The "Should I Buy It?" Thread

Post by mstary1 »

I don't know if a thread exists already but here goes.

How about members who a thinking of bidding or buying an item post a scan here?

That way you can get good advice if it is good value, valuable or a rip off?

post the item your thinking of getting and the wide range of experts here can give there opinion.
No need to link to it if you want to keep it to yourself.

The T.P.N.G.cover

It is a philatelic cover, but it is an easy augury to say more than 50 AUD will be the price.

That's an interesting one - Paquebot usage, New Hebrides postmark indicating route taken, gutter pair, etc. Clearly philatelic, but not a bad buy at that price IMHO.

Out of interest, is it fully described? The reason I ask, is that many ebay bargains are misdescribed, and hence overlooked by many buyers.

General point on this thread - I appreciate that nobody wants to give away what they're bidding on, but a summary of the item description would add interest here.

The back of the cover says 3d Air Booklet Stamps but I can't see the green dots in the margin. Does the rust make this cover more of a liability than it is worth? Maybe I can soak it in Oxyclean for a day to clean it up :) I've asked for close up scans but I haven't seen them yet. It is currently AU$8 shipped with a long time to go.

Mate, the 3d are not the booklet stamps. The air mail label is not out of the booklet.

If I see a 3d airmail stamp, I always look at the airmail label first. The booklet contained beside of the 3d stamps a characteristic label. It is a light blue, nomal labels were dark blue. Booklet stamps and booklet air labels are nomally used together.

If I see a bright blue label, I check the stamp. Dark blue labels never have booklet stamps on the cover.

I have scanned you an example with a booklet air label and a booklet stamp. You will see the difference.

Rolin, I can't put my finger on it but there is just SOMETHING about that cover that troubles me.

What would have cost 1 pound to post, in an ENVELOPE, in 1949? I am a little worried about the envelope itself too, it LOOKS like the Air Mail sticker is actually printed onto the envelope. Were such envelopes available in 1949?

Added after more thought: The envelope is not Registered either, even more suspicious in my opinion. if it is not an outright fake then I believe it is philatelic and cannot be considered commercial use of a scarce stamp.

PeterS, It took that much analysis to conclude the L1 cover was philatelic? It is obviously contrived but probably is real (not fake or forged).

1,60 for a philatelic cover with no receiver. I would not have bought it, but I don't collect antarctic or ship covers and so it is not my personal preference. The trees on covers otherwise always are nice, so the price is OK.

The google tool is funny. Tried it and funny things came out.

Glen- this is where the supply and demand steps in- (and call me a bunny if you wish)- but in the UK, I've not seen this postcard before and would have happily paid $25 for it- because I like it, it fits in with my collection and adds something other than a catalogue value.

Though if you have any for "way under" $25 I'll take two!

That does not appear to be a CTO stamp, wrong cancel. Appears to be postally used with a 1932 cancel.

What is the sellers description?

There really isn't one. About all you get is
FINE USED £190
The scan above and a listing of postage rates.

Are you saying a postally used cancel would take away from the value or that it should not be listed as CTO?

Postally used (scarce) is worth at least double a CTO (more common). IF the cancel is genuine and it isn't thinned at top left then it is worth in the order of A$500.

The CTO cancels are always much thinner and fainter than the cancel on this stamp, even though it is a Melbourne cancel (as all CTO cancellations were). I will post up some examples CTO cancels on 5/- Bridges tonight after work, unless somebody else sees this thread and has some examples to hand.

There is something about that cancel but I may just be seeing things. Glen is the expert on cancels.
