Australian Replica Cards - Visual Reference

Post by jaywalker »

Replica cards are reproductions of intaglio or recess printed Australian {or Australian Antarctic Territory} stamps using original stamp dies. Since the stamp images on the replica cards are the equivalent of proofs from the original dies, details of the designs are reproduced in sharper images than those archived on the issued stamps.

These steel dies were engraved by hand at actual stamp size - an artistic feat requiring an exceptional degree of skill.

Cards fund the Australian Philatelic Federation (APF). Revenue from the sales of stamp replica cards will pass to the APF, known previously as the Australian Stamp Promotion Council. The APF has been granted exclusive rights to use the original steel dies to produce the stamp replica cards. {Early cards were sold by the APF for $4 each - later cards are now selling for $6 each from the APF}.

No Postal Validity. The stamp replica cards are philatelic souvenirs only and have no postal validity. Consequently, no first day of issue postmarking or any other type of postmarking will be permitted by Australia Post. {But see images below :mrgreen: }

(Source: Stamp News, June 1985 - article reproduced below)

As at 24 Feb 2014, there are 49 different cards, with plans for a 50th card to be released by Australia Post in 2015 (believed to be part of Anzac centenary - so likely to be a replica card of the 1965 "Simpson and Donkey" stamps that were also issued by Nauru, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and Norfolk Island).

Some cards were produced in limited numbers in black - provided to volunteers at Australian stamp shows, or as part of Supporters Packs.

Recent cards are still available for sale from the Australian Philatelic Federation website at http://www.apf.org.au/products.htm, but are progressively withdrawn.

Reference Numbers (SRC "prefixes" are those provided by Seven Seas Stamps (in the Australasian Stamp Catalogue Volume 1: Australia and Territories, or assumed as a logical extension). The Seven Seas Catalogue provides catalogue values, which are not recorded here. Buy the catalogue!

Seven Seas Stamps ( https://sevenseas.com.au/ ) produced an album and inserts for these Replica Cards - but it is understood that they ceased making inserts circa 2001 (SRC 1 - SRC 40), and in 2014 they are out of stock.

"Australian Stamp Replica Card Album" Binders and Slipcases are still being sold by Seven Seas Stamps (at $22 each). The binders are the 25mm capacity binders.

First card (SRC 1) - March 1984 (released at Ausipex 84 in March 1984) - 1914 Unissued 2d King George V, 1/- Swan

Image
AUSIPEX 84

Unissued Australian Stamps 1914

These two stamps were prepared for use and were intended to be part of a series commenced with the issue of a 1d stamp featuring King George V and a 6d stamp depicting a kookaburra, issued in 1913 and 1914 respectively. However the outbreak of World War I and other factors caused the series to be terminated. Trial printings had been made of the 2d and 1/- stamps, but the two stamps were never issued. The above reproductions of the stamp designs have been produced using the original master dies.

Reproduced with special permission of Australia Post

Facsimile produced for AUISPEX 84
Note: SRC 1 and SRC 2 were numbered on the reverse.

SRC 1 was provided as an "insert" (Between front cover and "Page 1", adhered on LHS) into the AUSIPEX 84 Official Catalogue - image below.

There is an image of SRC 1 on Page 40 of the catalogue, and under the "AUSIPEX 84 Market Place" entry (ie, souvenirs for the show), SRC 1 is described as:
Original die reproductions of 2d King George V and 1/- Swan stamps, by courtesy of Australia Post, but not available for postage. (Both on one sheet.) Only obtainable from our office...$4.00 each.

The 20th Anniversary of the Anzac Landing at Gallipoli

Twenty years after the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops on Gallipoli, the Post office released a pair of stamps commemorating the event.

Returned servicemen's organizations were invited to suggest designs of a symbolic and non-military nature, which led to a submission by Mr. B. Cottier of Victoria showing the Whitehall Cenotaph in London surrounded by a laurel wreath.

The design was modified and engraved by F.D. Manley and the stamps were issued on 18 March 1935.

The reproductions are from original dies held in the archives of the Note Printing Branch, Reserve Bank of Australia.

OLYMPIC GAMES
3½d UNISSUED, 1956

Four stamps were produced in 1956 to celebrate the staging of the Melbourne Olympic Games - the first to be held in Australia. The two top values were Australia's first full-colour stamps.

Of the lower denominations, the 3½d, showing the Army of the City of Melbourne, was hastily re-engraved when the base postal rate changed to 4d shortly before the stamps were due to be issued.

This replica card presents a reproduction from the original unissued 3½d die held by Note Printing, Australia.

In 1992, a private overprint was done on SRC 24 by Noel Almeida ("nightwatchman" on Stampboards). Care was taken to match the orange colour of the die print (on the front of the card).

A steel letterpress block was used with a ‘Back to Australia Sydney 2000’ logo (originally developed for use on stationery). The card was sold for $15, and sold rapidly - mostly to overseas collectors.

A specimen of the logo is below (in bright red, printed on gloss card). On both the card and the specimen the logo has a diameter of 34mm.
Image

Noel Almeida has also used the design on a "two-colour" adhesive sticker, which also had a 34mm diameter:

AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL CANBERRA
In 1925, the Commonwealth Government passed an Act to erect a War Memorial in Canberra to house the national war relic collection initiated in 1917 by General Birdwood, General Officer Commanding, Australian Imperial Force. The Memorial was officially opened in 1941 and commemorates all wars in which Australian forces have served.
The Commemorative Stone and Garden Court with the central Pool of Reflection leading up to the central shrine - the Hall of Memory - was featured on two stamps issued on 10 February 1958. Distinguishing the two stamps are the symbolic figures skirting the courtyard scene. One shows a sailor and airman, and the other features a soldier and servicewoman. The illustrations represent the mosaics created by Melbourne artist, Napier Waller, which encrust the walls of the Hall of Memory commemorating World War 1 and the four services: the Navy, Army, Air Force and Women's Services.
The stamp was designed by artist-engravers of the Note Printing Branch, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Melbourne. The stamps were issued in sheets of 80 and printed alternatively within the sheet.

The Canberra Stamp Show 2014 overprinted 100 x War Memorial replica cards with the Exhibition logo, and numbered from 1 to 100.

98 were available for sale at $10 each from 14 Mar 2014.

No 1 and No 100 are to be auctioned at the Awards Dinner Auction (on 15 Mar 2014), with the proceeds being split between the two Scout groups that assisted the exhibition in putting up and pulling down the frames. The money raised will be used for activities by the groups, which in the past has included work in a village in Lombok in Indonesia.

COBB & CO AND THE COASHING ERA IN AUSTRALIA

The stamp design reproduces Sir Lionel Lindsay's etching Cobb & Co, which depicts a coach on the Western Australian goldfields during the 1890s. On 6 July 1955 two recess-printed stamps, engraved by Frank Manley, were issued to commemorate pioneers of the coaching era: 3½d sepia (33,981,120 issued) and 2/- warm brown (2,295,600 issued).

Cobb & Co was very prominent in pioneering coaching services. Its operations commenced late in 1853 when four Americans, headed by Freeman Cobb, Set up in Melbourne. The firm flourished in Victoria, News South Wales and Queensland by securing extensive mail contracts. In 1924 the last Cobb & Co. coach was taken off the road in southern Queensland.

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL, 1955

The world's first Rotary club was founded in Chicago in February 1905. The organisation's aims included "the furtherance of better understanding and goodwill between the peoples of different nations." Rotary had its beginnings in Australia in 1921, following the creation of clubs in Melbourne and Sydney. When the organisation was 50 years old in 1955, Rotary clubs were operating in over 200 Australian cities and towns.

The 50th anniversary of Rotary International was marked by a 3d stamp issued on 23 February 1955. Although many countries issued stamps for the occasion, Australia was the only Commonwealth country to do so. The 1955 Australian stamp was designed and engraved by Donald Cameron, and recess-printed at the note Printing Branch, Melbourne. The total issued was 36,358,000, representing about one month's sale.

The Stamp Replica Card is released to mark Pacific Explorer 2005, staged in Sydney, which coincides with the centenary year of Rotary International.

CENTENARY OF RAILWAYS IN AUSTRALIA, 1954

The centenary of the first steam railway in Australia, which operated between Melbourne and Port Melbourne (then called Sandridge), was commemorated by a stamp depicting the contrast of old and new forms of locomotives.

The stamp design was the work of Melbourne artist, Ralph Warner, who based it on an initial sketch submitted to the Post Office by the Victorian Railways. Warner's design features the original type of locomotives used in Victoria in 1854 and a modern diesel-electric engine. The modern locomotive was generally typical of those running on Commonwealth and State railway systems of the day. The stamp die was engraved by George Lissenden of the Note Printing Branch, Melbourne.

The Stamp Replica card has been released to coincide with Melbourne Stampshow 2009
The card was sold for $5.00 at the Melbourne Stampshow 2009.
