I looked at this website and could not find any auctions, at least for collectibles.
Are all the listings fixed-price?

Less commentary this time, just the facts.

The number in brackets is the number of active stamp auctions (and
perhaps store listings) under way at each website on May 29, 2008.
Please notify me of any errors or miscalculations.

I marked the sites with more than 10,000 auctions in RED.

I need a volunteer or two-----

Post by doug2222usa »

On my list of worldwide online auctions, I have a few websites with [??]
regarding the number of stamp auctions under way. This is because it was
too time-consuming or too complicated to figure out what was going on.

It would be greatly appreciated if a couple of folks would look at any auction
with an "unknown" number of auctions, figure it out if possible, and report
back (here) with a reply post. Especially wanted, www.hood.de

Any "store" listings should be included in the total, whether auction items or
"buy-it-now" items.

Thanks to anyone who dons the checkered deerstalker! We all know the
chap who wore one, right? Umm, right?

Whoa! That number is twice as large as I found just a few days
ago. I will look at that right now.

I must have overlooked a category at QXL.

I finally figured out how to summarize the number of stamp auctions
at www.hood.de and the total is well over 20,000 -- making this a
major stamp auction website.

Also discovered summary data at several other very small auctions,
now included. And one new website this week, but it's really a
laughingstock (see why).

Online Stamp Auctions: NEW Format, NEW Data. Update #22

Post by doug2222usa »

Numbers represent the total stamp auctions (and in some cases,
store listings) under way at each website on July 1, 2008. I am now
awaiting clarification from Delcampe.com on their total.

I will post new totals every three months so you can determine
whether an auction is growing or declining
-- please notify me of
any errors or miscalculations.

To compare July 1 numbers with those of six weeks ago, see my post
of June 19, above. There are some significant changes!

Thanks for your input, and it's an interesting website, but I am only including
ebay-type enterprises where the owner lists and manages his own auctions.

There is something valuable on the website you furnished. Scroll down a
few paragraphs, and you will see a fine example of Scandinavian MANIA for
exceptional cancellations, a copy of Scott #215 with a perfect cancel,
at a heavenly price.

The lesson is, when you see these older stamps in junk boxes or counter
stock (with fabulous cancels, I mean), BUY them.

Image

Priced at approximately 9 to 10 times Facit catalog value, give or take.

You're right - some people are paying totally weird amounts for stamps with superb cancellations.

(Is this a specially scandinavian phenomenon? :D )

Of course I'm willing to pay extra for a stamp with superb cancellation - but even gold may be to expensive to buy.................

Doug - thats a hell of a lot of research you've done there - I know how hard it is to keep a live list like that up to date - well done and keep up the good work. This has answered one question I had as to where to go looking for stamps if I am to totaly boycott ebay! YAY

for Amy,

Post by doug2222usa »

Yes, that list is all about choices. On the other hand, some of those
auctions are so miserably screwed-up that you'll whimper to yourself,
"Self, oh why did I ever stray away from e....bay?"

Well I have only tried (and failed) to sell things twice and that was here on stampboards. As a buyer it might not be a BAD thing to have less competition

New auction site:

Post by doug2222usa »

Just found today:
www.worldphilatelicauctions.com = India

Will be added to the master-list next time I update. As far as I can tell,
this is an ebay-type auction.

Since there are no stamp listings yet, this is a good time to offer some advice
where other auctions go wrong. I can't tell what your categories are going to
be, but until you average 500 stamp listings at any one time, you should cut
the number of categories WAY down; 10 would be plenty. One of the most
frustrating things for a collector (of anything) is to laboriously check 100s
of sub-categories for listings (and not find any).

Also, I hope you will find a way to discourage listings with a net value of less
than $1. Some of the "free" auctions on my master-list have a TON of rubbish,
individual stamps worth 5c to 10c each AT MOST, and the profits come from
overcharging for postage. This, of course, ruins your reputation, and worse,
the serious collector never comes back.

Having said all this, I realize that you have not set yourself up as a "stamp"
auction, particularly, but these tips will apply across the board in many cases.

We all realize it is extremely difficult to get any traction in the highly competitive
online auction business. Frankly, it is beyond my understanding why anyone
would start a new one, but nevertheless we wish you well.

I hope you will visit ALL the 60+ auctions on the list; you will find a lot of good
ideas, but even more bad ideas.

Now I hope my fellow SB members will add a few words from the OZ perspective.
Keep in mind that here, at least, the cost of postage is working against you,
even though stamps are among the cheapest items to ship overseas.

We do not have to many sub categories. Only 1 :D right now and we will add more as needed. This is not a put up a website and hope everything goes well venture. We plan to lose money for at least 2 years :? . Probably beyond that. I am in it for the challenge. If you are wondering why anyone would start an auction, the fact is if no one did it driven to a goal, then the big monopoly has already won. Auctioneers should just hand one third of their profits over to the monopoly for life. I for one, do not believe this to be the only course of action for auctioneers. They can join sites like our and others to defray the cost. Real competition will lower prices. Sooner or later one will come along and knock over the big auction. It might not be us, but future congrats to whoever does. Nothing is forever.

True enough. Your scenario, for instance, is the story of Delcampe, which
came out of nowhere a few years ago, and is now MUCH larger than ebay
in several major categories of collectibles. We admire your optimism.

I think, however, that no one should consider ebay a monopoly. Entry into the
online (auction) marketplace is open to everyone. It is true that they dominate
the auction business, but that's different. They dominate because they did a
lot of things right, they were the first in many innovations, and they had deep
pockets. Now they have inexplicably run off "into the ditch," and by a series of
mistakes and insults, have earned the contempt of many former supporters.

Present management seems very much out of tune with what the customer
base wants, so the entry of new firms (like yourself) would seem to have
a greater chance of success. By the way, do you collect stamps?

On-Line Auction with lots of stamps

Post by halmpje »

:D

In the Netherlands, you will find plenty of on-line auction sites.

We have; www.marktplaats.nl (it's an ebay site, free of charge) and www.qoop.nl.

At this moment 05/08/2008 qoop.nl has more then 350,000 stamps items for sale
I collect Australian Stamps for more than 25 years. In the Netherlands, they would say I am a specilaist, but I still have questions. I hope with joining this boards to find some answers.

Thanks for your input and welcome to StampBoards.

I think I had www.qoop.nl at one time and dropped it because it did not
offer English translations. A couple of decent sites in Hungary and Croatia
were dropped for the same reason.

The ebay affiliate marktplaats was discussed just last week.

Please take a quick look at marktplaats and confirm that there's no English
language version. I may go back and add half a dozen I had previously
dropped; next update around October 1.

Non-English Online Auctions

Post by doug2222usa »

It's a problem for the 99% of our SB members who don't speak Dutch,
as a precise knowledge of the description of the stamps is critical to bidding.

But I have not decided yet whether to go back and reincorporate the half
dozen or so non-English sites, next time I update. My inclination is that,
yes, I will, since it only takes a few extra lines and harms no one.

Two most popular auction site in philately in Finland:

http://systeemi.net/
http://www.huuto.net/fi/

You can sell all things in "huuto.net" not only philately meterial. But "systeemi.net" is focused on philately. Unfortunately both sites are in only Finnish.

yes, our site is very user friendly, you control everything from the members area as well as add your own google gadjets. We have Std, dutch and reverse auctions to give you a better choice and you can edit, change, remove auctions as you feel you need to. One bids are placed on your auctions, you are limited as to what you can change like most sites. We also have some neat features as well like "My Folders" which allows you to store your auctions by category for bulk relisting later on. We also try to change anything to our customers likings to give a more pleasant experience.

We have so many features, I recommend to join and browse thru the site and members area, any questions you have you can email us at support@modlow-arvai.com. also in the members area, check out the referrals and commissions you can earn on final value fees from people you refer.

Anyone who joins from this forum as a seller, Please email me at the above email with your user name after registration and i will give you a $300.00 credit to either get you started.

Online Stamp Auctions - Update #23 - October 1, 2008

Post by doug2222usa »

Online Stamp Auctions - Update #23

I have compiled the number of active stamp auctions (and perhaps store listings) under way at each online auction as of the first day of the months shown. Please notify me of any errors or miscalculations.

Now that I track the number of listings every 3 months, I have restored all the abominable, dreadful, and pitiful websites to this list, as well as several absolutely incomprehensible foreign-language websites, because I want to be fair to everyone...

I regret to announce that www.alneum.com and www.millionairesbay.com have gone out of business. Message archives currently show that www.mastamps.com has been suspended.

Hi Doug

I recently got turffed off Trademe after 5 odd years of transacting through it - simply because I'm not currently physically in the country (NZ). That's inspite of the fact that I'm a New Zealand citizen, with a permament domicile residence in NZ and pay annual tax there...apparently I don't qualify as 'located' there; and I had well in excess of 300 +ve feedbacks (never a negative).

Apparently my account was closed to protect the other Trademe buyers and sellers - bollocks!

Well - that sent me on a hunt for an alternative website for NZ and I located "Zillion" - what appears to be a great ('cute') copy of Trademe - and a flaming good one. Only just going but clearly from the hits it will develop and will get the custom...and the fees are cheaper...and I don't have to be located in NZ.

Here's the link:

http://www.zillion.co.nz/

Cheers - Matt

The update will be coming January 1, along with new tallies of the
numbers of auctions, so we can see if each site is growing or declining.

If you know of any not on the list, especially in Europe (where there
should be dozens), kindly make them known to me.

The mastamps.com website is missing its navigation bar at the bottom,
making 25% of the website invisible, at least with my FireFox 3.

This is a different issue than the suspension, which was (is?) in effect
at the time of the last update.

that's weird, i tried firefox which is the latest upgrade and it loaded fine but it did take about 1 mintue to load as when it first came up, the text was overlapping one another but after it loaded completely it was fine.

Internet explorer 7.0 loads it faster and clean but this mastamps.com is a redirect as it took me to modlow-arvai.com so maybe you are better offer listing the main site and not the redirect which could be the issue. not really sure as both load ok on my pc.

Online Stamp Auctions - Update #24 - January 1, 2009

I have compiled the number of active stamp auctions (and perhaps store listings) under way at each online auction as of the first day of the months shown. Please notify me of any errors or miscalculations.

I regret to announce that http://www.auctionaddict.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; has apparently gone out of business.

We need a German-speaking volunteer to go into http://www.hood.de" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and try to figure out how many stamp auctions are currently running. Likewise, the Finnish site http://huuto.net/fi/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; -- both of these websites are incomprehensible.
