Post by snaws »

Most collectors of Western Australian Stamps would be aware of the sale of Lord Vestey's Western Australia Stamps by Spink on 19th May 2015.

This is one of the best collections of Western Australia ever formed, I thought this might be a good place to record the sale highlights of this fabulous collection.

The Sale consisted of 669 lots with a presale Estimate of £ 873,888.00 to £ 1,094,730.00 Total sales were
£ 903,805.00 before the 20% Buyers premium was added, making £ 1,084,566.00, There were 55 Unsold lots of the 669 offered.

All prices below show the 20% commission added but do not show the VAT fees as Imported lots are not charged VAT which for this sale added 4% to the total for local purchasers.

A$ prices I have simply doubled the price realised in £. The Exchange rate I paid on the day I paid my invoice was A$1 = 0.4748pence.

You can do your own maths if 2 to 1 is not good enough.

Yes as I posted elsewhere earlier today -

So one thing certainly has changed, Arthur Woo and Lord Vestey certainly have moved the goalposts in regards to exhibiting Western Australia.
Image
Western Australia 1854 4d Blue Swan "Inverted Frame" stamp FU just sold for around $A250,000
Sold for £122,400 at Lord Vestey sale of May 19 - around $A250,000. More than DOUBLE their top estimate of £50,000-£60,000.

It is a world record price for ANY single stamp from Australasia, from 1850, to the present day.

The 1928 Imperforate Kookaburra Miniature Sheet at $A326,000, and the unissued block 6 of the 2d red KEVIII stamp at $A500,000 (also ex Vestey) got more in dollars, but have 4 or 6 stamps in them.

The Arthur Gray Imprint block 4 of the £1 Kangaroo shown nearby was invoiced at $A265,000 in 2007, but again is 4 stamps, and not one.

The stamp I understand was again bought by retired Hong Hong physician, Dr Woo, adding to his fistful of these stamps. He now owns near all the examples not in institutions and Museums.

Woo’s tally, among many other examples now, includes the “forged” example sold in 1980s by Christies in the “Isleham” collection for £31,000, that some opinion now seems to lean to NOT being forged, and the damaged strip of 3 x 4d used stamps showing part of an inverted frame on one!

In December 1942 this 4d Swan was bought by the original Lord Vestey for the princely sum of £850 by Private Treaty from Robson Lowe. Some 73 years later, it achieved a World Record price of £122,400 - near enough to $A250,000 when conversion charges are added,

I was having a drink with Richard Juzwin at Arthur Gray's funeral last week, and he'd just got back from London from the auction. He bought the part sheet of the 1854 1d Black Swan, and the 4d Swan sheet as I recall him telling me.

The WA prices were incredibly strong Richard told me, even for "bad and butter" basic WA stamp items, and said the SG valuations on WA in next SG will increase widely as a result of this sale.

About time - to this day I sell presentable used 1854 1d Black Swans, SG #1, for under $A100, so the time is long overdue for some price movement UP!

Ha!

An old friend.

Vestey bought this off me from my mid 1982 ASM ad for $A5,500 ... more than a 10 times rise since then.

Indeed I had paid a lot less than $5,500 ex Feldman Switzerland, when Rodney Perry was having a bit of a fire sale at that time, due to divorce or other matters etc.

Good pieces do well in strong markets. :)

Lot 40 1d Black Rouletted pair used with Void Grid red cancel of Perth on cover to Guildford 5 June 1855.

Estimate £ 6,000-8,000 Realised £ 3,500.00 + 20% comm. £ 4,200.00 or A$ 8,400.00

Although this cover has great Provenance, Being in the Burrus, Gartner & Austin ( Du Pont) Collections, The poor result was likely that the stamps are not tied to the cover, It came with a B.P.A Certificate.
