Your contributions to be added to the Kangaroo and Map WIKIS

Post by PhilipAdams »

In the WIKI forum, there are separate WIKI threads for each of the Kangaroo and Map denominations.

For the ½d green – https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=18421
For the 1d red –https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=87758
For the 2d grey – https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=18594

and so on.

Contributions consist of images of single individual subjects/clichés that have constant and plated flaws. Thus, for example, in the 1d Kangaroo and Map WIKI for the position BL6 (the sixth stamp from the left pane of plate B) there is the following entry

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?p=5732296#p5732296

Up to now, the practice has been to place images at the bottom of a WIKI, on the assumption that someone would move the image to the correct location. There has been no standardisation, nor quality control.

Past postings have sometimes been speculative and even just prose, which distract from the original purpose of the WIKI.

Now, it is requested that new images be posted to this thread, which will act as a staging point. Postings should include any information relating to plating, including the plate number, pane and position on that pane.

All appropriate images will be moved to the relevant WIKI location. The original posting to this thread will remain.

SCANS

Ideally, two or more images per stamp should be posted: one of the full stamp at 1200 dpi, and one or more of the area(s) around the flaw/variety marker at some higher resolution.

In the words of GUTTERS,
A bit of pride in the scan of your stamp will keep it here for as long as the board stays running.
EXAMPLE

The following post came from david3461 to "Flaws on Aust Kangaroo Stamps? Help from the experts please". It is a good example of what should be included here.

A number of the Kangaroo and Map WIKIs are well populated. Of interest to me are:

½d green – https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=18421
1d red – https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=87758

But there remain many gaps - plate positions with known constant flaws, but no images.

Below are the gaps that I'm aware of in the current ½d and 1d WIKIs. It would be great if some of these gaps could be filled.

====================
For the green, plate positions:
1L1
1L7
1L16
1L23 (first state)
1L25
1L26
1L32
1L34
1L35 (first state)
1L39
1L40
1L44
1L46
1L51
1L53
1L55
2L3 (first state)
2L6 (second state)
2L8
2L48 (first state)
2R12
2R16
2R17
2R20
2R25
2R29
2R39
2R40
2R44

====================
For the red, plate positions:
Anything to do with plate A (with a few exceptions)
BL37 (first state)
BL54 (second state)
BR23 (first state)
CR4 (first state)
CR23
CR47
Anything to do with plate D (with a few exceptions)
ER20
ER31
ER38
Anything to do with the remaining plates - F, G, H and K.

The 1/- blue/green WIKI has one posting. Yet Kainnikanda's research topic is rich with images of constant flaws that he (primarily) and others have plated.

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=27086.

In that topic there is a description of the following flaw, along with several images. Read this if further information is required.

However, for WIKI purposes here is a clean copy on Second watermark paper, with a N.W./PACIFIC/ISLANDS overprint.

Great idea to tidy these up. :)

Many thanks.

I am not quite sure why the data you see cannot be added to the 1d Roo or 1/- Roo EXISTING threads etc, and simply edited into the relevant plate positions in there?

Having them spread in 2 places seems to make no sense to me.

Glen

2L13 has this superb detail below there and 2L12 is blank. Why not add 2L12 scans when a member loads them to end of existing thread?

Personally, I think it's a really good idea.

- It gives complete control of the style & content of the individual topics.
- It will stop individual topics being overrun with general chat, imaginary flyspecking & people asking for confirmation of ID's/asking for flaws to be plated.
- The people responsible for the content of the individual topics don't have to check multiple sources for new additions - it's all in one place.

We have an equivalent thread for KGV Heads, now up to 76 pages, first started in 2008, which seems to work fine:

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=51288

In fact, I'd consider going as far as making a post at the end of each Roo Wiki directing people to this triage thread and then lock those threads so that only people with permitted moderator access can add/edit.

I can see both sides of the discussion.

IF we have helpful volunteers that DO move the posts here to the relevant Wikis, I agree it will work.

All the Wikis were set up 10-15 years back by a member called Amahzing who pushed and pushed for it, until I relented. She vanished soon after, and we had a ton of near empty shells! A real Ghost Town of a Forum in most part.

That is reality at times on Bulletin Boards.

Then we get some current WIKI threads like this - with 2000 empty posts -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=91733

If GUTTERS gets hit by a bus tomorrow, will those be populated - ever? I doubt it!

Not all members can or will offer superb sharp scans such as those shown by the Pom above.

With the new software, using the QUOTE button reduced the size enormously AND loses all the text typed underneath any attachment. i.e.

Here is the original size image The Pom posted above - huge difference in size

Image
2L10 "Scratch off coast at Albany"

So to take this to the relevant WIKI needs someone to click to make image full size, save that, save the caption, save the typed detail, and move it to the 2d Grey WIKI.

And as always for the google bot matching indexing - remembering that bots cannot "see" a thing in any image we must always - ALWAYS use the word STAMP in captions here ANYWHERE and on course in this kind of instance use the words 2d grey Kangaroo stamp - i.e.

1913 2d grey Kangaroo stamp variety - 2L10 "Scratch off coast at Albany"

expanded from

2L10 "Scratch off coast at Albany"

Can it be done technically - of course. Will it be done ... time will tell .. I do hope it works out!

IF we have helpful volunteers that DO move the posts here to the relevant Wikis, I agree it will work.
Not much different to the current setup of people posting images randomly at the end of individual threads & the volunteers moving them to the correct location in that particular Wiki.
Then we get some current WIKI threads like this - with 2000 empty posts -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=91733

If GUTTERS gets hit by a bus tomorrow, will those be populated - ever? I doubt it!
How else would you construct such a Wiki? If there's a more sensible way other than creating a space for each variety and putting images in those spaces as they become available, I'd like to hear it.

With the new software, using the QUOTE button reduced the size enormously AND loses all the text typed underneath any attachment.

So to take this to the relevant WIKI needs someone to click to make image full size, save that, save the caption, save the typed detail, and move it to the 2d Grey WIKI.
Exactly the same issue exists with the current setup of people posting images randomly at the end of individual threads & the volunteers moving them to the correct location in the Wiki.

You're looking for problems that aren't there, Glen. Moving things within threads or between threads? Much the same issues apply.

What's been happening in the Kangaroo WIKI world?

WIKIs for all four bi-colour issues are now ready and open for submissions

(for the 5/-) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=19540
All four WIKIs have a new introduction and an image of the normal stamp for later comparisons.

New contributions have been made to the following WIKIs

(½d green) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=18421

A nice example of the duty plate variety Broken coast in Bight has been posted on the newly created £1 brown and blue Kangaroo WIKI (see the first two images in the quoted portion below).

Off they go to the correct position in the WIKI, position R41 (could also be R53).

Hence: https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?p=6796335#p6796335

Also posted were a pair, the second of which appears to have a break in value circle at lower left. If so, then this would place it at R48 and the first stamp at R47. A spectacular piece, and worthy of a note at this stage in the WIKI.

These might find a home above!

The 1913 mint pair with broken value circle, I bought off Her Majesty The Queen.

The two stamps have a Royal Philatelic Society London, Expert Committee, Certificate of Genuineness which accompanied the lot. As you can see the submitter of the pair was: "The Keeper Of The Privy Purse" !!! The stamps come in the original special lot folder from Spink, inscribed "The Royal Philatelic Collection - May 17, 2001".

The stamps are from position 14 and 15 on the left pane. The RH stamp has the constant variety 51(D)L ($3,500) "Break In Value Circle At Left" - not noticed by RPSL. Believed unique in any kind of multiple, mint or used.

A while back so sadly old school scanner owned back then.

I'm adding this 10/- 1st watermark block to the wiki: R38-9, 44-5 & 50-1.

120.0d Roo MAF R38-9 44-5 50-1 -01 2400 2MP.jpg

The previous blocks, of which I posted scans, have been added to the wiki and all appropriate text augmented.
Looking for NSW cut-down relief date stamps, as seen in my avatar, to add to my collection.

A Plate 1 variety that occurs on all three Watermarks. Note that the ACSC currently incorectly recognises the flaw as occuring only on third watermark.

What's been happening in the Kangaroo WIKI world:
Update 17 September 2020

WIKIs for all four bi-colour issues are now ready and open for submissions
(for the £2) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=92029
(for the £1 brown and blue) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=92031
(for the 10/-) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=19807
(for the 5/-) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=19540
All four WIKIs have a new introduction and an image of the normal stamp for later comparisons.

The introduction to the 2/- maroon issue has been expanded, and a new section for stamps from the redrawn die has been created.
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=19539

New contributions have been made to the following WIKIs
(½d green) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=18421
(1d red) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=87758
(2d grey) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=18594
(1/- green) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=19021
(5/-) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=19540
(10/-) https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=19807

If you have material that can be used in the WIKIs, please do not hesitate to post. The material could be images or commentary including corrections. We only ask that you post first to this topic. All images will then be transferred to the relevant WIKI as quickly as possible.

Philip,

I've added scans of my 5/- 3rd watermarked roo block of 30 (L1-30) to the wiki. Will be gradually adding the text as time permits.

I'll also complete the missing scans from a 5/- 3rd watermark block of 30 from L31-60.

For clarity/legibility gradually I will also convert all my own scans of 5/- roos into blue and edit many of the scans where the yellow stamp and the varieties are difficult to see. Looks strange but is easier on the eyes.
Looking for NSW cut-down relief date stamps, as seen in my avatar, to add to my collection.

I've found a few more to add to the collection. Some of these may well already be in the Wiki's, but might be better scans.

Note regarding the 5/- wiki.

I've just completely revised the listing for 2nd watermarked 5/- L6 based on a 3rd watermarked example and a colourised view of the existing 5/- I posted several years ago.

Link is:

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=19540&p=745346#p745346

I could be revising numerous posts depending on what's seen on these 3rd watermarked blocks of 30 I am posting.

Viewing scans in original colours often obscures constant varieties found on the Duty plates. The vignettes are of a different colour and are quite visible.

Thanks, Rod and Phillip. Covid 19 has cut my source of material, so I've stopped accumulating and started sharing those I've found.
Phillip, does the absence of GH & K cliches in 1d reds mean you just haven't posted your examples yet? Because your A through F postings covered most I have.
