Southern Spain I came out into a clearing and one popped up right in front of me. They are even better in real life!

If less common elsewhere, the falcon is a common theme in Middle East stamps, this example - the top value of a set of 8 of the same image - is a particularly good example (Kuwait Michel 292):

I know that nethry posted a copy of this a couple of pages back but I'm claiming this is different as his was used!

Once again our old friends M. Strohofer and H.Woyty are responsible for this beauty.

Fourth in the Austrian 1950 Airs, SG 1218 are the 3 Schilling Cormorants in flight. These lovely birds regularly fly over my house and are a sight to behold.

Image

A change in the line up this time; still designed by H. Strohofer (apologies for earlier typo referring to him as M. Strohofer  - Hans became Markus for a moment there!) but this time engraved by F.Teubel about whom I can find very little information. Anyone know anything about this person?

I put F Teubel into a search engine and came up with Friedrich Teubel (1884-1965) Austria. No mention of stamp design, but engraving features in his output.

JonEboy - Nice stamp! Friedrich Teubel (1884-1965) was an Austrian military officer who studied at the Academy of Graphic Art in Vienna under Professor Alfred Cossman. Teubel was also an architect, etcher and commercial designer. He engraved a number of stamps for Austria. I have posted images of several of them here at Stampboards, and elsewhere.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting the head of a Swedish Dwarf Chicken, designed after a photograph by C. Newton, engraved by Lars Sjööblom, and issued by Sweden on January 2, 1995, Scott No. 2054, Facit No. 1878.

Thanks for the info on Teubel nethryk, that's more than was available when I went looking!

Fifth in the Austrian 1950 Airs, SG 1219 the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo), but translated into German as the 'Maus bussard', presumably due to their most common food source.
Image

This one is again attributed to H. Strohofer and H.Woyty. For some reason this is my least favourite stamp in the set, probably due to the angle of the right wing which seems improbable.

Another beautiful study of a bird in flight, by a skilled artist. I think the shape of the right wing works if you note the bird's head turned to the right, with the body level....

JonEboy - You're welcome. And another nice stamp. In my opinion, Hubert Woyty-Wimmer (1901-1972) was also a fine Austrian engraver.

Short-tailed Albatross or Steller's Albatross (Phoebastria albatrus, aka Diomedea albatrus), combined engraved and photogravure, and issued by Japan on January 16, 1975, Scott No. 1199, plus a photo of one of these sea birds and its chicks. Note the precision with which the birds are rendered in this stamp's design, a characteristic of many of Japan's stamps depicting animals. More to follow...

Last in the set and a cracker, SG 1221 the 20 Schilling and an astonishing portrait of the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos)

For some reason they abandoned poor old Hubert Woyty-Wimmer for this last stamp and whilst keeping with H. Strohofer they opted for the talents of Herbert Toni Schimek to complete this last stamp.

Not a bad set :D
