Show your Aust Post Shield covers used after Feb 11, 1970

Post by BigSaint »

Another thread started to showed a few of these so I thought it appropriate to have a dedicated thread. Here are a few of mine but I will have to retrieve some albums from the Genesis planet to show more.

These cachets were the generic Australian Post Office design from about 1964 till February 1970, after which Australia Post produced pictorial covers for each new stamp issue. They came in long & short format as well as many different colours & some tried to collect all the colours.

So I will start with these from the Captain Cook issue of 20th April 1970:

Registered - Kalamunda WA to Mundaring WA
Kalamunda is about 25 kms east of Perth with Perth Airport in between. Mundaring is about 15 kms north east of Kalamunda.

These place were not out of the way places so should have had the "new" pictorial fdcs.

Coming up Didge & still with Cook but this time AAT, where in the early to the mid 1970's the AAT Australia Post pictorial fdcs were not available on the Mainland only at the AAT Bases:

The Penguin Parade at Phillip Island pictorial postmark with AAT Penguin Stamps, a great tie in:

Shield covers were perfect for pictorial postmark collectors. Unfortunately this is not first day of use.
Here is Colleen Woolley's write up from Oz Pictormarks.

As a collector of AAT fdcs & the Australian Mainland was where the AAT stamp was first issued I collected every different cachet by every different cachet maker. I could not then & still don't now subscribe that "AAT Base fdcs" were fdcs. It was ridiculous that a stamp was in fact having 5 first days of issue.

However I did collect the first day of use of the AAT Aust Post pictorial cachet. It was usually MacQuarrie Island but not always. That's another story & on another thread.

We all know Expo 70 (16th March 1970) was the first of the decimal Australia Post pictorial cachet fdcs. Here is the Shield version for that issue:

As you can see from the previous posts, not only were the shields different colours & the cover different sizes, sometimes the shield was not shaded in & sometimes it was.

For the coils I have these different colours of the unshaded design:

Before Feb 1970 sometimes, but since then I have tried but I thought the prices on them were too steep. I looked at the prices on ebay recently & I though they were ridiculous.

Folks,

Before moving on, there is another collecting difference with late shield covers. I think postcodes were introduced in Australia in 1969. My first shield cover with a postcode is the ILO 5c Issue of 4 June 1969. The envelope without a postcode became scarce after this date. So a collector who was extremely keen could try and collect all of the different envelopes with and without postcodes. Obviously the longer after the introduction date the scarcer non-postcode envelopes became. Four of my Expo covers are postcode varieties and one is a non-postcode.

Attached is a scan of both types.

Folks,

Small issues on long envelopes are rare as they could easily fit onto a small envelope and that's the way most collectors did them. Its a shame this only has the 5 cent on it but its still a very nice shield. No-postcode as well making it rarer still.

Folks,

The Cook issue because of its nature is more common on long envelopes. The 30 cent on a small envelope is rare. Its much rarer than its much lauded Post Office issue. I have one. Its a postcode envelope. I have four of the full set on long envelopes. They are all no-postcard issues. I have already posted the 30 cent on a small cover so will only post the four long envelopes.

I don't like the composition of the stamps on this envelope as much as the previous one. The stamp covering the shield is not as well thought out I don't think.
