Having torn ourselves away from the shorebirds of the Coorong we continue south towards the Green Triangle and the seaside town of Kingston SE.

kevinh 127.jpg

'Kingston SE (formerly Kingston) is a town in the Australian state of South Australia located in the state's south-east coastline on the shores of Lacepede Bay. It is located about 240 kilometres (150 miles) southeast of the state capital of Adelaide and 138 kilometres (86 miles) north-west of the centre of the city of Mount Gambier. At the 2016 census, Kingston SE had a population of 1,648.'

Kingston town map
kevinh 128.gif

'Located approximately 300 kilometres south of Adelaide is the Limestone Coast's hidden gem, Kingston SE. Nestled on the picturesque waters of Lacepede Bay, you can experience some of the safest beaches in South Australia. The district is also home to many national parks, including the Butchers Gap Conservation Park, and the internationally renowned Coorong National Park.

Bask in Kingston's radiant sunsets, or relax on the long stretches of sandy shoreline. Take a self-guided walk through the town and visit the Big Lobster, the Kingston Pioneer Museum or climb 125 steps to the top of the historic Cape Jaffa Lighthouse.

The small seaside town is the perfect destination to holiday with your family.'

'The Big Lobster is a tourist attraction located in the town of Kingston SE, South Australia. Known locally as Larry the Lobster, the sculpture of a spiny lobster stands 17 metres tall, and is regarded as one of the most impressive of Australia's Big Things.

Designed and built by Paul Kelly for Ian Backler and Rob Moyse, it is made of steel and fibreglass and was intended to attract attention to the restaurant and visitor centre at which it is situated. The Big Lobster was opened on 15 December 1979 after six months of construction.'

Thanks for spending all the volunteer time fixing the images here Brad, which were hosted on near every site on the planet except stampboards.

ALL members are reminded AGAIN of what has been pointed out for FOUR months here -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=90770

Please do NOT add images via third party image hosting sites like IMGUR, photobucket, ImageShack, IMGBOX etc anymore. Any such images need to be manually converted by Volunteer Moderators, so they are preserved, wasting THEIR time, simply because you do not read!

I was hoping that the "SE" bit on the end of Kingston had a more interesting story that it actually does

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingston_SE

"The extension on its name is to distinguish Kingston in the South East (of South Australia) from another 'Kingston' in the state which is now officially named "Kingston On Murray". The extension was added in July 1940"

From Millicent, it is a short drive down the limestone coast to Tantanoola -- population about 250 people - but even that small, it has a Post Office!

I grew up and went to school in Mount Gambier, and drove through here with family to Adelaide, probably 100 times.

It is best known for the Tantanoola Caves ... huge limestone underground caves.

It is also well known globally for the Tantanoola Tiger .... a strange animal shot in late 19th Century.

A moth-eaten stuffed "Tiger" animal is on the bar of the pub of the same name there.

Cachet shows a monument for an equestrian feat by poet Adam Lindsay Gordon:

Adam Lindsay Gordon 1970 Booklet Pane stamp issued 16th November 1970.

In July 1864, Gordon performed the daring riding feat known as Gordon's Leap on the edge of the Blue Lake. A commemorative obelisk erected there has an inscription which reads:

"This obelisk was erected as a memorial to the famous Australian poet. From near this spot in July, 1864, Gordon made his famed leap on horseback over an old post and rail guard fence onto a narrow ledge overlooking the Blue Lake and jumped back again onto the roadway. The foundation stone of the Gordon Memorial Obelisk was laid on 8th July 1887.

Re. above I would say that the Mount Gambier Courthouse is also very much in the Georgian style. Interesting as by that date in GB the much more ornate Victorian architecture style was taking over.

I grew up in Mount Gambier, and family regularly drove to Adelaide and until now had never heard of a railway line!

It is about 450 km or a 5 hour drive, so it makes sense that before cars, it was needed.

I always learn something new each day on stampboards!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Gambier_railway_line

The Mount Gambier railway line was a railway line on the South Australian Railways network. Opened in stages from 1881, it was built to narrow gauge and joined Mount Gambier railway station, which was at that time the eastern terminus of a line to Beachport.

It connected at Naracoorte to another isolated narrow gauge line joining Naracoorte to Kingston SE, and to the broad gauge Adelaide-Wolseley line at Wolseley, at around the same time that was extended to Serviceton to become the South Australian part of the Melbourne–Adelaide railway.

There has been regular calls for its standardisation between Wolseley and Heywood since its closure over the past two decades, which was complicated by the severing of the two lines in 2015 and being located in separate states.

etc, etc.

Portland Trade Fair 7th to 9th August 1969 - APM #2780 to Windsor Victoria via McKinnon.

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks can tell us anything of this event, however I can tell you the first Portland Trade Fair was in 1966:

Malcolm Fraser was the local Federal member for Wannon & was given the Ministry of the Army in 1966, & the Fair was held from 4th to 6th August 1966. It is a 130 km trip from Fraser's home in Nareen to Portland.

Special Commemorative cover & postmark (APM #3024) for the Royal Visit to Portland 7th April 1970

It must have been a quick to Portland by Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles & Princess Anne as they were also in Swan Hill on the same day 444 kms north east. The accelerator must have been flat to the floor in the Rolls that day. :D

I wouldn't normally show this as Terry has shown a similar one already but this one has a rubber cachet added 'Carried On HMAS Geelong'.

There is a story that Colleen Woolley & Stampboarder Noel 'The Nighwatchman' Almeida tell. Australia Post had arranged for an unknown number of covers with this cachet to be carried as 'Ship Mail' by RAN patrol boat HMAS Geelong. However due to unforeseen circumstances (bad weather???) the trip was cancelled but some of these were released. Colleen prices these at $150.
