A Month's Mind is a requiem mass celebrated about one month after a person's death, in memory of the deceased. In medieval & later England, it was a service & feast held one month after the death of anyone in his or her memory. It is still an almost universal practice in Ireland (for Roman Catholics) for the family of the deceased & close friends to attend mass & take a meal together on the occasion of the month's mind.

May 29, 2017 will of course be the 100th Birthday of JFK. It will be interesting to see what the US Post Office will bring out to commemorate this event.

Artmaster's cachet began in 1946. The company was founded by Bob & Mary Schmidt at home (dare I say "in the Schmidt house") & still owned by the family. They are printed by offset usually in one or two colours. Usually on the reverse there is a short biography or description of the stamp subject. Early covers were only in one colour.

The first inauguration of Lyndon B. Johnson as the 36th President of the United States was held on Friday, November 22, 1963 aboard Air Force One at Love Field in Dallas, Texas, following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy earlier that day. The inauguration marked the commencement of the first term (a partial term of 1 year, 59 days) of Lyndon B. Johnson as President. This was the eighth non-scheduled, extraordinary inauguration to take place since the presidency was established in 1789.

The second inauguration of Lyndon B. Johnson as the 36th President of the United States was held on January 20, 1965. The inauguration marked the commencement of the second (only full) term of Lyndon B. Johnson as President & the only term of Hubert Humphrey as Vice President. Chief Justice Earl Warren administered the Oath of office. Lady Bird Johnson founded the tradition of First Ladies participating in the ceremony by holding the President's Bible.

"All the way with LBJ" was the 1964 U.S. Presidential campaign slogan of Lyndon B. Johnson:

I rather like the combination of the Project Mercury & JFK stamps, due to JFK's involvement with the "Space Race" & both being of National Importance.

Sokol – the falcon, is a bird who, by his swiftness & energy, symbolizes the active, vigorous, strenuous, real Spartan life, which is the ideal of Sokol programs.

The first Sokol unit was founded on February 14, 1865, in St. Louis, Missouri by three men: Karel Prochazka, Jaroslav Vostrovsky & E.B Erban. Within a few years Sokol units were formed in Chicago, New York, Baltimore, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cedar Rapids, Omaha, etc. Since then they have expanded from the Atlantic to the Pacific & from Canada to the Rio Grande. This was the age of heavy immigration. Next to the building of their own homes, they ached for community centres where they could carry on the many sided training of their young. This they did out of their own hard earned resources. They instinctively felt that in this way they were repaying at least in part their debt of gratitude.

“Ask not what you can get from your country, but what you can do for it. I appreciate the part the American Sokol Movement has played in establishing physical fitness & good sportsmanship as major objectives of recreation, education and our way of life. In years to come, I hope American Sokol’s example will inspire millions more to join in this pursuit of excellence.”

– President John F. Kennedy

Souvenir cachet for Washington Local Post. I can find nothing specific on this particular local post but as discussed previously these local post services are prolific & do not actually represent a postal service of any kind. Local post stamps can be sent through the US postal service as long as there is a valid US stamp paying the correct rate on the cover. However in this case we are ok as JFK (Scott 1246) is here & there is no local post stamp. JFK is cancelled with the a nice Washington D.C straight line machine cancel. Presumably the cover is dated July 12, 1965, for the third anniversary of JFK's speech on tax reform: "Couples depreciation reform with tax credits to spur greater investment in Plant & Machinery."

Gemini 5 (officially Gemini V) was a 1965 manned spaceflight in NASA's Gemini program. It was the third manned Gemini flight, the eleventh manned American flight, & the nineteenth spaceflight of all time, including two X-15 flights above 100 kilometres. It was also the first time an American manned space mission held the world record for duration, set on August 26, 1965, by breaking the Soviet Union's previous record set by Vostok 5 in 1963.

Gemini 5 doubled the U.S space-flight record of the Gemini 4 mission to eight days, the length of time it would take to fly to the Moon, land & return. This was possible due to new fuel cells that generated enough electricity to power longer missions, a pivotal innovation for future Apollo flights, instead of the chemical batteries used on previous manned spacecraft. Cooper & Conrad were to have made a practice space rendezvous with a "pod" deployed from the spacecraft. Command Pilot & Mercury veteran Gordon Cooper was the first person to fly two Earth orbital missions.

Crew:
Command Pilot - L Gordon Cooper Jr.
Pilot - Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr

Back Up Crew:
Command Pilot - Neil A Armstrong
Pilot - Elliot M See

Support Crew:
Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin
Neil A. Armstrong
Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom
James A. McDivitt

Some famous names of the future listed above there!

A small history on Gordon Cooper referred to in the previous post:

Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper, Jr. (March 6, 1927 – October 4, 2004), (Col, USAF), better known as Gordon Cooper, was an American aerospace engineer, test pilot, United States Air Force pilot, & one of the seven original astronauts in Project Mercury, the first manned space program of the U S.

Cooper piloted the longest & final Mercury spaceflight in 1963. He was the first American to sleep in space during that 34-hour mission & was the last American to be launched alone to conduct an entirely solo orbital mission. In 1965, Cooper flew as Command Pilot of Gemini 5.

Cooper was launched into space on May 15, 1963, aboard the Mercury-Atlas 9 (Faith 7) spacecraft, the last Mercury mission. He orbited the Earth 22 times & returned to earth on May 16, 1963.

B'nai B'rith International ("Children of the Covenant") is the oldest Jewish service organization in the world. B'nai B'rith states that it is committed to the security & continuity of the Jewish people & the State of Israel & combating antisemitism & bigotry. Its mission is to unite persons of the Jewish faith & to enhance Jewish identity through strengthening Jewish family life, to provide broad-based services for the benefit of senior citizens, & to facilitate advocacy & action on behalf of Jews throughout the world. The B'nai B'rith International awards the Presidential Gold Medal every few years to honor the recipient's commitment to the Jewish people & the State of Israel. JFK was a recipient of that medal.

The John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site is the birthplace & childhood home of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the U S, located at 83 Beals Street in the Coolidge Corner neighborhood of Brookline, Massachusetts. The property is now owned by the National Park Service; tours of the house are offered, & a film is presented.

The Kennedy home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, & was established as a National Historic Site on May 26, 1967.
