Hi, everyone.

I looked through this topic and noticed that Japanese Yahoo auction was not mentioned.
http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/
Actually, it is a good place to search for some rare stuff.
They have plenty of Japanese stamps but also a lot of others.
I collect Soviet stamps and once in a while I find good deals.
It is easier to browse categories by regions.
http://zenmarket.jp/yahoo.aspx?c=20960
For example, here is European category http://zenmarket.jp/yahoo.aspx?c=44180

P.S. In my personal experience Japanese Yahoo auction is safer than Ebay, but still don't forget to check sellers ranking to avoid frauds.

Hi

I think you should read your welcome email and introduce yourself in the appropriate newcomers thread - that should be your first post here.

As for your Japanese auction, they seem to be as bad as anywhere, though I am sure there are some good bargains to be had. This GB stamp is not one of them. And see what happens when you try to calculate the shipping - all those extras! The price for that piece of junk starts at US$10, and it seems the buyer pays the auction listing fee (US$2.60), Bank fees ($1.50), shipping US$12) - $26 for something that is worthless. Dreamers rule

I had a look around and was interested in seeing what was available and found one or two items of considerable interest. Unfortunately, the site is translated from the Japanese by Google, so the information given is just unreadable. This is what I got when looking at a very nice Karl Lewis cover:

Bad forgery at Status International for a reserve start price of 15.600 USD here:
https://www.statusint.com/search.php?search_text=2036

The lot description is complete crazy, I skip further comments on this fraud:
1970-71 Mao Zedong & Marshal Lin Biao 8f, prepared but unissued, with all stock being officially ordered destroyed. (Lin Biao was Mao's deputy & nominated successor, but there was some internal party power struggle, & he died in a mysterious plane crash in Mongolia in Sep 1971, while fleeing from China). Superb fresh MUH. Yang illustrated after W85 but unpriced. Excellent quality printing & we think it is genuine, but obviously we have nothing to compare it with for verification. Therefore, it is sold strictly "as is" with no returns being possible, so personal inspection of this great PRC rarity is recommended. (P)
Image

The forgery is very easy to recognize because of the wrong color, different print quality and the different characters position + shapes at bottom lines. Just a quick look into a catalog would be enough but it seem this auction does not have any stamp catalog ...

Hi again,

Have another question,,, yes again :)

When searching through the stamps here, i ofcourse noticed the quite alot of sheets of stamps beeing here.

Now i put several on auction to see if there might be any value in the ones laying here.

Question is, would you please take a look, and see if there is anything worth while, dont want to end up
giving everything away because of my lack of knowledge and experience..

Thanks in advance.

http://veiling.catawiki.nl/kavels/2342379-wereld-partij-van-83-vellen-diverse-landen

83 Random Sheets, most of them are Vietnam, some probably Bogus....?

Value, unknown yet :).

If needed i can post some pictures of the ones maybe interesting, not all though, just might be a bit to much.

Regards

Remco

Today I have come back to my original project, and over the next month, will update the list of eBay-type auction websites.

I read all 300+ posts, and made 22 pages of notes.

The next step will be to visit the 75 or 80 auction websites, see if they qualify, then try to determine the number of members, the number of auctions, and the number of fixed-price sales.

I will eventually get this figured out. With the unfavorable trends at eBay, it is more important than ever to have reliable, realistic alternatives.

Sounds like it will be a very welcome resource Doug - well done!

Are you going to gather any other data? I'm thinking specifically of whether the site is a generalist stamp auction or whether it has a particular focus on a country or region?

Since I don't expect to have more than 70 or 80 auctions when I'm finished with the update, I will add features one by one. None of the prior versions of the list has had a designated specialist focus, but we'll see.

The timetable calls for first separating the active sites and the dead sites, then segregating out those with less than (say) 300 stamp listings, then noting which ones are truly pathetic, then adding "C" and "PC" to indicate Coins and Postcards respectively.

More features as I think of them, but the ideal is to provide everything in one line, for easy comparison. I may go to a smaller font if necessary. The last update was several years ago, and I get the impression that more have failed and disappeared than have been added.

While there's plenty of $oftware package$ out there, there's surely no enterprise harder to get off the ground than an online eBay-type stamp auction, with a million things to think of, and a million complaints. Ask Gibbons.

The update is DONE, much quicker than I had anticipated. One or two loose ends to tidy up, but let's get the results out there in the public eye.

I would repeat the surprising fact that so MANY of the struggling websites from 2008-2010 have now disappeared altogether, and relatively few new ones to take their place. Some websites still maintain strict secrecy over their "stats," to their detriment, I believe.

I need to research the two "portals" quite a bit, but that's coming. In particular, the South American "MercadoLibre" represents a LOT of auctions in multiple countries.

There are two categories shown below, "active" and "unavailable," and some of the actives are downright pitiful, although out of fairness, I have included them. When your entire auction website has less than 100 lots, why not just hang it up, move to California, and volunteer to fight forest fires? Seems easier. The biggest surprise? The huge French website, http://www.mascoo.com --

Comments and corrections welcomed, and after a little format tweaking and guidance from the Mods, I will try to update this info once per quarter. Forum software has pinched the data into a fairly narrow column, any fix for that?

Anywhere you see question marks, feel free to contribute.

Here is the final update of online auctions for the time being, with a few more changes. I will omit the list of "unavailable" websites, as you can always go back to my post of September 14 and see them.

Where you see "??" I need information, so post that data for the next update around the first of the year. New sites are also welcomed.

Three (stamp=??) unknowns are included in the "active" list, as they are quite large, Hood, Marketplaats, and Gibbons, and do not deserve to be grouped with the sub-100's.

Here is the start of a long list of countries under the "Stamp" category; it's hard to say what this really means. I assumed it was the total. It doesn't matter much whether they have a million or 18 million, as that gives the buyer ample choice. Still, I wish it was accurate and transparent.

See all items from these subcategories 1009648 New auctions (never restarted)
Africa ... 57485 New auctions (never restarted)
Algeria (1962-...) 883 New auctions (never restarted)
Angola 310 New auctions (never restarted)
Ascension 636 New auctions (never restarted)
Benin - Dahomey

Once again, this list is for eBay-type auctions only, not commercial firms who take consignments, publish catalogs, and hold floor auctions.

As I have said and/or implied before, I wonder how much business Sebastien loses due to this confusion??

Here is a chance to be the hero, Gugusg. Tell me in simple words, once and for all, the DIFFERENCE between delcampe.com and delcampe.net, and I will try desperately to keep them straight.

It is a good thing  I am not in charge, even for 10 seconds, because in that tiny interval, one or the other would be nothing but a swarm of electrons headed pell-mell toward Pluto, the wanna-be planet...

Hello,

Easy :D

Delcampe.com > for US
Delcampe.fr > for france
Delcampe.de > for german
etc ..

Delcampe.net is the international website.

When you are selling an item, you can choose to sell it on your local website (.com, .fr, .de, etc) and/or selling it on international website (.net)

So in delcampe.net you can see almost all items, and in local website you can only see items "local".

For exemple you will never see an item on the ".com" sold in the ".fr" website, but on ".net" you can see items sold in ".com" and ".fr"

I agree, all of this is really weird and bring confusion, but it was mainly designed I think to allow to the sellers a simple way to sell only to "local" buyers :D

Hello Doug.

Thanks for updating the list. I think it is great job you are doing. :-)

I have few danish auctions that are not on the list. They have restrictions on country of residence when you register. I do not know if that has any implications as to if they qualify to be on the list:

http://www.yah.dk directory link to stamps http://www.yah.dk/catalog.asp?catid=919&n=Frimrker country options when registering - Denmark, England, Norway, Sweden.

http://www.dansknetauktion.dk directory link to stamps http://www.dansknetauktion.dk/categories.php?category=frimrker&parent_id=1866 country options when registering - Belgien, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Germany, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom, Italien.

Also in Denmark the national stamp Association have an auction site that everyone can buy from but you have to be a member to sell from this site. I don't know if this stamp auction qualifies for the list.

The adress is http://www.dff-netsalg.dk

In Czech republic, we have http://www.aukro.cz. I don´t use it as the chance to find some Indian state revenues which I don´t have is nearly to zero.

Thank you - it looks suitable, but not knowing a word of Czech, it won't have stats unless you supply them - hold off on that task until around January, when I will put together a quarterly update of all info received during the next 3 months.

OK, this is general auction portal in Czech republic. The direct link to stamps is (in Czech filatelie - známky):

http://aukro.cz/filatelie-8480?ref=simplified-category-tree

About 60,000 listings now.

In the past few days, I have revisited many of the auctions I posted in the update, looking for excuses NOT to use them. I found plenty.

First of all, as I continue to buy from two sellers on bidStart, my opinion of the Gibbons effort has improved. I am still campaigning for a feature to be added, using cookies that are likely already in place.

The way I search, results in many similar lots, and there may be 25 to 50 results. I would like to see each Search result (before I click) show a tiny pop-up that reads "Viewed 9/22" or something similar, and a couple days later, an additional "Viewed 9/25" and so forth. The pop-up, of course, disappears when the item is sold. This is one of the VERY FEW pop-ups I think would be useful. If I haven't bought the item in 3 "looks," I'm not likely to buy it, ever. The pop-up is not essential, simply a time-saver.

Ebay, unfortunately, has a maddening mess of pop-ups, including a ridiculous Super Nanny who, mirabile dictu, announces you have been Outbid (hoodah thunkit?), and another dustbin-load* that begs you to gush over Churchill, Manitoba "stuff" as well as Churchill stamps.

Whoever designed this abomination is an absolute MORON, and that's being charitable.

Finally, my opinion of some of the U.S. auctions has plunged, when I see how clumsy and complicated they are, what rubbish they're pushing, and how the software was designed by drunken lumberjacks.

No names, so I don't get sued for badmouthing them.

More later.

*which COVERS UP what you're trying to read or bid on...

For my own purposes, which are quite different from you serious collectors' desire to complete and upgrade, I like Stamps2Go.

But that's because I have 25,000 items under $2 to sell, although consolidation will reduce the number (of lots) substantially. I have about 50-60 lots on eBay right now, the most in 4 years, but they are not moving very well.

Ebay gave me 500 free listings (which expire in 2 weeks) so that's a good excuse to go wild, ~$150 otherwise lost. I plan to do another 50 tonight.

Visit sites for yourself, that's why I tabulated them carefully and made them easy (I hope) to compare. I think your best collective bet is to view those huge West European auctions, like Marktplaats and Ricardo, where there may not be so much competition on better Australasia, and Mascoo for other Commonwealth material.

Here is the first major mistake from the list posted some weeks ago.

http://www.qxl.dk

In Denmark, in Danish language | Stamp=424 | Coin=7335

Due to a mis-spelled word in my Search, I overlooked a TON of listings, and poor http://www.qxl.dk takes the rap and catches the flak.

They have over 37,000 listings, not 424 or so.

I'll fix that in the year-end update, two months from now. Also, at that time, for the sake of simplification, I will omit the auctions that disappeared in the last two years, and the ones with fewer than 100 stamp listings. I will visit each website as part of this process.

Thank you for the list. One small error. For eBid you have given the US eBid site. The main site is on ebid.net. On the opening page of the main site you can select your country and will see those sellers who are prepared to ship to your country. On us.ebid.net you will only see sellers who ship to the USA. eBid can be a useful site to buy or sell on.

Thanks - that will be fixed next time around, and Delcampe has a similar arrangement.

I just signed up with eBid, but haven't listed anything yet. It seems to be an ideal venue for items worth $1 to $10, but of course the proof is in the selling, not the listing.

The Swedish Philately Ass. run their own auction and fixed price site.
samlamera.sff.nu
There are no fees for buyers and anyone is welcome. Sellers need to be members of the Association. It is 350 kr per year and you get 8 good magazines a year. Apart from thar there are no fees for sold or unsold items.
Tradera.se is asubsidiary of e-bay and they have been known to upset collectors by changing fees and conditions many times. Unsold fee went from 0,5kr to 1 to 3 to 9 and back to 3 kr.

Samlamera lists about 46000-47000 stamps and abt 3000 pcs at the moment and it is growing all the time. Meanwhile tradera is going the other way.

Hi Doug
Looking at the list, you don't seem to be listing Bidstart as a separate entity to Stanley Gibbons. At this stage, Bidstart is still going strong despite the eventual intention of Gibbons to close it.

There are still a lot of Bidstart sellers who haven't taken the opportunity to cross over to the new site, mainly because it started out as such a mess so at this stage, SG are running two separate entities.
Where do the years go? I went from philandering to philately and didn't even notice.

Regarding ebid:

wondering how the experiences are, I tried to visualize the total of listings of some sellers, of which "More from this Seller" was displayed below an item (say with 5 items), when I clicked to see "all" I got only two results.

Otherwise a site, one might list 1000s of items for almost nothing - and drive buyers there..

philasearch mirrors the most important European auction houses, some are not only mirrored but also hosted. They have a system to creat an auction including the print catalog.

Philasearch is able to run an on-line or a life auction for any stamp auction house. They have begun to work together with houses that auction coins and antiques also.

It's one of the most powerful platforms in the world.

Hello,

I organize auctions for www.catawiki.com, an online auction house. Any collector can offer up stamps or collections for sale on this site, but auctioneers will screen these offered lots first before accepting these in an auction. The auctioneers compile and publish auction every friday noon, and the auctions will terminate at a given weekday from 20hrs CET onwards. Auctioneers weed out the unsuitable stuff and check for forgeries and lesser quality items. Any lot must potentially fetch over 75 € at auction as well.
A customer service desk will assist any seller with queries or will intervene when thingsq go wrong after the sale.

Does this site qualify for your list?

Greets,

Matthew

Great list :D . It is very helpful. I am using ebay now, but I have always wondered what website is best for stamps including both buyers and sellers.

What do you suggest as a buyer?
