You could post a free notice in eBay's "Want It Now;"
specify more information rather than less.

Re: Online Stamp Auctions other than eBay

Post by tommdavies »

I have only just caught up with this very interesting thread. I have looked at some of the auction sites more obviously related to my needs, but can't seem to find the right one.

I have a collection of UK used stamps from penny black up to George V. Many of them are variants in plates and colour (partic. GV). They are on good condition. I want to sell some of the duplicates. They are often valued highly in Gibbons, but that doesn't mean a lot I guess.

I am daunted by the fees for evaluation on some sites.

Any helpful clarifications as to which site to use?

Thanks

Tom

In eBay-type auctions, the type we are tracking, there
shouldn't be ANY evaluation fees or anything other than
listing fees, which are generally nominal.

Suggest you try one or two "test" lots, starting with a
minimum bid you would find acceptable, well-illustrated
material, with catalog notations highlighting your variety.

Or try the items here on StampBoards first, at a fixed
price -- no fees at all, and plenty of opportunity for any
and all potential buyers to discuss.

Thankyou for your advice. I thought the groundrules didn't allow selling as such? I am happy to try some stamps out though as you suggest.

Tommdavies, selling is ENCOURAGED here!! I have had
great success with U.S. and Commonwealth lots, although
I've been lazy recently.

Just post your varieties one at a time, with a good 300
or 400dpi image, or higher if needed to demonstrate some
tiny detail, state the price and postage, and plunge in.
A majority of buyers pay by PayPal (or account transfer in
Australia, I believe). Read the Instructions.

Study other sellers' ads for format and wording. Glen is
one of our biggest advertisers, he must have connections.

Here's one of my old ads, still available:
http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=17233

And use good stamps on your little envelope or parcel.

Wow!

So let me get this. I start a new topic? I post a pic of the stamp/s with SG number, description etc......and seek to sell them.

What if I have no idea what the price should be? There seem to be so many variables; colour, condition, hinges, staining, fading etc. Can I ask for offers?

In any case, I would appreciate comments on the below as an example. (Sorry they are not individual pics.........)

I'll let Glen and the Mods answer those questions; I think
most of them are snoring right now.

One stamp per image, for best results. You can't ask for
offers. The new topic goes under the "Sell" category, not
in this category:
http://www.stampboards.com/viewforum.php?f=27

For these stamps, you might take the time to find out
where cancels "492" and "163" are located; since all are
heavily-cancelled, you would not expect a high % of SG,
who overprices Victorian issues anyway. One stamp or
group of stamps per ad, by the way; we want it to sell
intact as a unit, so that a buyer can look at the ad and
post "Sold to ..." for the entire contents.

If you have no idea what the selling price should be,
look on eBay for the sales of similar items, or dealers'
price-lists, or SB members' sales. I don't know beans
about Australian varieties, but when I have them, I
bravely price them anyway; sometimes they sell and
sometimes they don't.

There is a tutorial on selling, and members' existing
ads offer a good selection of promotional wording.

Looking at the cancellation numbers; 492 in oval is Maidenhead; 163 in square is "Columba Steamer", which is unlikely, would be rare, or Limber Lincolnshire, also rare.....but it isn't in an oval; 131 in square is Edinburgh.

As Doug said, you cannot ask for offers. However you could go to the "You ask questions..." sub-forum, and enquire as to what people think that these stamps are worth, or can be sold at. Then you could list them at whatever price seems to be fair. Many Boarders, including Glen (the owner of the site) have done this, and then subsequently sold the item on this Board, or posted it on eBay, or other auction sites with nice results.

But sometimes you may not like the answers. Some of the people on this Board can be quite "vigorous" in their responses, and might quite possibly tell you that they belong in the bin.

(I am not saying this about your scan - I have not got a clue as to what to ask for your item)

Hi,
I was going thru this list for the first time and I believe that this is a very good work done indeed! However did not find this site in the list, I have bought several stamps from this site.

https://www.allcollection.net

In Spanish, the same site is called
http://www.todocoleccion.net

Have a look please.

A very fine website that will be added to our
list, which badly needs updating. First big blizzard,
I'll get to it, promise. Thanks very much!

I could not get the English version to load, but
the Spanish site (which I can muddle through)
popped right up.

This thread was intended (by me, the founder) to list worldwide auctions where the Seller is in charge of his own lots, i.e., eBay, Delcampe, bidStart, etc.

I have not updated the "list" of around sixty auctions in a long time. The previous post, for Principality Auctions, really does not belong here either.

However, it is not my decision whether you can promote yourself here; let the Mods (or Glen) advise you.

Doug, I love the list you have made and look at it time to time.

I would recommend you to make a "Auction house" list in another stickie to avoid confusion and let the moderater powers be bestowed opon you, so that the first posting in this topic got the entre list, all the time, updated when you have the time!.

Hi Doug,
I still fancy the stamp on your Avatar! Been some time since I was active here. There doesn't seem to be any updates on new auction places, I am still searching for auction houses listing US covers. My requirements have whittled down to a few US Airmail stamps on covers most of them are for South American destination rates so any South AMerican auction house with listings in English will be a great help.

Barry please acquaint yourself with the shift key and place capital letters where appropriate. Text type is a no no on this board. Spell checking is essential as well, in Australia we conform to the Australian standards ie: centre not center etc.

I recently tidied up one of your posts on the KGV ask a question thread and I think you will agree it looks much better.

Doug,

Haven't used them, but I don't see them on your list. Are you familiar with BidStart? http://www.bidstart.com. From their info, I believe they meet your criteria.

About Us
Summary

bidStart is an online marketplace and community connecting buyers and sellers of collectibles; including stamps, coins, comics, sports cards and more; offering auction & store items. bidStart stands out in the industry by offering unrivaled customer service with a personal touch and low selling fees.
History

Founded in March of 2005, bidStart was originally known as StampWants, and focused exclusively on collectible stamps. Within just a few years, StampWants had become a leader among collectible stamp marketplaces through quality features and support, aggressive advertising and unprecedented promotions; including the giveaway of a C3a Inverted Jenny in 2008 - the most sought after United States stamp, worth over $175,000 at the time.

During the summer of 2009, StampWants re-launched an entirely new website based upon the comments, suggestions and feedback we received since our launch in 2005. The new website was an immediate success, and sales quickly began to increase.

In November of 2009 StampWants re-branded itself as bidStart - the Collectible Marketplace. The core values and principles remain the same, but with the desire to provide the best platform and marketplace to not only philatelists, but collectors of all types of collectibles.
Features

bidStart offers sellers of collectibles the option to sell their items in auction, fixed price, and store inventory formats. All the features these sellers would expect from an online auction site, and more, are available to them, including gallery images, image hosting, best offers, reserve prices and listing upgrades. By implementing low insertion fees, bidStart has been able to maintain a high quality of items listed online, while at the same time allowing sellers to list their entire inventories.
Goals & Mission Statement

For the collector, bidStart offers a wide and extensive inventory of collectibles for purchase, along with free tools and services such as want list management software, community forums, promotions and giveaways.

By focusing exclusively on collectibles, and understanding the collector, bidStart is able to offer collectors a home and sense of community which is lost on most other auction websites. By working together with our members, we believe we can build a better, stronger, community and marketplace for all.
I collect Souvenir Sheets postally used on cover, WW used/mint stamps up to 1957. Specialize/collect all years of BRAZIL. - APS Member 222105

From Indonesia:

removing the /mainpage.aspx will give you the indonesian version

As the name suggests, the site started dealing with money and numismatics, but it deals with stamps too...
Can't comment on friendliness to foreign (or even domestic) buyers yet although i am indonesian

In the list you are compiling you have:

www.stampwants.com

That is valid of course but the link actually takes you to their new name which is bidstart.com.
I use it as my primary buy/sell site since it is so much cheaper than Ebay. It allows stores as well as auctions and currently has about 2.5 millions listings on stamps.

Re: Online Stamp Auctions other than eBay

Post by epicure »

Hi,

I am currently leaving delcampe because their new fees.
I will probably put some of my stamps on ebay (where I am selling books and other stuff since some time), but also on mascoo (french site) : http://www.mascoo.com/en/?lg=en

and also on catawiki : http://www.catawiki.com/

Catawiki started a few years ago as a catalog, but is now also more and more used in Western Europe for selling and buying items.
Do you know this place?

I like ebid as well. Have bought a lot of stamps through there, seems to have a wide variety in both Australian and Commonwealth issues.

There is plenty of other things but as I only really collect Australian and Commonwealth cannot comment on the other items.

I still think Ebay is the best place for a collector to sell their stamps solely because Ebay attracts huge traffic from around the world.

The let-down is the fees that a seller has to pay particularly final value fees which I found to be a bit overwhelmed. Because of this fee, the seller may gain a small profit from their selling.

Delcampe is good because of the free service (unless you want to pay for premium service), but I still have doubt about how much traffic would I get If I subscribed to premium. Delcampe is well-known only to stamps & antiques collector not to the public. But If you ask a stranger about Ebay, they will still have an idea about what it is even they are not collectors.

Eventually, it is all about marketing. Now I started selling on Bidstart but still not up to my expectation.

Cheers,
Adi

Anyone know if there's an online auction that's strong on Latin America?

I use all the usual suspects, eBay, Delcampe etc, but wondered whether there was an auction that had a particular focus on this part of the world...

Newbie here, but I've worked as staff in online forums for years...
I think it would be much easier for the mod and for people coming into this thread newly to simply edit the very first post with the updates that come from the pages of replies, so that when someone comes in new, they don't have to look through all the pages to find the most recent updated list, it would always be at the top in the first post.

Good idea? Bad idea? :)

Anything that involves unpaid volunteer moderators in more work is a bad thing. You have to make time to be involved.
